Unreal.........a 2-year extension for $63 million. Yeah I know Wilson is paid more and Cousins is a few mil less.........they're also TEN YEARS younger and not in their twilight like Ben. They also didn't just sign their THIRD extension with their teams. I think this post from a guy at SCI sums it up nicely: "Thanks a lot Ben for getting all you could on your third extension, and right after losing two phenomenal, once in a generation talents (both because they wanted more money - great optics) and making it that much harder to stack more toys around you......or build up the other side of the ball to give you more opportunities - or negate your all too often mistakes that take points off the scoreboard". Don't look now everyone, but things are about to get much tighter cap-wise in 2020-2021. We'll have about $30 mil left in cap space after Ben's deal for 2020, with only 32 players signed. Yes we get another draft class in a few days, figure 5-6 more make the 53 and are under contract. That $30 mil will go quickly when you consider they'll have to make extension decisions next summer on Schuster, Conner, Hargrave, DuPree.
Don't offer if you dont want to pay. This one's on the front office. Let Ben play out his last year and start the Rudolph era, sink or swim. Plenty of cap money with no Ben. Really though. You play year to year and the best QB available for the Steelers is Ben. I would've hoped for a hometowm deal but what can you do.
Nah, Ben has plenty of ability to go to his agent Leigh Steinberg and say, "Hey look, I've been extended twice by this organization and they kept me around when a LOT of other teams would have traded me or let me go. I still want to make decent money about where I'm at ($25 mil or so), but I also know we're on a window here and we've just lost two great play makers over money and chemistry issues. Playing where I'm at will is still good money, and will allow the front office to help restock talent on our offense or allow them to consider a playmaker on defense that's available.............OR maybe more easily EXTEND one of four free agents that are coming due next summer.
QB salaries just keep ballooning. It always seems unreal. After the next bank busting QB contract, this will look quite reasonable. I'm glad the Steelers aren't just throwing money at journeyman QBs just to trade / cut them the following season.
I have no problem with ANY player trying to get as much as they can in the ultimate game of attrition and a career that basically GUARANTEES you future health impediments. But after the one big free agent contract or extension they get............or even a SECOND.........one would think that a player's focus at that point..............if they truly care AS MUCH or more about winning............would get the big picture and try to work within that. Derek Carr did it on his FIRST big extension and Brady has done it the BULK of his career. Ben's career earnings will eclipse $200 MILLION this year. $30+ million/year places the same cap constraints on the team as it did years ago when the cap was stagnant and top paid QBs were just beginning to see pay rates of $20-25 mil/year and the cap was $150 mil or so.........when one player is eating up 15-20% of your total cap number........its hard to keep all your own, let alone entice those 1-2 good players the team may to want to at least have the OPTION to try and sign each Spring. $5-10 million is a big difference. Its an entire draft class basically, or one very good free agent that could be had.
Ben's money is completely in line with Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan. We just disagree. I respect your opinion.
So I'm just curious. Everyone is saying the two year total, but with this year included, does the number become around 28mill or so? It seems like a 3yr deal with this year included. If that's true, then it's OK money for a QB of Ben's caliber.
There is some debate on whether it's 3yrs, 85M or 3yrs, 80M. It all hinges around the roster bonus he already earned. So it's either 27.7M per or 28.3M per. But if you evaluate the contract that way (combining new money with last year under contract) then Russell Wilson only got 31.4M per and Aaron Rodgers only got 27.6M. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I think it's too much. Let him play out 2019 and see where it goes. But that's just me.
Our beloved Ben situation could turn into the Eli Manning situation very quickly if Benny Boy isn’t putting up the same numbers he’s had over last few years. I’m in the camp of let him play out the contract and do an extension/renewal after the season if one warrants it.
I imagine that's a gamble. If Ben lights it up this year, could the Steelers lose him? He would probably stay but he might feel slighted and move on. All academic now.
I have gone back and forth on Ben staying or going. With my head I think it's best for the team if he move on and the future begins now. With my heart I want him to stay and break more NFL and Steeler records and go down in history as one of the top three NFL quarterbacks all-time and do so for his entire career in a Steeler's jersey. ART2 has proven to be extremely loyal to Benny boy so far.
Do you really think he'll put up the same numbers over the last few years without Brown/Bell? He may get more opportunities due to an improving defense (hopefully) then he has the past few years. But until Ben finally............FOR ONCE in his career........has a TD to turnover ratio like his peers at of the top in the league at his position.....like 28/6 or better......instead of just 2/1 or 3/1.............no chance that happens.
No it's not ... He may be best opportunity short term for that 7th but I don't like where it leaves us in cash flow, QB 2021 q?s... how do you evaluate Rudolph if he never gets any playing time ( a distinct possibility, if last year is any indication { I do think, hope he overtakes Josh}) No, too many negatives for me ... I wold not have a problem with playing out your contract and calling it day ... short term pain long term success with a young talented team.
Ben led the NFL in a lot of passing categories. Attempts, Completions, Yards, and Interceptions. He threw six of his interceptions in two games. Not all 16 of those were his fault. Andrew Luck was pretty damn good last season and he threw 15 interceptions. I am disappointed Ben didn't take a more team friendly deal that allowed the Steelers to add another couple players that could help the Steelers purse a Championship. Who ever said Ben isn't selfish though? He just reminded us all one more time. Colbert has been pretty active this off season. I think he believes they've got to capitalize on what's left of Ben's career. I personally think Ben might be more committed to the game than at any time in his career because he's finally being give the Superstar Franchise QB treatment.

While I agree he's the best option for the Steelers this year and possibly next year, I do think a little discount would have been in order after the massive amount of loyalty shown to him throughout his career.
