One thing you may be overlooking. The only reason Williams was the interim head coach to begin with was because of dischord within the coaching staff. Williams is a known evil. They already know how the staff works together as it is currently configured. IMO, the most significant change was naming Kitchens as the OC. There is no doubt in my mind that both Williams and Arians would keep that intact.
I don't think anyone in the world ever would have believed that Williams would be a potential HC candidate in the NFL. Heck, I think many people believed he'd never be hired period by a NFL team again! That being said, if he's not the HC, I can't see him being on staff the next season. These coaches have such big egos, how can you go from being the man in charge back to a coordinator position on the same team? Then if say Kitchens was tabbed as HC, Williams would then be working for the man who was previously working for him. If I was betting, I'd say Williams is either HC or off the team next year.
He still has a resume that should be considered beyond any success that was had in the 2018 season. They were likely a 4-5 win team with Hue running the show (or had the potential to be given that circumstance). A 7 win team under Gregg is commendable, but it didn't come without warts and it shouldn't overshadow what the future potential could be under a different leader. Arians would probably be a quality hire, but I still lean towards rolling with Freddie at the moment. This is all really early (frickin' season ended yesterday, lol) so my thoughts on it are going to change and get more developed as I get locked into the off-season, but this is my earliest opinion on it and I'm willing to share it for the sake of conversation.
You think Williams has forgotten his own history? He has to be fully aware that his opportunities in the NFL will be limited. Cleveland gave him the opportunity to function as a head coach (albeit on an interim basis). If there's only one thing I've learned about him during his tenure with Cleveland, it's that he's loyal to an organization.
Another name I would immediately consider for Cleveland is Dan Roushar. He's probably not going to get a lot of run but someone willing to take a chance on a guy with a well rounded resume may end up with a very solid head coach. I wouldn't mind seeing him linked to Miami or Arizona as well. Since I'm throwing out early potentials - I'd like to see Eric Bieniemy end up in New York to work with Darnold and company. And I wouldn't mind seeing Robert Saleh get an opportunity to interview with the Broncos.
We'll save that for another day. The Browns had way to good of a season for any of my detailed pettiness to put a shadow on it one day after the regular season closes.
LOL Better give me a couple extra. This is when things really start getting interesting around the office. I've been waiting 17 damn weeks for the regular season to get out of the way so I can start laser focusing on the upcoming off-season. As soon as I'm settled in and rolling the opinions that get me high quality hate mail will start pouring out.
Sounds like another hat has been thrown into the ring for the Browns' HC job . . . Mike Munchak. Given our current offensive personnel, I could get on board with this one as well.
Since we are all just throwing out opinions here...I have one...as always. I believe in Dorsey doing the right thing for this team in getting HIS man that he feels will improve the position of Head Coach. I like he dynamic going on, but honestly, I don't have 100% faith in Gregg yet. If Dorsey does his evaluation and likes what he sees, I'm ready to roll with him. Now, for that opinion I was telling you all about earlier in the post. Lym, I love ya man, but I think you are only slightly off on your take above. The most significant change was drafting Baker Mayfield, the second most significant occurrence was Tyrod getting injured, allowing Baker to get in the game. The Browns improved on the season because Baker was learning on the fly. As his recognition of defenses improved, so did the offense. Baker needed someone to stay out of the way of his learning, Freddie was eager to oblige. Don't take this the wrong way, I think Freddie put them in more positive situations than not, simply by running a simplified offense. As the season wore on, you could see Baker making more and more adjustments at the line. This will only get more pronounced with every game he plays and more film to breakdown. At this point, we are all along for the ride. The only thing that can mess this up is if Dorsey picks a guy who goes on a power trip and stunts the growth of Baker being Baker, and that is learning and adjusting in his own mind. Todd Haley was just that sort of ego maniac...that stereotype must be avoided. You don't need to build an offense for Baker, you need to stay out of his way and learn FROM him in order to keep the game flowing with him running the show. There, I said it... Baker is a one of a kind...he's a Manning, Brady, Favre, Brees...He's going to make everyone on offense better moving forward. Dorsey can start focusing on defense in the draft and let Baker mold the offense.
It's a phuqing joke that it took that... There is really only one reason we aren't in the playoffs right now.....Jimmy Haslam wanted to hold on to Hue. That's it. Without that stupidity from our owner, we are in the tournament this year.... also JFTR - Hue refused to even consider the possibility of starting Baker week one....That's why Mayfield is NEVER gonna let him forget it.
I really do trust John Dorsey in this coaching search, and I'm almost certain that it won't be Gregg Williams....No knock on the man. He did a great job filling in. I just don't think that's our direction... Just a gut feel, but I'd be surprised if our new HC hire is over 50....
I think this would make a real solid coaching staff, especially from an offensive perspective, assuming Bruce is 100% committed and not halfway retired; HC- Bruce Arians OC- Freddie Kitchens DC- Kris Richard QB's- Byron Leftwich IMO, Gregg Williams did a solid job, but it wasn't enough. He REALLY needed that Baltimore game, to have a legit shot. Failing to challenge the critical spot call late in the game where replay showed that Lamar Jackson clearly had come up short, was a death blow for Gregg's chances. I honestly don't know how the hell he didn't challenge that spot. It would have forced a 4th down decision from Baltimore, at THE most critical time of the game. That was a huge fail on the part of Williams...No excuse. Kris Richard is one of my favorite young coaches in this league. Great communicator. Doesn't play favorites. I'd be fine with him as HC candidate as well.(and it'll probably take just that). Rumor has it that both the Jets and Dolphins have interest, and it wouldn't be a surprise if his name surfaced on other "short lists" as well....
lol! Could the Bengals really do that at this point? I can't imagine... How could they justify that to their fan base? It certainly would be "popcorn worthy" entertainment.....
I just want to make sure I understand your post . . . You're advocating replacing 2 out the 3 major coaching positions because of one decision on one play in one game? Never mind that it was important only because of where the team was (record wise on the year) due to the job that the coaching staff did with this team in the second half of the season. Never mind that, given the way the Ravens were running the ball all game long, even if he challenged the spot and won forcing them to go for it on 4th down - they more than likely would have made the 1st down anyway had they elected to go for it.
lol! Uhm No. Sorry if that's the impression I gave, but I do think that fail really stands out. And let's not forget, that was Gregg's defense getting steamrolled the entire game. I've said all along that Williams had to win-out, and finish above .500, to be seriously considered. He didn't. That list was just some of my preferences for Cleveland coaching jobs. The Browns "sounded the horn" before the game when they made it a point to make the statement that basically claimed they aren't committed to anyone on the current staff. It's just my opinion...I think Dorsey has no intention of hiring Gregg Williams to be HC. I think he'll go with a younger guy....I do believe Freddie is in the plans. FWIW; I don't think it'll be Arians either, he's just a coach I've always liked.. He's not a younger guy. To my knowledge, he hasn't even gotten an interview. Although, I'm not sure if teams are obligated to release that info.
Second time you said this in just a few posts... Then you state this: Not calling you out, just bustin your balls...
