This is the problem -- when you trade a guy as talented as Beckham it's impossible to get back his actual value in a trade. I saw from a analytics standpoint Beckham has a value over replacement (VAR) number of 1.6 wins. The combined VAR of what the Browns sent over is a theoretical 1.65 wins -- but only if pick 17 leads to a QB. If it is used on a non-QB it plummets to like .80 or something along those lines.

It's fair in the sense that its probably what they should have paid. But it's simply impossible to just trade a guy with Beckham's impact and expect an equal return. Same deal with the Mack trade. The Bears paid a "fair" amount -- but do we really think the Raiders are going to wind up with a player as good as Mack as a result? It seems unlikely.

With a salary cap, you can't have steak on every plate.

Looking at the guys they're looking to keep - all 26 or younger.

My only problem with the assessment of "fairness" on the Beckham deal:

Peppers still has room to grow and performance to prove, and if the Giants are going to be rebuilding, I don't really see how Peppers presents much of a difference from re-signing Collins. One may cost you more now, but in two years, if you're going to re-sign Peppers, you'll pay even more for him then. I don't really see the advantage to having him vs re-signing Collins and acquiring a different asset.

That's my only hang up in this trade. I see how the value is in the "fair" territory from a non-team-specific perspective, but once you actually look at the Giants' situation, I don't see the return on Peppers as being that considerable.

i like Haha for the name alone and he's a solid player.

Probably not. But you also have to factor in the money that was saved an applied to obtaining other players. Would the Raiders have been able to sign Antonio Brown if they had Khalil MAck on the books...?

    Lotta moving parts to consider.

    Chiefs release Eric Berry...

Tyrann Mathieu is joining the Chiefs, but he won’t be sharing the secondary with Eric Berry.

As we suggested when Mathieu agreed to terms with the team this week, the Chiefs have released Berry. Berry was set to make a salary of $12.4 million this season, but he will be moving on after nine years in the organization.

“I’d like to thank Eric for his contributions to our team and the Kansas City community over the last nine years,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “Seeing his passion and watching his love for the game has been truly remarkable. He’s a special person, and we wish him the best as his career moves forward.”

PFT has learned, via a league source, that the Chiefs will designate it as a post-June 1 move, which means that they’ll clear $9.55 million in cap space while being stuck with $6.95 million in dead money.

A torn Achilles in the first game of the 2017 season and a heel injury last season kept Berry off the field for most of the last two years. He’ll now try to show he can stay healthy and remain productive with another team. (PFT)

    Teddy Bridgewater visiting Dolphins...

Contrary to past reports, Teddy Bridgewater has not re-signed with the Saints and it appears there’s a good chance he’ll be heading back to his hometown for the 2019 season.

Bridgewater grew up in Miami and we heard that the Dolphins are interested in the possibility of signing him to be part of their quarterback plan in 2019. They’ll get to pitch him on that in person.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe was the first to report that Bridgewater will be visiting with the Dolphins on Thursday.

One can’t know exactly what Bridgewater is looking for in terms of a financial commitment from either team, but the chance to be a starter is much greater in Miami than it is in New Orleans. If that’s driving his decision, it may not be long before word of an actual deal surfaces. (PFT)

    49ers add Tevin Coleman...

For the second consecutive offseason, the 49ers are adding one of the top available free agent running backs.

Tevin Coleman has agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract with the 49ers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Coleman was the No. 51 player on our Free Agent Top 100, and he was the best available running back after the two ahead of him, Le'Veon Bell and Mark Ingram, had already signed.

The move makes clear that 49ers General Manager John Lynch wants a good running game. Last year Jerick McKinnon signed a four-year, $30 million contract with the 49ers, and after he got hurt Matt Breida became the team’s top running back. Coleman is joining that mix as the 49ers attempt to make more plays in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. (PFT)

39 of the Top 100 free agents remain available...

Free agency moved faster than ever in the NFL this year, but there are still plenty of good players available.

In our Free Agent Top 100, 39 players remain available as of Thursday morning.

Most of the top players have either been franchised or have signed: The top two available players are former Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby at No. 18 and former Rams defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh at No. 23.

Other well-known players still on the market include receiver Golden Tate, defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson, defensive end Bruce Irvin, linebacker Justin Houston, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix linebacker, Clay Matthews, receiver Randall Cobb and kicker Stephen Gostkowski. (PFT)

    Christian Covington signs with Cowboys...

The Cowboys won’t bring David Irving back and Randy Gregory is suspended indefinitely, so they needed to add a little help to their defensive line this offseason.

They’ve made their first addition to the group. According to multiple reports, the team has signed former Texans defensive end Christian Covington to a one-year deal.

Covington was a 2015 sixth-round pick and has appeared in 50 games over his four-year NFL career. Covington has 65 tackles, 7.5 sacks and a forced fumble in those appearances.

Covington joins Tyrone Crawford, Taco Charlton, Antwaun Woods and Maliek Collins under contract to Dallas for the 2019 season. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence has been franchise tagged, but has not signed the tag yet and is not expected to sign it as he did last season.

kind of pissed the Eagles didn't add him. they need a RB and $5 is cheap. Hope they sign Howard now?

$5M actually isn't all that cheap for a RB but in the grand scheme it really isn't much. I wonder what the heck they do and LB depth is pretty bad right now too.

Consistency for a year. I'm not upset. It's just his 5th year option.
