Description I read is a “reliable receiver” out of the backfield, so with that in mind not Jordan Howard.
I guess it varies depending on the “expert”. The one I read said he’s a capable receiver but not great.
Definitely more elusive. Definitely not as big of a downhill runner. They got a guy who's more versatile, and wants to operate with a little more space than Howard. Not quite the jitterbug that Cohen is. That fits the mode of this offense, so I understand it all better, now. I haven't watched much tape on any players in this draft. After the Howard trade, I started watching some at RB. But clearly, now, I'll have to go back and watch a whole lot more of this kid.
I will say this: I watched an Iowa State game this year, and everyone knew he was getting the ball. He still picked up yards and first downs. Picking through a defense that's ready for you is an admirable ability.
NFL.com lists his main comp as none other than Kareem Hunt. I been looking into the running backs we might pick, its basically the only "Draft prep" i have done this year, with so little to really look for. Montgomery was 2nd on my list of realistic guys who could be available. Hes really good. I'd say hes honesatly closer to a thomas jones that Jordan Howard. He also ran in a very similar system to what the BEars use now, in terms of running game. Hes a true 3 down back too - not necessarily meaning hes gonna be a stud but he can do it all you cant assume what the call is just because hes out there. Greetings yall, been away from the boards, hope you're all doing OK
I’ve seen some highlights and he’s definitely much shiftier than Howard. Then again, a cable car is shiftier than Jordan Howard. Other things I’m seeing is not much in the way of raw strength/power in his combine numbers. Only 13 reps with 225 and a 28 inch vertical? Eeesh. That’s an offensive linemans jump. I generally don’t put too much stock in those numbers but they can be telling sometimes. The big knock on him across the board was his lack of speed and ability to get past the second level. Whatever... we will see. Just lost another 2019 pick for him too (for now).
Late round picks, but I think we gave up more than we should have. "The New England Patriots have traded the No. 73 overall pick and the No. 205 overall pick to the Chicago Bears for the No. 87 overall pick, No. 162 (fifth-rounder) and a 2020 fourth round pick."

Good to see you GoBearssss. I don't know shit about this kid and im not gonna pretend i do. But personally i am sick to death of Pace constantly flushing multiple picks on individual players. In rare circumstances its ok, but its not rare with Pace in fact its starting to feel pretty damn close to the norm. As a long term approach to roster building constantly spending extra picks on 1 player is absolutely idiotic. But hey! At least the boy wonder added another one of his cherished 6th round picks that are secretly the key to all draft success! Pace is like a teenager with his first credit card.
I’m not very happy with giving up more picks yet again but based on who went at the next pick Pace saw the timing was right if this was indeed the guy he coveted. Bears couldn’t sign Kareem Hunt so they drafted the guy that probably best fits that mold from this draft.
We're in boom or bust mode right now. Either we win the Super Bowl in the next year or two, or we will completely bottom out to the worst team in the league given how our GM places such little value on draft capital. We may be looking at the #1 overall pick by 2022, that is assuming Pace hasn't first traded that away. As far as the pick, isn't this another case of Pace clumsily trying to fill a hole that he himself created? Had we hung on to Howard the RB position wouldn't be any worse and we wouldn't have wasted more mid-round picks. This has been a brutally bad offseason across the board, with a weaker roster top to bottom and draft picks being discarded alarmingly. Howard runs tough. Plenty of strong finishes at the goal line, an area we struggled in for years with Forte and his annual washed up backup. Tough goal line running is something we hopefully won't be missing with Montgomery.
Gotta take issue with this statement. I’ve never seen a guy his size go down on first contact so often. He had a whopping NINE broken tackles in 250 attempts last season, good for 42nd place among NFL running backs.
For all of Forte strengths, he went down on first contact more than anyone. Howard had several strong finishing goal line runs last year, and his TD total is a reflection of that.
A few strong runs aside, his stats don’t lie. 15th in YAC and 42nd in broken tackles. He’s not a strong runner.
That's a morbid turn. One thing I will credit Pace for is restocking this team with talent. No, they may not win the superbowl, and nothing's guaranteed in this league--because worst to first can happen, as we saw last year. But worst team in the league? I can see a step back with a brutal schedule and the likelihood that perhaps the bears wont be as lucky as last year with injuries, but it will be hard to see the Giants, Raiders, Bengals, etc all bypass the bears. Don't agree with any of this at all. Like I said above, Pace is pretty solid at drafting thus far and yes--is aggressive in giving up future capital to get his guys. But most of his guys are working to the point where the results are showing. Jordan Howard had some great years here, but it was evident last year he does not fit this team going forward. We talked ad-nauseum about trading him for the last year, his shortcomings, and how teams stacked the box whenever he was on the field, hitting him well before he could go anywhere. That being said, Pace gets the benefit of the doubt here. His trade ups have worked. He certainly deserves all the criticism in the world if Montgomery is another limp-dick like Jeremy Langford. But I'm for giving Montgomery a chance--and the bears still have picks remaining AND plan to sign 18-20 undrafted guys. My guess is Montgomery isn't going to be the only weapon added to offense at RB. If Montgomery clicks, nobody is going to give a shit that the bears gave up a 4th last year. The team just got off being 1st in the division. Do picks matter in the draft? Yes. Nobody is going to pine for next year's 4th if this kid is solid. This offseason is brutal? How? The kicker situation is obviously unresolved and Pace deserves criticism rightfully so. But what other pressing needs were there? Safety? They got Clinton Dicks, who while he isn't as good as Amos--has the luxury of a damn good front 7 in front of him as opposed to his Green Bay career chasing WRs all over the damn place (and missing/getting hurdled) because Clay couldn't get to the QB anymore. For a fraction of the cost. This is the perfect offseason to not have flashy draft picks. Next year you have 2 2nds, and with 1st round contracts getting that 5th year, and teams finding that option so valuable--Pace will probably trade up back into the 1st. Also--With Callahan and Amos (possibly more) signing elsewhere and bears making minimal splashes, we get to see these comp picks again. So yeah, no 4th next year; but I'm pretty sure Amos and/or Callahan will net that 4th back. And the other another pick.
How is it weaker top to bottom? And sorry but Howard isn’t a tough runner. He’s a good back. But when there are no holes to run through...he’s going absolutely nowhere.
What makes this pick a bit more head scratching is the fact that they signed Mike Davis and Cordarelle Patterson. Did Pace forget there’s only one football in play at a time?
My "worst team in the league" concern is for 2-3 years down the line when youth and novelty have worn off and we have no draft picks to replenish the roster with cheap talent. I'm not saying it will happen, but when you go all-in like we have last offseason and this, it's either boom or bust within a couple seasons. Pace has drafted well in rounds 2-5, absolutely. His free agent signings have been superb as well. His trades? Not so much. Jury is still out on the Trubisky trade up as well as the trade up to get Floyd. Started with the loss of Fangio. We got Dix on the cheap in exchange for Amos. A low risk, high reward potential move for sure. I was never a huge fan of Amos but I'm not convinced Dix is an upgrade. Callahan to Skreen at NB is a definite downgrade but something I don't fault Pace for given that Callahan was going to cash in. Then the Howard trade for a 6th round 2020 pick. That was loss, should have gotten more or should have traded him last offseason for a 3rd or 4th as I said at the time. The Patterson signing was good we did upgrade KR/PR. Not all of this is Pace's fault. But in an offseason where we didn't have a lot to work with to start off with, I don't like chucking away more picks to move up a few spots to take a guy who doesn't seem to be a big upgrade over Howard. Don't see any upgrades on the roster outside of KR/PR. Is Pagano an upgrade over Fangio? Likely the opposite. We exchanged Howard for Montgomery essentially and at a net loss in terms of draft capital. Robbie Gould would be nice but looks like the 49ers are determined to not let that happen.
