I don't have an authority on the subject cat. I was bored and made what I thought at the time was just an innocuous comment that represented my opinion.

I think there's way too much hype surrounding the combine. It's talked about on the TV too much and fans overreact to it.

I get there is value to NFL scouts and GMs....especially on the medical side...a point that was made an I agree to.

I also think....you're taking this subject a bit too seriously.

Any variation of the word anal should never also be used with the word surprise or any of it's variants. No one wants an anal surprise.

Okay one.....if I was your brother I would have pushed you out a window a long time ago. Or smothered you in your sleep.

Two, I was joking, mostly, about this the entire time.

    And three, just shut up.

The draft wasn’t on TV when I was young. ESPN actually did something that we appreciate by airing the draft.

Airing the draft is great. Airing it over 3 days is lame.

Airing the combine is just silly to me. At least as extensively as they do.

The draft was two days when it started on TV and had more rounds.

I loved that format. I get taking the first night of the draft and making it prime time TV. But they drag the rest of it out way too much.

    This format gets better ratings...

They found that Sundays were a bad day to air the final rounds.. They also found that by airing the first round on a Thursday night, it gets ratings as high as a Thursday night football game..easy choice there. Then the 2nd round is so hyped that Friday gets air time, even if it's not quite what Thursday night is, it's still better than the 10 hour marathon that Saturday used to be...BUT the current Saturday format gets much higher ratings than what Sunday used to be. They can get a lot more advertising dollars for the two nights in Prime time than they used to get on the entire Sunday schedule, and still have Saturday's revenue to show for it.

Everyone that's married or has a girlfriend knows, it's not easy, but plausible to get out of a Saturday for a once a year event...there is no way they are letting you out of Saturday AND Sunday though. All it takes is a good stats guy to show you this is the best format.

As for it being lame..I'm sure we all have things we do or enjoy that others think are lame, while the ones tuning in enjoy it immensely. That's why there's 300 channels to watch and thousands of other activities. Pretty easy to tune out that it's even happening if you really want to...This is the first year I didn't watch a single minute live and it didn't really effect me in any way since I am so busy. I get the highlights and that is more than enough... but I remember a time when ANYTHING NFL related was a welcome sight for me. I am still excited about the draft, even if I might not get to watch the 4-7 rounds.. Things change, but having the opportunity remains, which is a good thing for those that get entertainment out of it.

The fact it is televised has nothing to do with it's importance, that's for money... What the GMs/Coaches/Owners get out of it in reality is an overwhelming wealth of information being exchanged. There are business deals being discussed with representatives from all franchises, as well as players and their agents, in one spot. It's like an owners meeting with 8-10 other representatives from each team there to gather information... AND they get to talk to as many as 60 prospects in one week. There is no way for the same guy (like John Dorsey) to make it to all these prospects Pro Days. Beyond that, they only get 30 visits from outside the area school's prospects.. Narrowing that down can be a beneficial part of this week. Going to the Pro Day is also important, you get to see scripted workouts and interact with them once again, but at the Pro Day you are competing with other teams who also want to meet with a prospect, at the combine you are limited to 15 minutes per prospect, so if every team wants to meet with a guy, they will most likely get their chance. There are no such limitations at a pro day, so one franchise could monopolize a prospects day, then you would have to spend one of your 30 visits on him if you miss out...You might find in 15 minutes time, you don't want to waste anymore on him..seems many teams felt this way about Jachai Polite. Thanks to all the media there, WE also got to see some of this insight.. This guy is not professional material today. He could mature, but right now, he looks like a long term investment prospect that needs to learn a lot, before he can even start learning the pro game.

    Overthinking it just a bit....

Yeah but now I meet up with a few friends on Thursday night and my wife thinks draft time is over! I completely get the logic for the multi-day draft. I just personally enjoyed the all day Saturday / Sunday format better. Maybe it was just because I was in a different place in my life or the nostalgia of watching the draft all day with my dad with my marked up newspaper in hand. Either way they make everything a spectacle if they can so there will be no turning back...

The draft is your team - and rivals - actually doing something to improve themselves. Watching guys jump in spandex isn't. The NFL hardly "needs" the money.

Careful about buying hook, line and sinker into the Combine, Cat. Two words of caution for you: Mike Mamula.

i know about about bust Axe. I think the QB i posted about Murray should've stuck with baseball and the A's and will be a huge bust.

It's capitalism, if there's money to be made, then why wouldn't you?

It's a hobby of sorts. It gives you a window into the inner workings of a sport America obsesses over. I would say, 80% of the people watching, don't want to see guys in spandex, but getting first hand knowledge of the players you watch in college and have hopes that your NFL teams take, is entertaining.

WE OBSESS, that is what Americans do. Some obsess over being assholes on message boards, others obsess over food or drink, others obsess over sleep...everyone obsesses.

When there is a marketable obsession, someone is going to make money on it.

Why would they take it off the air, simply because some people think it's dumb?

Obsess...here we are talking about why it is on the air...

Football is like a religion for a lot of viewers. That’s why the combine and draft can garner such good ratings.

I've never had to obsess over being an asshole....it simply comes natural to me and I'm really good at it.

I didn't object to the NFL making a buck off obsessed suckers...err, fans. I was questioning Cat's position that the NFL "needed" TV dollars.
