Bears have created 11 million in cap space by turning 13 million of Khalil Mack's salary into a signing and roster bonus.
I'm not enjoying this FA season so far. Callahan is most certainly gone and we replace him with Buster Skrine. That's a massive downgrade to me if he's the guy they think replaces Callahan. I don't mind the Mike Davis signing if it means Mizzell is put out to pasture. Amos seems gone and a lot of the other safeties have already signed....so what's the plan there? Making an overpriced splurge on Le'veon Bell doesn't excite me at all.
Hate this. Hate it with every bone in my body. I was never a big Amos fan. I wanted him back at a reasonable number, and was confident he could continue to do an ample job for this D. But now I have to actively root against him, and that's not what I wanted. That said, I think Amos got a lot of cover from the rest of this D, at times. I don't know what the Packers gave him, but if they overpaid, hamstringing them elsewhere... I guess that's a silver lining. Yeah, I'm in the same place. Looks like the team freed up money only to downgrade and lose a reliable player at nickel, put us back in the land of terrifying uncertainty at safety, and watch as possible replacement players get signed elsewhere. I get it, the money is big and flying around. But if this team is that close to a Super Bowl, you've gotta make the decisions now to put this team over the edge. If they underachieve again next year, we may be looking at the decisions made months as the culprit...
Amos is extremely gap sound and position-ally responsible. Always lined up right....always in the right position. So underrated. Packers have added a pass rusher in Za'Darius Smith and are looking to add another in Preston Smith while they upgrade the backend of the defense. Ryan Pace has work to do.
No one expected the money to fly around for safeties this offseason after the way the safety market was so soft last year. Earl Thomas isn't signed...but the price plus the injury concern is scary. The upside, however, is friggin massive. I don't want anything to do with Clinton-Dix....but Clayton Geathers is sitting out there and he could probably be had much cheaper.
Even with the cap space the Bears have created it’s not going to be enough to sign Bell. And thankfully so. That money would be better spent extending Whitehair, signing some lower tier FA’s and drafting well. Maybe we start getting some comp picks. Imagine that.
Amos got 4 years at 37 mil with 21 of that in the first two years. Bears probably wouldn’t pay that because they know they will need to pay E Jax much more than that in the not so distant future.
I would have paid Amos 6-7 mil a year for that term, without a problem. 9 mil? Too rich for my blood. They have other guys that will need to be paid, Jackson included, and I think Amos may end up being the least important among them. That said, unless you're putting that money to good use elsewhere, losing a reliable starting safety on a top defense is... not great.
They are paying him 10 mil over 2 years so he better. Nagy needs to also find other use for him as a receiver and runner out of the backfield to justify that salary.
Don't like how this offseason is panning out. Defensive coaching got decimated, and in a similar vein we've now got two defensive players due to hit FA with the only clear rule being don't lose both. So whats gonna happen? Lose both. Horseshit. This won't surprise anyone but yes, i blame Pace. He should've been putting contract offers in front of Callahan from at least week10 last season, when he may have gotten him to sign and for a more manageable fee on the basis of added security against injury etc. Skrine does nothing for me, dudes just a massive downgrade. What is the true value of a slot corner in todays game? We can revisit this one next season when teams are picking peanuts out of Skrines ass every week. I do like the Mike Davis signing though. Haven't seen the numbers but it can't be a big contract. Solid move, like it. Absolutely. This feels slightly like Eddie Royal to me. We're gonna take a sub-standard receiver and overpay him cos look he can also play ST. There needs to be more than that. Nagy's gonna have to earn his money with this one, but we know how creative he can be. There's a chance he can make this into a good signing. But overall, even though we knew the Bears wouldn't go crazy in FA this year, i was expecting a little more than this given that Pace has freed up a fair bit of CAP space with moves recently. Don't screw up the Safety position now.
One of the underrated facets of Patterson’s game is his ability as a runner. Ran the ball for the Pats 42 times last season for 5.4 yards a clip. His career average is higher and he has 7 touchdowns on the ground. So this is an area where Nagy’s creativity can be a huge bonus....I’m still having a hard time with this signing though. I feel rather than pay that amount you could have drafted a player with a similar skill set and developed him.
Bears offense will now have... AR Anthony Miller Taylor Gabriel Trey Burton Cordarelle Patterson Jordan Howard or whoever replaces him Tarik Cohen Mike Davis Adam Shaheen Plus whoever they draft. Nothing there that will make a defense wet their pants....but what it does do is give a creative coach a lot of options.
