MTV didn't kill hair bands. their lack of writing big hits did. Many had 2 or 3 hits tops. Bon Jovi was a huge success and had many hits, so MTV didnt hurt their careers. GNR was hurt by the unpredictability and craziness of Axle Rose. the 90's came and they were still big. Poison, RATT, Cinderella, Motley Crue etc started to die down a little. then grunge came. Soundgarden and AIC did grunge bf Nirvana but didn't have the following they had or the big MTV videos. Then Nirvana did unplugged which showed a different side to them and Cobain and that made them more famous. Pearl Jam's debut album was huge on college campus'. Kids couldn't get enough of them. They were bigger than all these bands except Bon Jovi. Pearl Jam is still around today. Not too shabby.
