Certainly holds water in the NCAA bracket. But, if you're in a field of 12 playoff teams and hold one of the top 4 seeds (by virtue of winning your division), that certainly makes you a contender. Perhaps not a favorite . . . but definitely a contender.

Plenty of NFL teams over the years have won their division without being a serious threat in the playoffs.

Did anyone view the Texans as a team with a serious shot of making the SB this season? What about last years Rams? Or 2016's 9-7 division winning Texans? Or hey....2015's 9-7 division winning Texans. The same season the Redskins went 9-7 and won the division...but there's zero chance they were a contender. There were WC teams better than they were.

Should I continue? Because I guarantee you every season there's a team that wins the division that we can pinpoint as not having a serious shot at making or winning the SB.

How about the 7-8-1 Carolina Panthers that won their division in 2014?

Anyone wanna tell me they were contenders?

Would you agree that a team, any team, cannot contend for a SB title if they are not in the playoffs?

What's happening, here? What am I denying? Clearly you've got some kind of comprehension and / or attitude problem. I'm not here to participate in it, with you.

Wow that's a mindblowing question there. You got me Lyman. Continue.....

  8. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

Yes. But, again, that does not make them a "Superbowl contender" by default.

Would you agree that a team cannot contend for a Superbowl if they're demonstrably not as good as their playoff counterparts?

It's a square and rectangle thing - you can be one without being the other.

Because the actual answer wasn't even close to what Jesse James said. Here's the interview:

    https://www.detroitlions.com/video/jesse-james-introductory-press-conference

The reporter actually asked and answered for Jesse in the question (paraphrasing): "So with the Steelers being more like the Kardashians I guess you were happy to get away from that?" And then Jesse says something like yeah that wasn't fun but had I stayed I would have faced it head on. At one point he said, "I definitely wasn't running away from that. Had I stayed I would have faced it head one but free agency had a different plan for me." He was complimentary of the Steelers throughout the entire interview including when that question was asked. Just more Florio BS. Had he posted the actual question and answer everyone would have saw it for what it is.

Every year 12 teams make the playoffs.

There are bound to be 1 or 2 if not more....that never have a serious chance at making the Super Bowl because they are going to go up against far superior competition.

Deny that all you want....it's true.

  11. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

I go back to my earlier post. ALL playoff teams are contending for a Super Bowl title. Ergo, they are, by definition, contenders.

But, being a playoff team doesn't mean that all 16 teams are favored to win the Super Bowl. Some of them will have better odds at winning it.

This was the context of the statement to which this conversation and my statements were referring:

If IrishDawg is saying that, by winning the division, the Browns should be in the playoffs, and therefore be contenders by your specified technical definition, well... Yes, they would be in the playoffs. And we would be giving IrishDawg very little credit for knowing remotely anything about the way sports work.

However, I'll take it, by the context of that statement, that he felt the Browns would be good enough to be considered potential Superbowl participants / winners if they first won the AFC North. If IrishDawg disagrees with that assessment, I'm sure he'll let us know.

  13. BearsWillWin Drunk (Probably) Patreon Champion Manager Bears Blackhawks Cubs

By the definition of the word contender in sports context...yes they're contenders.

Realistically....you know damn well they aren't all contenders because some of those teams have almost no chance of making the SB. There have been some teams that would need to have the other team not show up to have a chance to win.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm 64 years into my life and up to know I was honestly not aware of that....

  15. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

To my knowledge, no one has said the Browns are somehow instant favorites to win a Super Bowl. We merely said we could be contenders. And, if we win our division (or a wild card spot), we would be contending.

I refer to my most recent prior post - this was not the context in which this conversation was taking place.

I appreciate this, thanks. Many times Florio and the gang at PFT have been caught fabricating news or omission of important facts, like Crextin stated, for 'click bait'. This crew here on this site have caught them many times with twisted facts or flat out false information. That's why I always end my post with the credit to whom ever the data came from for this exact thing and also for just due credit to 'good' reporting.

    What does this:

    Have to do with anything?

  19. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

What context? Both Irish and TD have only said the Browns could be a Super Bowl contender. Nothing more, nothing less.

I've given up Lyman, they must first understand the meaning of a word before having actual conversation, it really isn't worthy of your time.
