Misses are part of the game both bust and surprises (think about all the guys who passed on Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Russell Wilson, Tyrek Hill or Antonio Brown) . Someti es it does cost people their jobs sometimes it doesnt. How do some scouts get it so wrong? That is the million dollar question. Maybe part of it comes from drafting for potential rather than what you see. Maybe sometimes it from wanting to be right or the im going to prove everyone else wrong syndrome. If they nailed it 100% all the time how boring would sports be? Of course its often a bit funny that the guys who drafted the like of brady, montana ect get all kinds of credit when maybe they shouldnt becuase dont forget they passed on the player multiple times themselves. They didnt know they were going to become the beast that they did because if they did they woild not have left them out there like they did.
your loss. i wasn't disagreeing with you axe about emtman and injuries. it was your selective quoting was my issue. jeez. i admitted i was wrong about emtman and the bust tag.
great post. and like axe posted so well "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane." great story on the scout who convinced George Steinbrenner to take Derek Jeter after Steinbrenner refused to take him. Scout went up to Kalamazoo, Michigan to scout Jeter. He was a skinny, slap hitting SS. Steinbrenner wanted no part of him. The scouting video of the guy freezing his ass off watching Jeter was comical as the camera was shaking and footage grainy. The guy was timing Jeter's run speeds to first and second base with a handheld stop watch. he watched his at-bats and how he could hit to all fields etc. Big George didn't want "some skinny 170 pound slap hitting kid from Michigan." The scout told him if you take this kid, he will change your franchise. The scout put his reputation on taking Jeter. 3400+ hits, 5 WS rings later and a lock for the HOF, says he was right and Steinbrenner wrong. When Jeter was closing in on 3000 hits, he had the scout and his wife flown into NY and put up in NY and Yankee stadium for the weekend for the 3000th hit. The scout was on the field after the 3000th hit game. Jeter said if it wasn't for him, he wouldn't be a Yankee and his entire career would be different. Looking at his HS stats, 23 RBIs doesn't scream future HOF'er to me. Maybe it was his .508 batting average. Haha. The scout saw something to convince Big George to take him and for Jeter to pass up on college baseball as well. Pretty amazing.
axe-we disagree. im a pain in a the ass. you're sometimes a pain in the ass. you're a Cowboys fans. I'm an Eagles fan. We are meant to battle, squabble and disagree. don't walk away from this board or any NFL news just because im in the conversation man. Come on back and live to battle again.
Not walking away from the board or NFL news ... just not going to engage with you on football convos.
On the Browns/Giants trade... Took some time to think this over but, all in all, I don't believe I see a loser in this scenario. First, for the Browns, it's a double whammy within the AFC North. Arguably the best receiver in the league just left the division for 'greener' pastures and Cleveland responds by trading for, IMO, a top 3 receiver in the NFL. The North will now feature Odell, A.J. and Juju as the high end receiving options. That puts the Browns as the lead dog in that race. Giving up the 17th overall, Peppers and a 3rd for Beckham makes sense for Cleveland. He's a known quantity and the Browns are in a position to make a major swing in the hierarchy within the division. It expedites the learning curve for Baker, adds an element that defenses will have to account for on every down and creates space for the rest of the skill position players on offense. The biggest beneficiary of this trade may actually be Nick Chubb. For the Giants, I believe once the opportunity presented itself to move on from Beckham's contract while filling the whole created at safety for Collins, it all came down to whether or not the compensation would be good enough on draft picks to move into the #1 overall spot. New York can now give up the #6 and #17 (possibly need a mid round kicker so that 3rd has real value) to go up and get their quarterback with a trade to the Cardinals. I still believe this is the kind of deal Arizona was looking for in this draft as it will give them multiple opportunities to address the offensive line and build around Josh Rosen, a player they gave up draft capital last season to move up for. Beckham does have some injury history over his first few years in the NFL and, with that being a factor, has not had double digit touchdowns for the last two seasons. Something that I'm sure New York factored into when making this decision. The interesting part of this is that I don't believe the Giants went into this off-season with the intent of moving Odell. So, what changed their mind? Could it be that Kyler Murray declared, or was it just a situation that they couldn't pass up on? The rumor mill around New York is going to get real interesting leading up to the draft...
I think the most underrated part of this trade is Peppers. Jabril really developed this year into a nice player and the trajectory is pointing significantly upward. A Giants fan could really look at this as getting (2) #1s and a #3. When's the last time a team received that kind of compensation for a non-QB?
I have heard a helluva lot since last night about how the Giants we're stupid for taking Barkley last year instead of the second best QB in that draft, whomever they thought that was. Maybe they only thought Mayfield was worth the #2 pick...with this trade they might just use that capital to ALSO get a QB that could end up better than the second best of 2018. That is how you build a team.. I truly think both teams could end up on the winning end of this deal when it's all said and done.
I agree with the potential for Peppers development. That's the main reason I led with him when discussing compensation because I believe the Giants were looking to fill the void created by Collins (not necessarily with a Beckham trade but were actively looking to make a move for safety) and wound up with the opportunity to recreate their draft positioning in the first round. Would they have still made this trade without the additional 3rd? Possibly, but in a numbers game where additional picks matter (there will be competition for that top pick) having the ability to throw in a pair of 3rds if necessary could be what ices the deal. As for the last time a team made this kind of haul on a non-QB, I'd have to dig but the only trade with draft picks that pops into my head with two firsts for a non-passer would be Ditka/Ricky Williams.
I'm thinking that Murray declaring has changed how several quarterback needy teams intend to approach this draft.
I REALLY liked Peppers coming out, and wish he would have fallen a couple more slots to Dallas (although they STILL might have gone DE).
Peppers is a Jersey kid as well. Grew up like 15 minutes from Giants stadium. A clean replacement for Collins that comes cheap for a few years and he gets to play near home. It will be a story line at some point once we get past the more obvious story line of screw Gettleman in his stupid face.
For the record EVERTHING we heard coming out of Giants camp was Darnold was their guy if they went QB. Shurmer liked Allen but the entire organization liked Darnold. They also met with Rosen no less than three times trying to understand if he could be the face of their franchise. Gettleman really wasn't going to take a QB unless the Browns took Barkley #1 overall. He openly said he wasn't ever considering anyone else if Barkley was on the board.
