Looking forward to 2019, Browns NFL Rookie Draft

When I saw the 10 picks instead of 11, I assumed the missing 7th round pick was the one that was part of the Josh Gordon trade with New England. My first thought was that pick was contingent on something that didn't happen (like being on the active roster for "x" number of games).

  2. TopDawg Legend

Idk..I don't remember reading about a contingency, but I'm sure Irish is accurate on that.

Not that giving them back their 7th really matters that much. If it weren't for comp picks, wouldn't that have been the "Mr. Irrelevant" pick anyway?

  3. TopDawg Legend

Or maybe I misinterpreted that and it was our 7th....Either way, not a big deal.

  4. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

Agreed. Unless that pick could have been the final deal maker in moving up in a prior round. That's why EVERY pick counts.

  5. TopDawg Legend

They all count. And they count in the 7th, just not for much....Ya just never know about the draft. Maybe a lack of extra 7th rounder costing you a chance to move up, is a blessing in disguise. What if the Pats had used that 6th rounder (pick 199) in the 2000 draft, to move up for some bum LB in the 4th round?

The Browns threads are pretty dead considering we are just about to start the NFL Combine...

Do I think the Browns will really take a WR in the first round?
Though I wouldn't rule out the possibility, I'd agree that it's unlikely at pick #17. Not only because we may have more pressing needs, but it wouldn't shock me if my favorite 2 WR's were already off the board anyway...

My gut tells me it's going to be a DT, OT or EDGE rusher, but it's hard to narrow down any further. I would put the likelihood of a CB at #17 slightly higher than WR...

These are just some (pre-Combine) thoughts....

We need to re-ignite the football chatter up in here....

Everyone's too busy adding hits to the Bears boards playing baby's music games...

My prediction is that we will be changing our predictions several times between now and the end of April.

We all have our pre-combine thoughts, which will most likely be influenced by the combine, then eventually cemented once we know what direction they are going in free agency.

The fact Dorsey has not re-signed Perriman yet has me wondering if you aren't closer to accurate on the WR at #17 though. I still expect Higgins to get tendered, so I think he is a lock, but I don't think we are going into 2019 with the same WRs sans Perriman. If we don't re-sign him, he will be replaced either in free agency, a trade or the draft. If it's the draft, it wouldn't shock me to be a higher draft pick...What I DON'T believe is that Perriman is being replaced by Jaelen Strong.

My current thoughts center around team needs. The combine results won't change those needs whatsoever. They may flip some names around on who fills those needs . . . but the needs remain the same.

  9. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Exactly, when talking about specific players, those names can change though...no? Not sure why you are calling me out on this post...

Now for the sake of argument... Are you specifically going to draft out of need only? If not, the combine COULD actually change the list of needs, based solely on the availability of players at a source of need.

If we do fail to sign another significant WR between now and April, I would agree with TD that WR goes right up there on my list of needs. I have said all along that I personally don't see on film a WR above that of a significant number of names in front of them, so my list of needs would then move WR down simply out of availability.

The combine could influence some of those names I have ahead of WR as of right now though. I still need to see certain things from edge rushers for instance, to show me the film isn't just them taking advantage of less competition. They will need to have physical parameters that put them in a category presentable for success. If they have lower numbers, and say a WR has extraordinary numbers in a drill that contradicts what I am seeing on film, then that WR could move into a position where WR would become a consideration once again.

The needs won't change based on the combine, the availability of players to fill the needs absolutely could in my opinion.

I guess, my question for you is...is there a team need that trumps talent in the draft currently? If that were the case, then I could see your point. I personally don't have a need that I put up top out of dire straights for need.

Damn, Irish . . . I wasn't calling you or anyone else out! I was simply stating how I think. Nothing more, nothing else.

Sorry Lym... dealing with BWW has given me an edge...I sincerely apologize.

So, what are your thoughts on team needs...I agree with TD, we need to get this conversation started back up..

Personally, as of today, I have it ranked like this:

    1. Left Tackle
    2. Cornerback
    3. Defensive Tackle - 3 technique
    4. Wide Receiver
    5. Sam LB
    6. Kicker
    7. Defensive End
    8. Mike LB
    9. Will LB
    10. Center
    11. Safety
    12. QB

    Thoughts on the above list:
    1. If Robinson is re-signed, this position would move below ILB
    2. If we KNOW Ward and Mitchell come into 2019 without any injury issues to worry about, I wouldn't be as worried about CB. Unfortunately the worries are there. Other injuries and current status of free agents make this a huge position deficiency as we currently sit.
    3. We need an upgrade at DT, this issue is real and staring us in the face. It could easily rise to the top of the list entering the draft for me dependent on moves at other positions.
    4. I would feel MUCH better having Higgins and Perriman under contract. Without them, we have big question marks at the position entering the year.
    5. I'm not sure Collins will even be a Brown in 2019, he will need to be replaced if they have ANY inclination to move on, we need someone behind starter Avery.
    6. Kicker is pretty obvious, not sure he isn't already on the team, but competition is essential!
    7. Upgrade is needed, imo. It isn't the most glaring need on the team, we have players that can play in the NFL, but an upgrade could make this defense elite.
    8. I'm more confident in Schobert than others. An off season to get back to 100% health will do him wonders, but we need to groom someone behind him just in case.
    9. Injuries are the reason behind this one.
    10. Not a huge need imo, but Tretter might be biding his time here. I liked how he played in 2018, but his injuries in 2018 are always in the back of my head. He played through them, but...
    11. Honestly, I don't have any issues with this position at this time at either FS or SS...depth is the reason I put them here and have left off TE, RB and G completely.
    12. Drew Stanton is very capable IMO, eventually we need to start grooming his replacement since he is 35.

Combine some crazy work/personal stuff with the fact that our season was *not* dead in the water by early October and you've got me sitting on the outside looking in on these discussions this year.

I personally don't see it happening.

While it's easy to say "Best Player Available", a 7-8-1 record (and even a 5-3 record with Williams/Kitchens) still shows this is/was an incomplete roster. The Browns do still have needs and they're in the position to address those last few pieces in order to bolster the roster and make a serious run at the post season.

To me, those needs are: EDGE, IDL, and CB (not particularly in that order).

The inability to identify a pass rushers (outside of generational Myles Garrett) is astounding. Larry Ogunjobi is as good a young interior defender as you're going to find in the NFL today, but there's nothing else on the roster to help out. Lastly, only Ward and Mitchell showed they can hold down a perimeter corner spot and both suffered injuries throughout the 2018 season.

I think I probably agree with #1 being cornerback. I'm surprised DE is so low on the list, given our how poor our pass rush was last season. Lot of linebackers on the list, which I would probably agree with, too. Outside of Schobert, there are question marks.

I think your #9 (backup left tackle) could be satisfied by Desmond Harrison. I know we're getting down on your list at this point, but #10 (center) should be satisfied as well. J.C. Tretter is one of the best in the business and played at a high enough level (through injury, no less) to keep a highly drafted rookie on the bench.

I think my Top 5 needs are: CB, IDL, EDGE, WR, and S.

Honestly it's because I believe if we take care of the DT position, I think that makes Emmanuel Ogbah better and more than serviceable. I think it we get another edge without taking care of the interior, it will not make as much of an impact.

Now, that said, an upgrade to an absolute stud makes the needle move. It is just a little harder for me to put together a scenario for that kind of move based on availability in both free agency and the draft. I think we would spend our time more wisely focusing on DT.

I'm kinda surprised to see Safety and no OT....

I wish we were into the 2nd wave of free agency right now, so we could possibly eliminate a need or two, and stop blindly speculating...

I love the music game...You care about hits?

They got the cool "Movie thread" over there too...lol! What can I say? They are better at the games and non-football stuff over there.

I would love to see the Browns defensive front 7 with these four guys anchoring the line

    LDE Myles Garrett
    LDT Christian Wilkins
    RDT Larry Ogunjobi
    RDE Emmanuel Ogbah
