Seven playoff teams missed 2017 postseason...

The NFL is unpredictable. What we think we know on Labor Day leaves us wondering what we were thinking by New Year’s. It happens every year.

Seven of the 12 teams that qualified for the postseason were home for the postseason a year ago.

The Ravens, Bears, Cowboys, Texans, Chargers, Seahawks and Colts didn’t make the playoffs a year ago. Those seven teams combined for a 49-63 record a year ago. They are 75-37 this season.

The Patriots, Rams, Eagles, Chiefs and Saints are the only teams to repeat with playoff berths.

Since 1990 — a streak of 29 consecutive seasons — at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs that were not in the postseason the previous year.

In 15 of the past 16 seasons at least one team has finished in first place in its division the season after finishing in last or tied for last place.

Chicago and Houston accomplished the “worst-to-first” turnaround this season, which marks the second consecutive season that two teams have accomplished the feat. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the NHL, MLB or NBA have never had multiple teams go “worst to first” in their divisions in consecutive seasons. (PFT)

Local news this morning reported that John Dorsey will announce the Browns' head coach this morning. That timing (if true) narrows down the suspects

    McCarthy?

Greg Williams did a stand up job in the interim, but with McCarthy out there.... still like what Williams has done with your team.

  6. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

Turned out not to be true. He did have a presser at 9:00 but the first words out of his mouth were that he was only going to discuss his process . . . not individual candidates.

IMHO there are only three prior NFL head coaches out there that Dorsey is considering:
    • Gregg Williams. Can't ignore what he did with the same roster.
    • Bruce Arians. Almost assuredly will retain Kitchens as OC and could retain Williams as DC. Continuity counts a lot.
    • Mike McCarthy. There are some pretty strong ties between Dorsey and McCarthy. (This is the least attractive one to me.)

I really don't want McCarthy. I think that would be detrimental to Mayfields growth. I don't see McCarthy/Kitchens marriage going so well.

Good for Mayock, bad for all of us. It will be painful to sit through NFL-N's draft broadcast without him, and it's already painful to think that we won't have a better alternative than Kiper/McShay on BSPN.

Yeah, Mayock was the only guy on the major networks calling the draft that I ever bothered listening to. Now that he's gone, I'll just read the recaps, or keep the trade updater up while it's happening. Unfortunate, for us. But it sure as hell is going to be interesting seeing how it all goes down, him being the GM.

Because Gruden needs someone to blame for future bad decisions?

More like Chucky has "complete" control of the Raiders at this time. Mayock and Chucky are really close friends and with Mike's eye for talent checking Chucky's passion for coaching, this combination could be deadly for the AFC West in coming seasons. The question is will they be given the time needed to overhaul that operation into their vision of football as we know that the NFL fires coaches far too quickly in this day and age.

You think Gruden still has the ability to be a winning coach in the NFL? Gotta be honest, I haven't seen that as being the case since prior to his hire. I think this winds up a colossal mistake for the Raiders, though we've got 9 years to see if I'm wrong...

I didn’t think he was that great of a coach the first time around. Certainly not sold on him at the moment.

  17. Kyreal Franchise Player Ravens

I think he has passion for coaching. Do I think he will succeed? That remains to be seen. The Raiders have always been known to go off the beaten path and usually have come up Aces in those times, although in this case, it can go either way. I know the Raiders have blown up their team for sure. Gruden wants his players here not the previous regime group. Will he be given the time needed to complete such an overhaul? That's the big question. He will definitely need to show improvement in the win column in 2019, of that there is no doubts. The AFC West is a no joke division, results will be needed, hence why the big question is, will he be given the necessary time to achieve his vision.
