Looking forward to 2019, Browns NFL Rookie Draft

Adderly is an interesting Safety candidate as well....It's hard to say what players will inspire Dorsey to make a move up, or if he even has any intention. I think he's just being real. Ya never know how this thing is gonna fall. Never close the door on anything....

There is sure to be some talent sitting there at #49....I believe he has real interest in Dremont Jones. He's one of the first guys we discussed for that selection, and he still might be in the cross hairs. Also, like Justin Layne, wants very badly to be a Cleveland Brown.

Chiefs just got taken to the woodshed...

^^^^^ That's important because (1) the Chiefs have gotten progressively worse since Dorsey left, and (2) it helps to weaken them as potential post-season threats. Yes, they'll be very good for as long as they have Mahomes under center, but the team around him has degraded, no question, and now they will lack their top pick to improve.

Wouldn't you expect every competent GM in the league to be doing this / have this plan in place?

Well, they'd basically be doing the same thing we did, in trading #1 for a 25 year old proven veteran...I don't disagree that they haven't improved, but on this particular move, I doubt they could get a better player than Frank Clark where they are picking....It does seem expensive though. Wow.

Frank Clark is a great player, but after they traded away Dee Ford, this feels more like plugging a major hole in the roster, than actually improving.

I don't think it's as expensive as what some are assuming.

They'll give up the second they acquired in the trade for Dee Ford along with this year's first and exchange middle picks that will see them creep up the board some.

All in all, I think they upgraded the position for a price that works. Frank Clark at age 25, a known quantity in the NFL, would easily be a top 5 pick in this class, IMO.

Biggest difference I see is that we traded a #1, a #3, and a starting safety and guard for one of the best receivers in the NFL, as well as a good edge player - arguably two of our biggest areas of need. We followed that up by signing a bunch of guards (plus drafted one extremely highly in 2018) and safeties to fill the void.

Chiefs traded #1, #2, and a #3 for a guy who wasn't as good as either of the dudes they let walk (D. Ford, J. Houston) to add to a defense that lost those aforementioned guys. Still need to go a long way to shore up the leagues' worst defense and now have one less pick to do that with.

    For reference...

    2018 PFF.com grades:

    Dee Ford: 87.7 (11th)
    Myles Garrett: 87.0 (12th)
    Olivier Vernon: 86.3 (13th)

    Justin Houston: 85.7 (14th)
    Frank Clark: 77.4 (18th)

Not trying to limit the impact of losing Peppers and Zeitler will have on the team. I thought Peppers had a great season and really was starting to turn it on and Zeitler has consistently been a top-rated guard in the NFL.

That said, no one (except maybe the 2002 Buccaneers) has said "thank goodness we had that safety - or guard - to win a Super Bowl for us".

Thinking about what we gave up to get the #1 and #13 (per PFF.com) players at receiver and edge versus what Kansas City had to give up to get the #18 edge guy (again, per PFF.com) seems like one team was playing chess and the other was plugging holes with checkers.

To borrow a phrase from the great ex-Browns coach, Pat Shurmur: "Anytime you can spend big-time draft capital and extend a large deal to a guy with off-field issues, you just have to do it."

So you agree that it was a steal or you disagree based on their 2018 rank?

    :notes:

And before you answer, I'm just yanking your leg. It's not a binary kind of thing. :yank:

I do disagree with you on whether or not the Chiefs upgraded. I believe they did both in talent and age of player, but I'll reserve my thoughts on the compensation until I get a chance to think on it a bit. At first glance, I don't believe they overpaid.

You realize that says it was a steal for the Seahawks, right?

Obviously, I'm having fun with it... we can find just as many folks saying the opposite (maybe not the fleecing part) - that Kansas City got a helluva player, filled a major need, upside, blah-blah-blah.

I was looking at it through of of the lens of what our blockbuster offseason trade looked like (and netted us) versus the Chiefs. And how a common theme was Chiefs getting worse and Browns getting better all because of this guy...
