Can you imagine if a player today's NFL, hit a QB like the way Leonard Marshall hit Montana in that playoff game? He'd probably get suspended for the rest of the season, if not tossed from the league altogether....

Bears defense the year after their SB victory was nearly just as great as the team that won it. In some ways they were statistically better.Poor QB play really doomed that team.

In 13 of their 16 regular season games the 1986 Bears gave up 14 points or fewer.

The 86 Bears defense actually gave up 11 total fewer points than the 85 team. But the team also scored less than 100 than the previous season. And they lost to the Redskins 27-13 in their only playoff game. After Willie Gault's 50 yard score to tie it in the 2nd quarter the offense did absolutely nothing the rest of the game.

Had the Bears had a capable QB playing for them...I know they beat the Redskins. And not saying they'd beat the Giants because the Giants were legit....but I'd love to see that game.

I don't know much of what happened to the '87 Giants after their SB win.

They started out looking pretty bad, then a couple weeks into the season the league's regular players went on strike and their replacement team didn't look good either.

They lost 6 out of their first 7 games.

meh, Bears didn't have near the same mojo in 86.

No team will ever have the same mojo and swagger as the 85 Bears.

odd that 1985 Bears QB Jim McMahon was a solid to pretty good college QB, who broke or set many records. Had a good run in the NFL for the Bears and kind of decline rapidly after 86. I know now he's sick with memory loss and other ailments. I figured with that 85 Def the Bears would be in the SB for years to come. Sadly it wasn't meant to be and LT and the G-men took over for a little while. SF then made another SB run in 88-89 and the Bears being elite were no more.

Buddy Ryan turned Philly into the elite defense of the NFL...

i know that. sadly they had Randall Cunningham and not much else on offense. Mike Quick was too old and Keith Jackson was a good TE but had no help. They lost to the old LA Rams at the Vet and Jim Everett in one playoff game and to the Bears in the fog bowl another time. Ryan just never had a good offense. I think the 91 or 92 def was #1 against the run and pass. some crazy stat like that.

Bad QB play and poor team management from the top ruined the Bears chances at ever going back to the SB.

Mike McCaskey wanted to run the show but the problem was he sucked at running the show. That led to a slow dismantling of that team...Ditka's eventual firing...and the 90s Bears being awful for much of the decade into the 2000s.

Clyde Simmons is our current defensive line coach. They were menacing. QB's didn't wanna face Reggie White and that Philly front. SO aggressive. That was fun football to watch IMO. I don't have to see shootouts every week to be entertained.

I'll take a low scoring defensive battle over a high scoring shootout every day of the week.

Give me great open field tackles, hard clean hits, QB pressures, run stuffs, and gang tackles that don't stop just because the whistle did and I'm a very happy person.

My favorite thing from those 80's era football memories was watching Hanford Dixon and Frank Minniefield, with that "in your face" style press bump and run. Those two would shut down passing games like no one has ever seen. They were hitters too.

A couple bad dudes right there...Opposing QB's hated them. Too bad they couldn't cover for like 20 seconds while we chased Elway all over the field. smh...

  15. I've gone back and forth on this one a lot, and I'm gonna change my pick to the Los Angeles Chargers taking it instead.

there's always a Wild Card game that is low scoring. Happens every few years. I'm waiting for one this weekend.

    That takes me back.

Loved watching the George Allan Rams play the Bud Grant Vikings. That was football.

I can remember some of those battles between Fran Tarkenton and Pat Haden. The epic battle in the mud really stands out.... Similar to the Steelers and Raiders in the 70's, it seemed like Vikings and Rams met in playoffs every year back then.

I was a Rams fan back then. I hated both the Vikings and the Cowboys. The Rams would make the playoff and either one or both of those teams were standing in our way. If we could beat one, we could never seem to beat the other. The Rams did it once, then ran into Terry Bradshaw's Steelers in the Super Bowl. It didn't end well.
