Weak offensive draft this year, heavy defense draft. I see why they are adding veterans. Grudens offense is incredibly hard to learn and they want proven vets. Gruden has always preferred vets on offense, especially at WR.
They got 4 of the 1st 35 picks in the draft. I see them going defense for 3 picks and 1 offensive pick

  2. I’m cool with that.

They had nobody to throw the ball to last year, and now Carr will be looking at Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams. Doesn't sound too shabby to me. They need influx of talent any way they can get it.

Eagles get his 2020 7th and DeSean Jackson
    Bucs get pick 6(35) a.k.a. #208

So if I understand things correctly, once a bid on a player has gone unraised for 48 hours I then still have to post again to affirm that I actually meant said bid? And this takes place within the bidding thread?

It's an open window to rescind a bid if you messed up and went over your cap.

If you don't declare a rescind of the winning offer he automatically goes on your roster after 24 hours.

Along the lines of the Brees contract being a hot mess, I just worked out the numbers and where they all came from.

Holy cow that one is bad. Spotrac and Overthecap disagree on the details, and neither one of them has the full story. Trying to work it out just from one or both of those web sites would make your head explode.

For anyone who actually cares, you have to go back to the 2016 contract for the pieces to start fitting together. That was a 2 year deal disguised as a 5 year deal by padding it with 3 bogus years that automatically voided at the end of the 2017 league year. It had a $30M signing bonus, and those extra years allowed the Saints to spread it out at $6M per year for five years rather than $15M per year for the real two years of the deal.

They signed the new 2018 contract before the old one voided, so he never left their roster. That allows them to keep the extra $6M per year from the 2016 signing bonus for each of the 2018-2020 caps. That's where the numbers from the web sites start getting screwy. They only tell you the 2018 contract details, and the 2018 numbers just happen to add up perfectly if the first of the two roster bonuses had NOT been prorated. (It was, which will drive you bonkers trying to get the rest of it to add up if you didn't know about the carry over from 2016.)

The new 2018 deal was another 2 year job disguised as 3 years so that a $13.5M bonus could be spread over an extra year. It's $4.5M per year for 2018-2020 rather than $6.75 per year for 2018-2019.

And now they have restructured again, converting $16.2M of this year's money into signing bonus. The restructure added another bogus year to the contract - but 2020 and 2021 will void on the last day of the 2019 league year. This new bonus counts $5.4M for each of 2019-2021.

So... he still has $6.8M for this year (the part that wasn't restructured) in either base or roster bonus money. OverTheCap says it's base salary, though the details of the split don't matter unless he retires in preseason. Then the restructured bonus counts $5.4M this year. And there's still $6M to count this year from the 2016 signing bonus plus $4.5M from the 2018 bonus. Add it up, and the cap figure this year is now $22.7 million, down from $33.5 million.

Of course, the extra $10.8 million that they temporarily freed up only adds to their pain if he retires after this season. They have already committed $21.3M to him on the 2020-2021 caps ($6 million from 2016, $4.5 million from 2018 and $5.4 million from the restructure in 2020 plus another $5.4M from the restructure in 2021).

The Saints seem to really not care. They are just going to kick that can down the road until he retires and they suck it up for a year when he does. At this rate though his number in retirement will be like 50% of the cap for a year...

Whew!!! Another good read Torgo, albeit a confusing one. Talk about committing to winning one more with him though.

Unfortunate about Max Unger retiring. That really won’t help their chances

In light of the Pats' signing of Tyrell Williams here, would it be OK if I utilize $3.5M of my cap space for a raise for Julian Edelman? I figure it's fine since he was under contract and I'm decreasing my available cap space, but just wanted to be sure it was cool. Seems like the right thing to do...I suspect if the Pats had succeeded in snagging Humphries IRL that an upward adjustment for Edelman would've followed (and still may, though it will likely be almost all somewhat reasonably attainable incentives, similar to what they've done with Gronk the last two years and Brady last year).

Underdog I see no problem. Just to be safe keep it unofficial in case you need it for draft pool.

Jags GM made one signing and had a trade going with me that was kinda important but he hasn't been on since. Bummer.

As for my bro he forgot since the weekend was busy and if he doesn't come on today then he is just lazy.

I know the feeling...I've been trying to get a deal done with Arizona. No response.

When we get near the draft time if he isn't back I'll see if the new owner would do the trade we seemed to have. I guess.

lol! Well good luck with that...If you happen to hear from the Cards GM, tell him to check his PM's.

If I missed it somewhere, I apologize in advance. But can we please establish starting dates for Vet Minimum bids and the draft?

I have some shit coming up IRL in the next couple of weeks that I can still reschedule but I dont know if I have to reschedule them.

Not sure where to mention coaching moves, so I'll list these here and in the free agent thread:

Falcons hire Bill Musgrave to the position of Offensive Passing Game Coordinator. (It's a weird role, but the real life team actually has it. Even stranger, that role is currently held by Raheem Morris, a defensive coach. I'm moving Morris back over to defense.)

Falcons hire Hue Jackson (you're welcome, America) as wide receivers coach.

Sometimes it seems like the real team is trying to self-implode with their coaching moves. Last year they took an offensive assistant who hadn't worked with WRs in 10 years and named him WR coach.

He has never worked with RBs before. So naturally they moved him over to be the RB coach this year, taking the former RB coach (Bernie Parmalee - an actual RB) and making him the assistant special teams coach instead. So now the only WR coach they have is Raheem Morris, the ex-Bucs head coach who had been a defensive coach his entire career before being named as offensive passing game coordinator.

They also replaced the assistant OL coach with a guy from their scouting department.

Musgrave instead of Morris is a big step up for that passing game role. Added bonus: he and Matt Ryan already know each other very well, as Musgrave was QB coach here for Ryan's first three seasons. Second added bonus: the defense needs Morris back right now, as Quinn is planning to call the defensive plays himself.

Jackson was obviously a disaster as a head coach, but once upon a time he was a pretty good WR coach. I need someone with experience to put the UDFAs through their drills. He'll do. Otherwise he will have no game planning, decision making, or other responsibilities of significance.
