My great grandfather suffered from dementia and there are times you either joke about it or let it crush you in despair. Sorry but my personality (like much of my families) is you make a joke about it and roll on.
Absolutely agree. Life can make us laugh or it can make us cry. Our choice. There's not a whole lot of things that are so sad that we can't poke fun at it. Just gotta show some respect along the way.
well people treat family illnesses a little different and closer to the heart i guess. when it comes to family, i wouldn't bust on someone with a terrible illness.
Making a joke about an illness in general isn’t making fun of the person that has it or their close family. If I make a random joke about dementia...I’m not poking fun at the people that actually have it. Life’s way too short to start drawing lines in sand as to what we can laugh at and what we can’t. You can laugh at everything. Or at least you should be able to. If we can make jokes about Hitler and the Holocaust.....and yes, trust me, we can....then we can make jokes about anything. Humor is a human coping mechanism.
If I wasn't able to laugh at myself and my failing health, I don't know how I'd have made it this far. My grandpa suffers from debilitating Parkinson's. He says the same. If we're going down, might as well do it with as much joy as we can, rather than drowning in sorrows.
