I always thought it was considered a mild pejorative word meaning "Canadian". I remember being told on my first visit across the border to not call the locals Canucks.

I think the real answer is somewhat different; but it stuck with me that it was a dirty word.

I thought johnny canuck was just a nickname americans gave canadians during civil war time.

"Canuck" /kəˈnʌk/ is a slang term for a Canadian. The origins of the word are uncertain.[1] The term "Kanuck" is first recorded in 1835 as an Americanism (American term), originally referring to Dutch Canadians or French Canadians.[1][2] By the 1850s, the spelling with a "C" became predominant.[1] Today, English Canadians and others use "Canuck" as a term for any Canadian.[1][3]

my buddy would get all drunk in a bar and tell this bad joke. "what is a canuck?" it's the sound of the puck going off the boards - canuck ! haha

  7. ......The American soldiers fighting the British in the war of 1812 referred to the Canadian Native Indians who had joined forces with the British to fight the American's........they gave them a Derogatory Nickname.

    "Canucks"

So it was a pejorative. Do Canadians still view it as a derisive term? If so, why did Vancouver select this name?

As for a question; the Minnesota North Stars had an important impact on two NHL franchises, both of whom had roots in the CA Bay Area.

What were the two franchises, and how did the North Stars play an important role in their franchise histories?

The canooks, though BC didn't have a part in the 1812 war.

Good question, no, I don't think any canadians would be offended, hosers is probably a more popular term amongst americans.

they were part of the expansion with the oakland and la teams as well as others. their first home game was vs the california golden seals where bill masterton fell and hit his head on the ice and died days later.

their former owners bought interest in the SJ SHarks when they became a new team.

later on with the North Stars going to be defunct, they were going to be the new Anaheim team with a Stars former owner, but Disney got the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as a new expansion team. The Stars moved to Dallas instead.

    or something like that....?

Cat, too many inaccuracies here to give you full credit. But, you are on the right track.

(Hint: being one of the six expansion teams with the Seals is not a strong enough connection. This directly relates to those two franchises and no other team.)

(Hint 2: What is the full history of the California/Oakland franchise?)

Well said Skinny.........NO, Dan is the Answer.........and British Columbia was not even a province in 1812.

I think "hoser" became part of the parlance much later than Canuck. I think there may have been a Cheech and Chong skit, but like any C&C skit, I could be completely f^€£'d up.

I don't think of hosers as an American term really. Instead, I kind of think of it as a Canadian equivalent of the Aussie "mates". But, "hoser" is more likely to be used when someone is drunk compared to "mate".

Yes Dan.......Because it means to get "Hosed".....(drunk)....it is a Canadian Term used by Canadians and derogatory term used by Tourist's.......

  17. skinny123 Guest

The term hoser was popularized by the SCTV characters of Bob and Doug Mackenzie, as brothers they played the stereotypical canadian hosers. Real hosers are usually found in the small rural towns in the northern parts where snow is plenty. There's not much to do but drink or smoke weed, and take in the winter activites, like ice fishing, snowmobiling and hockey. These people are usually stuck in a past time period and have a very simple lifestyle

I had these friends a while back that were in a band and their agent booked them to play bars in northern ontrario. They brought back these really crazy stories of loose women, drunk indians and 4 inch sheets of ice on their windshield, good luck scraping.
