The race for first overall goal scorer.

    Gretzky 894 goals

OV 635 goals 33 years old

If Ov plays until 40 he would have to average 37 goals a year.

He won't play until he's 40 and he won't average 37 goals/year. The Great zone is safe; that is until McJesus starts stacking multiple scoring titles and we speculate about what it'll take for him to surpass Gretzky.

It's really tough in todays nhl, gretzky had it much easier in the 80s. If he averages, let's say 46 goals a year through the next four years, then he would only need to get 25 goals for his last three years. If he remains determined to pass gretzky, the caps might even let him on the roster until he's 42.

I maintain that the Russian will not surpass Gretzky. It's just too hard.

Odds are against it, he could easily develop some knee or shoulder issues in a couple of years and retire.

Their Goals scored per game are almost identical .60 for Gretzky and .61 for Ovechkin. Ovechkin goals per game over the last two years is .68 with an insane .90 so far this season.

One of the stats I always considered wild about Gretzky is that if you took away his goals and only counted his assists he would still be the all time points leader.

You look at the goalies that Gretzky faced and now look at a guy like Vasilevsky. The difference is stunning.

Gretzky could only play the guys that were there at the time. I think Gretzky would still dominate in todays NHL just as he did during his playing time.

He would dominate, but his 212 pt season would probably be more like 140 today.

140 today would be a lot. i think he would find ways to be better. he was always defying the odds his whole life and playing against kids older and bigger than he was etc. same as the NHL and he beat them too. if he played today, he would be smarter and still dominate. he never knew how to fail and not succeed.

Straight out question, put Gretzky in Mcdavids shoes of today, how many more points do you think he could get?
    Same age.

I think they'd be close to even if they played on the same era and if they had a similar quality of team/linemates.

so Dan, did his teammates make him that much better or did Gretzky make them that much better ? give me Messier, Anderson, Kurri and Coffey and I would be pretty good too. If McDavid had any real help, he would be that much more dangerous, but Gretzky is still the greatest ever regardless of teammates and eras.

I’m seeing a new (weird) ad format on the iPhone. Noticed a McDonald’s ad in the “listing” of topics. To the implementation team: THANKS! I HATE IT!
