Recommendations for a good Bock beer

Now that lent is here along with Bock beer I'm looking for a recommendation for a good bock that I can likely get in Chicago and not some micro brewery in Bumfuck Egypt.
If anybody can answer that question and who's opinions I respect more than those of you on these boards.

Can’t help you because all the good bocks are in Europe and they water them down before they import to the US. I don’t believe that they have beer in bumfuck Egypt either.

  3. tunafat Franchise Player Bears

Well if that is the case then it's not a bock, and it doesn't make sense because part of the process is freezing it and removing the ice which would be mostly water. So why would they add water after they remove the water? Because that would be a lager not a bock. I know years ago many of the local brewers in the Midwest would create a bock every year around Easter. I don't know who does anymore and was seeking advice if anyone knew a good one.
Why yes they do because anywhere other than Chicago is Bumfuck Egypt.

I don’t mean that they literally put water in it. They just don’t have the same alcohol content.

    Such a bizarre thread...

You know what I am trying to say. Canadian beer is stronger than American beer.? The US is the only country where they give you weak beer.

  7. tunafat Franchise Player Bears

Yeah gidion that is a myth. I agree there are many US brewers that brew some weak ass shit, but the claim that Canuck beer is stronger is wrong. We had this very discussion on here a number of years ago. While it may be reported different content on the labels of the same brands from both countries it all comes down to how it's measured. While Canada measures content by volume the US measures alcohol content by weight and since alcohol is lighter than water there lies the difference.

Bizarre??? Bizarre??? Why is it so bizarre that when I have an alcohol related question that I post it on here?
I mean yeah if this was the "Bendy Brigade Forum" then yeah that would be bizarre, and I wouldn't expect an answer. Instead I post on here to the experts in all things alcohol. How is that bizarre? :SEP:

Canadian beer used to be stronger than US beer. Fact.

    Now? Hell no.

Can’t help you on bock beers though. Not my thing. If you want a good APA or IPA I can give you many options.

As far as bocks that you should be able to find tuna...I like Troegs and Ayinger makes a "Celebrator" that pretty decent, but if you are looking for a true bock...I'd find some Troegs Troegenator, that's my favorite bock and it's usually pretty easy to find in Ohio, so it might be available in Illinois. As far as nationwide, Michelob makes a Bock, but I personally don't like it.

It's the word Bock. That's the sound that chickens make when they're hunting for insects. Is the beer at least made out of chicken?

Anchor Brewing always makes good stuff, and I enjoy theirs.

Bell's is amongst my favorite breweries, and their bock is quality, but not really my preferred taste.

New Glarus is a common brewery for the midwest that makes one, called Uff-Da. Haven't tried it, so it's your call...

Other than that, I know of Shiner Bock, from the Shiner brewery in TX. It's more than your crappy Michelob bock fare, but I don't think it's quite up to par for someone with great taste. Then again, given the limit of options, it should do just fine.

That's about all I've got. I never realized there was a good reason to go digging through bocks, but now I do.

I’d check out Schneider Weiss Aventinus (dopplebock). Can find a few different beers by Schneider Weiss at Binnys. Not sure about freshness or how quickly the product moves off the shelf though, plus it’s kinda pricey.

I’ve also heard positive comments about Metropolitan Brewing and that they do a lot of German style beers. Not sure what their current lineup looks like though. Probably would be a cheaper option.

I'd like to help but I think lent is one of the silliest inventions that religion has brought forth. So on principle.....I can't help.

I'm going to head to a Binny's when I'm on the north side this week, but I don't think I'll find any New Glarus there generally you need to make a run to Wisconsin for those brews. Except for De Proef Abtsolution collaboration with New Glarus which is a dark Belgian ale and mostly sold out and they won't even list a damn price which isn't what I'm looking for in either price point or brew.
The last time I had a bock was probably in my 20's when I drank any kind of piss beer, and having a bock and getting more fucked from it was like drinking Mickey's.
All things considered from what I remember it was a more robust taste from what I was drinking at the time and enjoyed it and from what I remember could of been made from a now defunct brewery that made piss beer like Drewerys, Meister Brau, or Falstaff. I think I can up my game a little now.
I think religion is one of the silliest inventions that people brought forth. I want to find a bock that those guys were drinking when they wrote the bible.
    Thanks all for the suggestions.

I thought you were off the wall in saying that until I said it out loud numerous times. Bock bock bock bock bock. lol
BUT to call my thread bizarre o_O I'm going to need two things from you
    1. Tell Tim I need an office, and then...
    2. Get into my office now!

Ah, I didn't realize New Glarus wasn't readily available. I was just going off what I was told. Being in South Florida, I just assumed I didn't have it because of the region. I learned something new.

I bought this once on a whim: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/435/6340/

I agree with the "ok" rating but that was probably 20 years ago now. Despite being a Wisconsin brew I don't think it's like New Glarus where you have to take a trip north. Also curious your report on some of these as I wouldn't mind seeing if I could get some here. Seattle is fucking overrun with IPAs, I used to like them but it's ALL anyone drinks out here.

Looks like that might be your best option in Seattle. I guess one of the good things about traveling and being a beer geek is I can easily find what I’m looking for wherever I’m at lol
