Looking forward to 2019, Browns NFL Rookie Draft

Pretty sure you're going to have to get ahead of #20. And that's going to require a future 1st. Are you wiling to give that up?

No... I don't believe I am personally. I would need to study the probable pieces to next years draft before giving a certain answer though. I'm pretty high on Bush, but I don't know what might be available in the first round of 2020 yet...I'm sure the Browns scouts have a pretty good idea though.

#49 in 2019 and #32 in 2020? Sure... that seems reasonable.

I thought maybe I'd be bummed about not having a first round pick, but I'm not at all. The Browns did what I wanted them to do from the beginning, and that's get Baker a true #1 WR. Boy did they ever!

So now we must wait until day 2 of the draft, unless Dorsey makes another big move, which I honestly don't anticipate...

What if Jeffrey Simmons slid to #49? Would anyone be into that?

    :OK:

Depends on how he's recovering from his ACL injury. Would be a definite steal at #49

After telling me what you did...You know how I feel about drafting Simmons.

  7. TopDawg Legend

Yeah, I pretty much knew your thoughts on him. Was curious though if it made a difference, in anyone's view, taking a chance like that at #49 as opposed to first round #17?

  8. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

For me no... For Dorsey, I would be surprised if he didn't strongly consider it.

Only thing that bums me out is not really having to do any mock drafts.

So with that, here's one I'm putting together on the fly:

    Mock Draft 1.0: Post-Free Agency (1-16)

    1. Arizona Cardinals: Kyler Murray, QB Oklahoma. I don't like it, but I accept it as the general consensus. Drafting Murray would mean trading Rosen to someone - either Oakland or New York (Giants). I'm going with Giants.

    2. San Francisco 49ers: Quinnen Williams, DT Alabama. Might be the best IDL prospect since Ndamukong Suh. This team should be drafting a QB (Gar-crappolo = JAG).

    3. New York Jets: Josh Allen, EDGE Kentucky. Top EDGE prospect in the class and fills a need for Gregg Williams after they were spurned by Anthony Barr.

    4. Oakland Raiders: Dwayne Haskins, QB Ohio State. I feel bad about this because Oakland's a dumpster fire, but Haskins fits the QB mold for Mayock/Gruden. Gruden will see a raw talent he can mold and sell Derek Carr after another season.

    5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Rashan Gary, DL Michigan. I think Gary's been hyped a bit and had people not soured on Ed Oliver, they'd be saying the same thing about Gary - is he a DT or an EDGE? Either way, this team needs DL help and Gary's next man up.

    6. New York Giants: Montez Sweat, EDGE Mississippi State. Anytime you can trade a transcendent wide receiver and your top pass rusher, only to have to address those needs again in the draft, you just have to do it - to borrow a quote from Pat Shumur. Assuming they get Rosen in this instance, otherwise we're going with Drew Lock.

    7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Nick Bosa, EDGE Ohio State. Surprised? Shouldn't be. Bosa is incredibly overrated and any team drafting him is going on name and athletic profile. I smell another Barkevious Mingo here.

    8. Detroit Lions: Greedy Williams, CB Louisiana State. Big area of need and they get a guy who, when playing on all cylinders, is about as good as they come at cornerback.

    9. Buffalo Bills: D.K. Metcalf, WR Mississippi. After unsuccessfully trying to trade for Odell Beckham Jr. and Antonio Brown, it's pretty clear they're in the market for a premier wide receiver. While I think he's a bit more of a risk than some folks, he's likely WR1 in this class.

    10. Denver Broncos: Devin White, LB Louisiana State. HUGE area of need and while mocking Drew Lock here makes sense, he's not a 6'7" statue who plays from under center. Side-bar... John Elway is a joke as a GM and has created a bigger mess at QB than the Browns ever did.

    11. Cincinnati Bengals: Drew Lock, QB Missouri. Patiently wait and get... a late first round prospect. No real idea what they're doing, based on the moves so far.

    12. Green Bay Packers: Jawaan Taylor, OT Florida. Expensive, oft-injured franchise QB needs protection on the right side where incumbent Bulaga is a pending free agent.

    13. Miami Dolphins: Ed Oliver, DT. Another dumpster fire of a team, but it doesn't seem like they're tanking with the recent signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick... he's probably the best QB option they've had since Marino. Grab a stud defensive player who can get them out of the bottom in most defensive categories.

    14. Atlanta Falcons: Brian Burns, EDGE Florida State. Probably would have taken Oliver if he made it here, but Burns is a good option, too.

    15. Washington Redskins: N'Keal Harry, WR Arizona State. They need help at receiver and after badly missing on Doctson, they need to add another weapon for whomever is going to suit up at QB - Keenum (for now).

    16. Carolina Panthers: Jonah Williams, OT Alabama. No team has done more of a disservice to their franchise QB in the game's history than Carolina and Cam Newton. Seeing him struggle to generate velocity on throws due to hits taken last year informs this pick, who's a very, very solid young tackle.

    Mock Draft 1.0: Post-Free Agency (17-32)

    17. New York Giants (from Cleveland): Andre Dillard, OT Washington State. What a s**t show. Assuming they trade for Rosen, you would think they'd try to do something to protect him. But you'd also think they would want to give him an elite wide receiver to develop with, too. Might have to add a new hashtag... #ThanksSashi & #ThanksDave

    18. Minnesota Vikings: Cody Ford, OG Oklahoma. Whether by dumb luck or strong will, Minnesota seems to let the draft come to them and still get (1) a great player, and (2) a huge need filled. This time around - IOL Cody Ford who can help keep their $100 million man clean.

    19. Tennessee Titans: Marquise Brown, WR Oklahoma. A lot of people raised their eyebrows at the trade for Tannehill, but I think it's great. It gives Mariota another option to throw to. In all seriousness, this is a team that needs to get into the "Tank for Tua" sweepstakes because their poor QB play is holding them back. Give him (them) an option at receiver and let them continue to struggle, I guess.

    20. Pittsburgh Steelers: Devin Bush Jr., LB Michigan. It's lazy to put a receiver here, especially with their ability to find gems in the later rounds of the draft. Bush can play any LB spot in the defense and is a hyper-athlete. It makes too much sense.

    21. Seattle Seahawks: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, S Florida. Earl Thomas was a difference maker... and now he's gone. This team better re-up and hope they recapture that defensive magic because their window is almost closed with the NFC West being contended again.

    22. Baltimore Ravens: Joshua Jacobs, RB Alabama. After losing *checks notes* all their defenders this offseason, it makes sense to put a defensive player here, but I'm going with RB after they cut Collins. Jackson still needs development, but there's no receiver here worth slotting and maybe they have a plan on defense?

    23. Houston Texans: Byron Murphy, CB Washington. This is a team with Super Bowl potential that needs to shore up the pass defense. Murphy is a plug-and-play type corner who can fit almost any scheme.

    24. Oakland Raiders (from Chicago): T.J. Hockenson, TE Iowa. This could change if/when they re-sign Jared Cook, but right now, this is a team with a ton of needs and a young QB (see above) waiting to take over. Hockenson is an all-around TE prospect that will appeal much more to Mayock/Gruden than Noah Fant, his Hawkeye counterpart.

    25. Philadelphia Eagles: Nasir Adderley, S Delaware. They should draft a backup QB to help them cross the finish line when JAG Carson Wentz flops and/or gets hurt again around the post-season. As it stands, they grab the versatile Adderley who can help in multiple spots in their backfield.

    26. Indianapolis Colts: Christian Wilkins, DT Clemson. They obviously believe in Marlon Mack at running back, so turn to the defense which is the next-weakest spot to shore up. Wilkins can play multiple spots across their 34 front and he's been part of one of the most elite college fronts in recent memory.

    27. Oakland Raiders (from Dallas): Clelin Ferrell, EDGE Clemson. They ultimately traded away one of the elite defenders in the NFL (Mack) to have to replace them at some point in the first round. Ferrell has huge shoes to fill but is at least ready to go based on his production and experience.

    28. Los Angeles Chargers: Dalton Risner, OT Kansas State. A team with so few holes it's alarming they haven't gone deeper into the post season. Keeping Rivers upright must be paramount and Risner is a very good prospect.

(I almost had the Browns trading up here, but didn't have a prospect I loved enough. I would watch this spot is top tier talent starts dropping, though.)

    29. Kansas City Chiefs: Deandre Baker, CB Georgia. After hemorrhaging yards and points on defense, is it any wonder this can't be a defender? Baker isn't a great athlete, but is a very consistent defender who can start from Day 1 and has fringe Pro Bowl potential. Joe Haden-esque, I would say.

    30. Green Bay Packers (from New Orleans): Noah Fant, TE Iowa. Jimmy Graham was a product of Drew Brees... this much we can all agree on now, right? Rodgers needs weapons and Fant has unreal athleticism at the position. They could look to go defense here, but Fant is probably BPA at this point unless someone wants to roll the dice on Simmons (more on that later...).

    31. Los Angeles Rams: Justin Layne, CB Michigan State. The need has to be on defensive secondary, especially after losing Joyner to the Raiders (of all places). Big, physical cornerback here to help shore up that defense since there wasn't really a great option at range safety.

    32. Cleveland Browns (from New England): Jeffery Simmons, DT Mississppi State. Ironically, John Dorsey trades drafting #32 overall in 2020 for drafting #32 overall in 2019. Also ironically, is there any doubt Belichick would take a guy like Simmons here had he kept the pick?

NFL.com has him as the #2 prospect with a comp of Ndamukong Suh. He's widely-considered a Top 5 who is only dropping due to the ACL tear. He basically checks all the John Dorsey boxes: hyper productive (163 tackles, 33 TFL), incredible physical tools, fair or not - a domestic abuse incident... it just fits. It would give Cleveland a devastating rotation of tackles and his availability late into the season would give the defense a boost at the right time.

It's tough to find a weakness on offense and tougher still to find a player at #32 worth picking to fill a need on defense (CB or LB). By keeping #49 in the trade, Dorsey ensures he can circle back and fill that hole with that pick.

#80 + 2020 first round pick (600) for #32 (590) should get this deal done without players involved. (Technically, we could get #205 (9) back in compensation.)

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm representing Oakland in the GMO this year....I kinda figure this is a make or break year for Derek Carr.

With 3 first rounders I have a ton of options. I'm not opposed to trading Derek Carr, but I won't give him away. I've considered doing exactly what you mentioned in your mock with #4 overall, but I don't think I'd do it unless I dealt Carr ahead of time. Unfortunately the Arizona GM hasn't been participating, but a Carr trade could happen....And you are right about the Raiders being a complete dumpster fire. I've never seen so many shitty contracts. So I'm giving them the complete overhaul....It won't be the same Raiders. My Oakland team will compete for it all right away....:max:

Not sure if this will knock him down any, but I heard the medical on him they diagnosed a "minor" irregularity of the heart....We saw what that medical check did to Maurice Hurst last year, so this might be something to keep an eye on.

Mock Draft 1.0: Post-Free Agency (Browns Picks)

1.32 (f/New England): Jeffery Simmons, DT Mississippi State.

2.49: Mack Wilson, LB Alabama. Modern-day linebacker who can hit, cover, and diagnose plays. He comes from a tremendous program that's put some good ones into the NFL (NFL.com's comp on him is C.J. Mosley, in fact). Fills the biggest (IMHO) position of need left on the team at SAM linebacker.

    3.80: TRADED

4.119: Marquise Blair, FS Utah. New defensive coordinator Steve Wilks' specialty is the secondary. We have a hole to fill in Peppers and while Derrick Kindred makes sense for the in-the-box safety roll, Wilks runs a lot of Cover 3 and another rangy safety helps. Blair is a runner and hitter and a Wooster, Ohio native. Bring him home!

5.144 (f/Jacksonville - Carlos Hyde): Bobby Evans, OT Oklahoma. Evans was Mayfield's right tackle during his Heisman campaign season but switched to left tackle last season and garnered All Big-12 honors. While the Browns figure out their long-term plan to replace Joe Thomas, Evans gives them flexibility at both spots. Greg Robinson should hold down the LT spot for at least one more season but Desmond Harrison and Bobby Evans are potential pieces to build with moving forward and Evans could arguably push Chris Hubbard this year.

5.155: Wyatt Ray, EDGE Boston College. Another Genard Avery-type pick here for depth who gives the team flexibility as a down lineman or outside linebacker, depending on personnel. Not a powerful athlete like Avery, but productive in taking over for Harold Landry (44 tackles, 11.5 TFL, 9.0 sacks, 2 PBUs).

5.170 (f/New England - Josh Gordon): Kendall Sheffield, CB Ohio State. Perhaps unnecessary with the recent re-signing of Phillip Gaines, but a former five-star prospect from DBU. He has that trademark Urban Meyer speed for the position but needs seasoning before becoming a long-term starter.

6.189: David Sills, WR West Virginia. Annoying interest pieces will follow his story and he'll join a crowded receiver room in Cleveland, but we're taking a developmental piece at this point. Sills experience as a former QB seems to help him in his route running and he put together two very solid seasons in Morgantown the last two years.

7.221 (f/Jacksonville - Cody Kessler): Tommy Sweeney, TE Boston College. I see him as more of an H-back and reserve role TE than anything beyond that, but I'm not taking a kicker and it's pretty clear the current regime doesn't love Seth DeValve as much as I do. I expect Dorsey's recent swipe from Kansas City - Demetrius Harris - to serve as the primary back up to Njoku. It's clear the Browns want to get more out of the position, though.

It's tough to find a good home for Carr now that a lot of the QB chips have settled. Miami made a lot of sense until they signed Fitzpatrick. Still could happen, but just seems unlikely.

I think their best move would be to hold him and let Haskins develop (if they take him #4 overall). Haskins, like Trubisky in 2017, needs time to acclimate. Unlike Trubisky's situation, Carr isn't completely useless like Glennon.

The fact that I "forgot" Mark Ingram signed here reinforces the notion they need to draft a running back. Fitting it would be another guy from Alabama.
