They can now choose between Howard, Quick or Bobrovsky. You need two goalies, simply to say that Hart is your future and leave it at that won't do. Every player has to prove themselves at the pro level before they're given titles and entitlements.
I feel the leafs caved in on the nylander signing, rewarding a player for scoring 20 goals and getting 61 pts for playing along side Matthews smelled funny.
Carter Hart didn't dominate in the ahl, he doesn't earn any right to be called the future. You should always have competition and depth.
Case in point with vancouver, they traded luongo for Markstrom and it didn't end there, they then went on to develop thatcher demko, and now he's 23 after developing years in Utica. They still went out to get more depth with michael dipietro (OHL player of the year).
Despite the sabres having Ullmark ready to go, they still went out to acquire carter hutton. This was a smart move as not to leave ullmark vulnerable to pressure being a young goalie. They also drafted UPL to add even more depth.
The flyers have now had a 30 year history with solidifying the goalie position. A change in philsophy is needed at the top. They have to think 3 goalies deep at all times.

I don't think those teams from the 70s feared them as much as they knew they would have to be fighting more than the usual. This would throw teams off their game as they would often have to get their skilled players to fight, whereas philly had more depth in the goon dept.

wait 1 minute. patrick roy was called up the year he won the cup. so was dryden. so was matt murray. who did they beat out ? what did they prove BEFORE they got the job ? zilch ! Injuries and other reasons were why they got the call. in hart's case - all the other goalies suck ass. he was drafted high, so he better be the freaking future !

hart dominated the WHL league twice. set or broke or records that will be hard to beat. won the mvp of the league once or twice as a goalie. i think he proved his worth skinny. the ahl to me doesn't mean shit. it's not the elite. it's like AAA baseball for the guys who couldn't hack the major leagues. if Hart dominated Juniors, which he did, he is the freaking future !

and like i told Dan last month, i don't mind quick or Bob for a year, but not 3 yrs. Hart already said he doesn't want to wait 2-3 years to start again. i don't blame him. same thing happened to Bob. he played once a week, was cold, the team played like shit in front of him, his stats imploded and he wanted out. if they sign 1 or 2 goalies more than 1 year, Hart will bolt. Book it.

As much as I like Hart, and for as much promise that he has, there remains one FACT. He has proven absofuckinlutely NOTHING at the NHL level. He does not have the leverage - Philly does. He will probably be best served to have a backup role in 2019-20 with an expectation of 20-25 starts. The next year he might share the position with 35-45 starts. His timeline to be a starter may be 2021-22. If I were a fan I would not give a rat's ass if he liked that or not. No player is above the team. That time horizon is probably in the best interest of both the team and his best interest.

Yes Roy, Dryden, Murray and even tom brady were unproven when they stepped in. This is a gamble that occasionally pays off and gets remembered forever in the anals of hockey history. There's much more cases of good efforts that fell short and better luck next year.
Carter Hart could work out, but it's only smart to have depth, insurance and competiton, where there's a fight for the #1 spot.
Having two or three stellar goalies is an ideal place to be. Look at the jets with hellebuyck and brossoit, or the preds with rinne and saros. Even the Bs don't look too bad with Halak backing up.

but unless they sign 2 of them or both hart and junior prospect felix sandstrom, work out, asking for 2-3 stellar goalies in philly is asking a lot. you may have to jump the gun on them. hell they already are with hart starting now.

That's why you sign a veteren, you add depth and it's really good insurance.

Carter Hart is getting entry level coin until the summer of 2021, lots of flexibility.

i pray he works out. would be nice to have a main goalie you can count on in net. haven't one since hextall in 87 and the late Pelle Lindbergh from 83-85.

They're showing the Preds/Hawks game here. I get the pleasure of watching burke claim that the preds are miles better than the jets and vegas. Ah, but I can always hit a bar, yeah, I could use a drink.
