it's like the old NHL to only have 6 teams for decades. that's kind of lame to only beat 5 teams in the standings and 2 in the playoffs for the Stanley Cup.
Even if they moved to this era and became workout freaks it would not mean they could play in todays game. If all it took was training and diet there would be a ton football players than there are now.
Conversely, if you took one of today's players and put them in a past era, without today's rules and equipment or the ability to train 24/7/365, would they be as dominant?
Jean-when i see early 1970 football cards, im surprised how small the players are. from body size to arm and leg mass, they just seem like smaller guys and not that athletic.
i think so as they as bigger and faster. much like if you took today's Lebron James and put him in the NBA in 1985 - wow. he would take over the league. someone of his size who can shoot a 3, dominate around the perimeter and be hard to defend. he's a physical specimen. no way those 1980s guys were keeping up with him.
haha. i don't know about every one of them. i saw the 1970 EAGLES Team photo and my HS team was bigger and I graduated in 1990. haha.
? it's the same sport and same league, just different eras. Lebron and many of today's players are freaks of nature. much like any sports besides maybe baseball, put a fast skating wayne gretzky back in the 1960's with the slow drudgery of players and he dominates worse than he did in the 1980's.
We were discussing football players in today's NFL vs past eras in the NFL. You would agree that it takes a different type of athlete to excell in football than in basketball, no?
ok but i was talking about putting Lebron James back in the NBA say 1985. And for the record, Lebron was a stud HS TE and had offers to play division I and turned them down. Seeing how big is he and physical on a basketball court, i dont doubt he could hold his own on the gridiron.
Just like some from back then could play now some in todays nfl could play then. Some might actualky thrive going back. Hunes Ward knocked guys out in the modern NFL in a past NFL he could play even nastier. As for the past championships another thing to add into the conversation was the league was not as stable. I would have to loook it up again as to the exact number of years and percentages but i believe there were several years where nearly 50% of the teams were different from one year to the next. As dominate as the pats have been how much more dominate would they be if 40 to 50% of the teams were new over a 4 or 5 year period.
Agree on the 1st part. As to the 2nd part, the decade that had the highest team turnover was the 1930's due to the great recession.
Ah okay that makes way more sense hah. I consider them to be two difference dynasties because the 2001-2007 and 2010-2018 but there’s no specific term on what a sports dynasty is.
One more thing to consider when looking at NFL championships from prior to the Super Bowl era (again, I'm starting at 1937): From 1937 through 1946 teams only played 11 games per season (10 in 1943 and 1944 due to WWII). Only 2 teams made the playoffs. From 1947 through 1960 teams only played 12 games per season. Only 2 teams made the playoffs. From 1961 through 1966 teams only played 14 games per season. Only 2 teams made the playoffs. From 1967 through 1969 teams only played 14 games per season. Only 4 teams (2 NFC, 2 AFC) made the playoffs. From 1970 through 1977 teams still played only 14 games per season. Divisions within each conference were established, the Wild Card was initiated and 8 teams made the playoffs. From 1978 through 1989 teams played 16 games per season. 10 teams made the playoffs. From 1990 through present teams play 16 games per season and 12 teams make the playoffs ( 3 W/C 90 - 01, 4 W/C starting in 2002). I've seen it argued that, with fewer teams in the league, it was easier to make the playoffs prior to the Super Bowl era. I contend it was actually harder. When you are only playing 11 or 12 games a year, if you lose 3 or 4 of them, you are likely to not be in the playoff as one of those 2 teams. When you play 16 games a year, you have a little "wiggle room" to lose 3 or more games and still make the playoffs. Case in point. From 1975 to 2010, ten teams with 3 to 6 regular season loses made the playoffs as a wild card team and advanced all the way to the championship game (1975 DAL 10-4, 1980 OAK 11-5, 1985 NE 11-5, 1992 BUF 11-5, 1997 DEN 12-4, 1999 TEN 13-3, 2000 BAL 12-4, 2005 PIT 11-5, 2007 NYG 10-6 and 2010 GB 10-6). Of those 10 teams, 6 won the NFL Championship (two of those six had 6 regular season loses).
It appears the accepted practice is to go by decades. If that's the case, then the Patriots do, in fact, have the only two dynasties of this millennium.
Any way you define it - with what the NFL has initiated to achieve parody in the league - what the Patriots have accomplished is truely amazing.
Actually the USFL could've done well if it stayed in their lane and stuck with spring football. Trump turned it into a parody league by going head to head with nfls fall schedule, idiot.
