Will-all we get here is a feeding from Philly NBC Sportsnet.com, Comcast Sports Cable, Philly Rumors etc is the Phils are getting Machado and Harper. they are all 0-1 on Corbin already. it's every day they post something on facebook about the phils landing this guy or this guy or want no lie at one point 15 top FAs! the fans just laugh at the posts, but for all the talk of "spending silly money," they haven't spend a dime! segura was a trade and by getting rid of Santana they shed salary, so where is the spending? now the rumor is they want Kuechel or however you spell his name. sure, so does everyone else. happ wants 3 yrs. fine, give it to him. stop waiting for someone else, like the Nats and Corbin to beat you to the punch. As for Yankees, Stanton was bad enough, but Harper or Machado and now a Trade for Thor would really put a damper of my love of baseball. MLB is getting like the NBA and only 2-3 teams can win the WS. It's buy and buy more and win. The Phils could be guilty of that if they spend the way they promised too. it's baseball economics now. just not for me. i still don't get the damn luxury tax and how the yankees get stanton and were under the tax. damn!
PHILS SIGN ANDREW MCCUTCHEN 3 YEARS $50 MILLION. My buddy loves the deal. To me, Happ wants a 3 yr deal and he will sign. You just gave it to McCutchen when you didn't have too. He wasn't on demand like Happ and the pitchers are. Unless they get Happ or Keuchel, this is a bad move. Yes, their outfield stinks and AM will help and this is an upgrade, but not over not getting Happ or Keuchel, let alone Harper or Machado !
yee that's a lot for Cutch at this point in his career I wouldn't panic too much yet on the pitchers. I'm sure the agents are busy pitting teams against one another for Happ and Keuchel now that Corbin's off the market.
As of last night the Phils and Happ were "close" on a deal. heard it's 2 yrs but so front loaded with money he won't need a 3rd year.
Phils had an ugly OF before this trade. Hoskins is back at 1b thank God, so that alone is an upgrade. AM in the OF is a good move too for defensive purposes. if Roman Quinn can stay healthy, the guy is so fast, he can cover more than his position! Not tooting his horn, but the kid has massive speed and range.
Source: White Sox to get Alonso from Tribe Veteran is Machado's brother-in-law; expected to split time between first base, DH CHICAGO -- A few days before premium free agent Manny Machado reportedly will be visiting with the White Sox, the team enhanced its recruitment process by adding his brother-in-law via trade. Yonder Alonso was acquired from Cleveland on Friday night in exchange for Minor League outfielder Alex Call, a source confirmed to MLB.com. Alonso has an $8 million salary for 2019 and a $9 million option for '20 with a $1 million buyout. The club is expected to officially announce the deal on Saturday morning.
He’ll have to take a backloaded deal if they want to stay under the tax but the decks look pretty clear for him to land there now.
i still don't get how the yankees with stanton are under the tax and word is come jan 2019 they are getting machado. that's $240 for stanton and $300+ for manny. how can they be under the tax ??
We’ve covered this. The tax threshhold this year was $197M. Stanton counts 25 of that. That leaves 172 for everyone else and they got a ton of contributions from cheap pre-arb players...Judge, Severino, Torres, Andujar, Sanchez...those 5 guys cost less than 3. Combined. And they were finally out from under ARod’s money this year. They came in at 192. They’re projected at about 180 for 2019 with the threshold rising to 206...they can easily afford Machado and still stay under the CBT.
u dog - how does stanton only count for $25mil when his contract is $240+ ? is it yearly, so $25 mil a year ? yeah we covered it and i still don't get it. im not a wiz like you u dog. i bet 99% of baseball fans don't get it. im shocked in past years they and the red sox had to pay fines for going over when they apparently find ways and salaries to be under.
harper and machado don't like philaelphia and don't wanna play in philly. great, who does? what ever happened to money? shoot me now. phils won't pay 5 years for dallas keuchal. great. shoot me now. he's not worth 5 yrs but they need pitching. corbin isn't worth 6 years, but that is what the going rate is. spend it. they need arms before aaron nola's arm falls off. all this talk of spending "stupid money" and they spend it on mccutchen and no one else. they passed on happ, miller and corbin for not wanting to spend money on the extra year of their deals they required. phillies fans don't forget shit like this, so kiss away the fan base come 2019 if they don't land harper or machado. segura and mccutchen aren't enough to bring the fans back to the stadium.
no. they get a bad rap. and for $300 mil - do they really care that much about the fans? i mean harper called rhys hoskins a month ago. what did they talk about the cheesesteaks? do the fans really deter you from signing a $300 million dollar deal ? mess up and they will boo you. so what? boo freaking hoo. pretty weak ass shit if they don't come because of the fans.
arrieta is a boras client and the phils have him. to me just end this nonsense and see what kind of deal he wants. to tell your fanbase we are spending "stupid money" and then not offer extra years for happ, corbin and keuchal is not smart. smart from a business perspective, yes, but the fans won't come to the stadium in 2019. they want to win and see the big star players. in my book every pro athlete is overpaid, so what is 1 more year ? the phils have tons of open money and little on the books. would 1 more year of corbin or keuchal be so bad vs a WS Title ? No!
Philly just isn't an attractive city to a lot of players. Not sure why. But when you add in the media, the fans, and the coach coaching the team....I think a lot of free agents will see other destinations as being much more attractive.
