Here to tell you Raider fans complained about this for a long time. No they didn't call for the game to be replayed or decision overturned, at least not that I remember, but it took a long time for acceptance...Also 2001 was pre-social media as it is today. Sure there were chatrooms and message boards, but nowhere near what it is today

I still get my jimmies rustled about a crap no-call in 2003 in a Giants - 49ers playoff game. Every team has them and every team feels screwed about it. But you have to freaking move on. If the giants hand't blown a 24 point lead the missed call wouldn't have mattered. Plenty of other chances to win a game over 60 minutes.

 

Usually, for every blown call, if you honestly go back and review, you will find that your team blew a bunch of plays too. Some missed calls are so blatant and obvious you wonder how they missed it, but like stated earlier, life/shit happens and you deal with it, except it and move on. Some folks cant let it go, but the majority, I think, have seen this all before and just except its a human game played by humans being human.

Hey, if the Saints fans wanna get that non-call overturned so they can go to the Supe, tell 'em to get in line.

DEZ CAUGHT IT. There - now Dallas beats Green Bay, beats a Seattle team in the title game that they had stomped earlier in the year, and guaran-effing-tee it, Garrett doesn't pass on the 1 yard line in the Super Bowl, he's runs DeMarco Murray. Think mebbe Dallas should be discussed as SB XLIX champs.

 

I remember that game. Bad snap on a FG and the ball was thrown towards a lineman that was pulled down. Just went back and watched it, the lineman would've had to report as an eligible receiver so it should've been a PI call. I thought the OLineman was ineligible, and it was the right call but I guess not. Probably why the flag wasn't thrown, which to me sucks but is also completely understandable...It's one thing if it was a fake fg, but that was a botched play with bodies all mixed up and ref in the EZ just saw an ineligible number get knocked over...course if he throws the flag for ineligible man downfield someone could've corrected it in the ref huddle...

It was supposedly a rule in the book. How can you challenge a rule in the book. Raiders fans aren’t the brightest bulbs in the pack anyway.

 

One awful thing about the Tuck rule was that the world's worst announcer (Phil Simms) was the one guy who actually knew that there was an obscure rule that would have the Patriots keep the ball. That sealed his place as an "expert", with CBS continuing to force him on us as their #1 commentator ever since.

 

Roger Goodell: We’ll look at replay again, but it doesn’t cover judgment calls...



NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sounded skeptical at his press conference today about the possibility of expanding instant replay to allow it for penalties like pass interference.

Goodell said the league will consider how replay can be improved, but he doesn’t necessarily envision changes that would have made any difference for the missed call that went against the Saints in the NFC Championship Game.

“We will look again at instant replay,” Goodell said. “Should replay be expanded? It does not cover judgment calls. This was a judgment call. The other complication is this was a no-call, and our coaches and clubs have been very resistant, and there has not been support to date, of having a replay assistant or somebody in New York throw a flag when there has not been a flag on the field.”

But past resistance shouldn’t preclude improving officiating in the future. Patriots coach Bill Belichick has been a longtime advocate of allowing coaches to challenge any call they want to challenge, including penalties. There seems to be growing momentum for that, even if Goodell isn’t on board. (PFT)

Well Hell, If a crew in New York is not going to be set up to change a 'judgement' call or a non-call, this issue will never get resolved. I think Goodell is missing the point here and missing an opportunity to make the game better. If 7 guy's in zebra suits cant get the call right on the field, but a crew in NY can, whats the issue???

 

Plenty of raiders fans lost thier crap over it and still do to this day. As SK pointed out social media was not the beast that drove news reports back then as it does now. There will be many saints fans who never let it go just like many seahawks fans still whine about the superbowl. Heck John Madden, several raiders players and fans still have not gotten over the ruling on the immaculate reception.

 

Jerry Jones: Jason Garrett is not on shaky ground...



The Cowboys haven’t announced their coaching staff changes yet. Jon Kitna was hired more than a week ago presumably as the quarterbacks coach, and Kellen Moore is expected to get a promotion to offensive coordinator.

But the lack of an announcement has invited speculation about Jason Garrett’s job security.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, listening to the radio while sitting in traffic Wednesday, unexpectedly called into 105.3 The Fan to defend his coach after hearing the discussion.

“The reason that it’s not being talked about is not that Jason is on shaky ground,” Jones told the radio station of the Cowboys’ coaching changes. “. . .It’s just we’re putting together ides and didn’t want to necessarily make that a featured topic around the Super Bowl. Everything is as it should be.”

Garrett is 77-59 in the regular season and 2-3 in the postseason in his 8 1/2 seasons as the team’s head coach. The Cowboys have made the postseason three times in Garrett’s eight seasons as a full-time head coach.

Garrett has one year remaining on his contract and may or may not get an extension before the 2019 season. For now, a pat on the back from the owner will have to do.

“We’ve got a coach that basically now has a lot of experience,” Jones said. “We want to benefit from it. He is a great safety net for everything that we’re going to do with a young staff like we’ve got. I think we’re in an ideal position.”

Jones also praised Moore, who likely will call the team’s plays despite only one year of coaching experience.

“Jason’s going to be making an announcement here real quickly, but make no mistake about it, he’s going to be a key guy in what play is run on that football field,” Jones said. “By key, probably have the ultimate responsibility.”

Jones believes he has the staff in place to get it done, even if Cowboys fans — who haven’t even seen their team in the NFC Championship Game in 23 years — are skeptical. Jones makes it clear he wants to win as much, or more, than the most diehard supporter.

“There’s been some speculation that possibly I’m a little satisfied with going down to these Super Bowls without having my team with me, which I’m not,” Jones said. “There is absolutely a complete commitment.” (PFT)

Zach Strief played for the Saints from 2006 to 2017 and then became the Saints’ radio announcer in 2018. He knows the players on the Saints well. And Strief says he knows something NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday wasn’t true.

Goodell said that he talked to the players on the Saints about the missed call that went against them in the NFC Championship Game, but Strief says that isn’t so.

“We understand the frustration of the fans,” Goodell said. “I’ve talked to Coach Payton, the team, the players. We understand the frustration that they feel right now and we certainly want to address that.”

On WWL Radio, Strief said he has reached out to Saints players and they’ve told him Goodell hasn’t spoken to them since the NFC Championship Game. Strief said the two players Goodell would have been most likely to reach out to, Drew Brees and Ben Watson, both confirmed to him that Goodell didn’t talk to them. Strief said he does not believe any other player talked to Goodell either.

“The man literally stands up on a podium and just lies. It’s mind blowing. He is the commissioner of the biggest sports league in the country, and it is totally cool with all the people who employ him, the 32 owners, that he just lies to everybody,” Strief said.

Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas also said on Twitter that Goodell didn’t talk to the Saints. Goodell’s statement that he talked to Saints players came as news to Saints players. (PFT)

 

Yes, Raider fans lost their shit over the tuck rule call. The players for the most took it better than the Saints players have taken this one, though. Probably because it was technically the right call even if it was a dumb rule. The Pats actually had the tuck rule go against them in the game Bledsoe got knocked out that year, and it had been called in other games, too. It's not like the refs magicked the tuck rule into existence that day. Also, as Tim Brown sagely noted on the radio this morning, even if that play had been ruled a fumble and the Pats hadn't found some other way to come back and win, the Raiders still would've had to go to Pittsburgh and beat the Steelers before they could get to the SB the next week and that was no guarantee, either.

About the only real parallel between the Pats-Raiders tuck rule game and the Saints-Rams game is that the team that had the questionable officiating go against them in both instances had the lead inside of two minutes after the call/non-call and still lost the game.

 

i'll give you the catch but i can't give you 2 more wins. dez got hosed, but you gotta play out the games. haha.

 

saints got hosed. no denying that but they also blew a 13-0 lead. that's not on the refs. time to move on.

 

Way their O-line was playing, they would have run Murray 50 times.
