They didn't just draft Rosen -- they traded up to get him. It cost them an extra 3 and 5 to get their hands on the kid. That's a lot of capital to give for a guy and turn on him that quickly. Plus the GM who made that decision is still in charge. I don't see how they could reasonably trade him. Aside from the fact they traded up to get him in the first place they would escalate the signing bonus on a top 10 pick if they trade him -- taking a negative cap hit this season just to move him. That said if the Cardinals really wanted to move him I would be talking to them. His contract when traded is pennies to another team. I think it's like 6 or 8 million over 3 years and he is still the kid who had great college film. He was just in a terrible situation and he still had moments of flash. I really felt sorry for him watching him throw a perfect pass to the spot his receiver was supposed to be but instead he just decided to stop running a route but the defenders didn't... I don't know what it would take to get him though. Trading draft picks for players is often one of the biggest market inequalities in the NFL. After a "bad" rookie season is he still worth a 1st round pick in a trade with one less year of cheap control on his contract?
Goes to show what good team management CAN look like. Rams won’t get anything like that next year though (Suh and others)
You don't think they will be in line for a 3rd for Suh? I'm curious, what kind of contract do you think Suh will get? I was thinking like a 2 YR/$22M fully guaranteed deal...which, I believe would qualify for a 3rd rounder, unless they sign another free agent of similar value. They might also lose Joyner...I'm not sure they have the cap space to do much in free agency either..although their rookie cap looks to be under $6M, so they have about $18M if they want to use it.
The compensatory system is a complete joke. Despite the aim, it actually helps the best teams in the league by a matter of practice. It is long overdue for a change / removal.
It also rewards the teams that can't handle their cap situation...They can't replace the players they lose, so they give them cheap alternatives in the form of extra draft picks. It's all part of the parity plan. Though, without doing a study how many comp picks have ever helped a team in reality? James Connor and Dak Prescott are the ones I see recently..
But doesn’t the comp system work a year late? I was thinking that they wouldn’t get a 3rd in the same year they signed Suh and Robey-Coleman. Or was Trumaine that impactful in the calculation because of his big Jets contract? I’m tripping here maybe.
The league decided to count Mike Wallace as a gain despite the Eagles apparently trying to game the compensation formula. Even the teams don't know WTF is on with this secret formula. The bribe probably got lost in the mail.
It's interesting to get a look at this kind of thing from a guy like Gil. Everybody that is into the draft heavily has data sets like this that they reference, so it makes for a revealing comparison between someone that has done this at a high level and someone that is making their own way at it.
And Gil has been at this since before I was a twinkle in my fathers eye. So he’s got to be a top 3 man alive I’d kill to have a beer or two with.
Kyler Murray measures in at 5' 10 1/8" . Here's to all the "experts" who said, "I've stood next to him, and he can't be 5' 10" "... The dumb ****'s allowed to spew nonsense all over the airwaves... Between that and the NBA "drama", I just come here for all my sports talk. I don't turn on the radio, don't tune into the television shows; I'm totally done. This is huge for Murray, though.
The Mike and Mike show was my connection to the talking head world. When they split up, that show plummeted, and I cut my ties. It's all complete garbage, out there. The Dan LeBatard show is an exception, though we get it in the middle of my work day, so I rarely tune in. But they do a good job of mixing serious sports talk with just entertainment - and there's no trying to disguise the entertainment part as sports talk. I enjoy that show.
Ok... Took a few days off from the forum and took in the combine (just needed a breather). Here's some quick thoughts so far - I'm pretty disappointed in the running back class. The players with upside in creativity show little is movement ability which makes for a flat combination. Elijah Holyfield would have to have a mammoth pro day to recover his score and David Montgomery may simply be a really good college back with limited pro upside. Justice Hill impressed and Alex Barnes will need a heavy review of his tape. Couple players with explosion and some pro days to take in but there may not be a first round back in this class within our scoring (both Alabama backs will likely be considered). Kyler Murray came in about 1/4" less than my best guess but 10 pounds over. When he checks in at his pro day I'm betting he weighs closer to 200 than 207, but any size concerns have evaporated. Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Gardner Minshew all showed a little better in drill work than I might have anticipated. Dwayne Haskins was right about what you would expect from him. McSorely needs to find a team that is willing to let him play quarterback and gadget him out on offense. Give him a couple years to become a little more competent as a passer but plan on utilizing his abilities from the time you roster him. Kelvin Harmon needs to have a strong pro day to bounce back but his athletic profile is going to hurt him within my scoring. I wanted to see sub 4.6 and some solid explosion numbers. D.K. Metcalf pretty much confirmed my suspicions on his inability to create separation through horizontal movement. He's going to be a player that needs a lot of work in short area quickness to develop a full route tree. Metcalf will be heavily situation dependent to start his career. Both Andy Isabella and Hunter Renfrow have potential to be slot receiving demons. One difference between the two right now would be that Renfrow has the kind of speed that will automatically pace him in routes where Isabella will have to pace himself by restricting speed (a non-issue, just an observation). The biggest difference and likely the reason that Andy will have more immediate and long term success is their burst off of the line. Isabella dominates in that regard. Irv Smith's athletic profile is going to drop him below T.J. Hockenson, and it may drop him below Noah Fant. Keenan Brown, Khalale Wharring and Foster Moreau all put up numbers that show they have upside as professionals. Dax Raymond, Dawson Knox and Josh Oliver all put in work enough that they should move up a lot of boards. All in all this is proving to be a really solid class at TE. Got a lot more thoughts to mow through over the next couple days but I've seen some of those names mentioned so I wanted to get this out before it slipped my mind.
No doubt on Holyfield....he lost the combine but I still like his film....maybe he’s a gamer. I thought Barnes looked great and catches the ball w ease....he can be a 3 down RB and wasn’t burned up in college w only around 450 rushing attempts...TJ Hockenson is going to be a beast in both the run and the pass game
We used to get the Mike & Mike Show (and other ESPN shows after that) on radio here in Philly, but now that's been replaced by 97.5 The Fanatic, which is all-Philly sports all the time. Which wouldn't be so bad, except we ALREADY had an all-Philly sports station (WIP). So now it's all-Philly, and zero national sports.
Would LOVE to see Andy Isabella take over for Cole Beasley in Dallas. After running a 4.31 40, not sure he falls to the 90th pick overall...and 58 feels a little too rich.
