I think you're overvaluing Nylander in the Canes' eyes, and undervaluing the D cited. I also believe CAR is much more interested in Kapanen .

 

Not sure what's going to happen in the off-season. Kapanen is a quick break out player and has made some memorable rushes with real quickness and great finishes.
When it comes to playmaking and setting up the play, possession, Nylander wins the day over Kapanen.

I don't really want to judge Nylander too harshly this season because he's missed training camp and it's not easy to build on the previous season.
The Canes could use the help up front, they have a good team and have been a good story this season but Nylander would give them much more depth up front.

Let's look at the situation here in the EC.

The Canes and BlueJackets look like a real safe bet to hang on to the 7th and 8th seed here. The habs are 3 pts back and philly doesn't look like they have a shot.

The Pens look like they're comfortably in there.

So what was wrong with the 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7 system?

The Canes are more than $16M under the cap and look like they'll make the playoffs. The yotes have Bolland and Hossa on IR and are holding $16M worth of junk and they look like they'll make it too.
These are good stories and shows that you don't need to spend all the way to the cap to have a playoff team. However, they'll fall short and if they did pick up a couple of elite players they just might be capable of winning it all.

 

Then i'll ask the obvious question... why wouldn't they deal for a star player?

 

Carolina looks good, especially right now. I believe they will be a tough 1st rounder, but that depends on who they draw.

Their very good at puck control in the offensive zone and get plenty of sog, but their goaltending may be the backbreaker in going deep... I don't trust Mrazek at all.

On defense, Pesce looks great now and their getting better at producing points from the blue-line. They are actually a fun team to watch.

 

Small market team with a very tight budget.

 

Canes ought to still go after a 1 or 2 season rental, if that's all they can afford. But, im no GM.

 

Rentals will cost them 1st round picks.

 

Not one player makes more than $6M on the Canes.

Did you get down to Buffalo? Sabres finally won a game! ROR had a mixed reaction with light booing and polite applause. The team did not give him a meaningful tribute. That's probably appropriate given their record while he was there.

 

I wish I had gone, I just had lunch at my parents place and was just relaxing on the sofa and ended up nodding out. When I got up half an hour later, guests came over and I stuck around. Had I planned it right, I would've went to bed early the night before and got there at 1, walk around the falls, have lunch and go there all relaxed. I'm sure it would've been a good day, and good tickets aren't as difficult or expensive to get like over here.
