I've always been fascinated by the evolution of language. I probably should have taken that in university as well. Evolutionary linguistics sounds so interesting doesn't it? How else to explain the fact that the English language evolved so much in spelling after the English settled in the United States.

 

im with you on that. an honor? how about a canadian delicacy? a cookie? a date with babyfan? something for the champion ?

 

i see this more and more. honour. neighbourhood. flavour, etc. even on spell check it's wrong. it's honor. neighborhood and flavor or cross the border and sing "Oh Canada." lol

Actually it's not Cat. Think about where your language comes from ... The British colonization of America happened in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia. The Pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts, arrived in 1620. In both Virginia and Massachusetts, the colonists flourished with some assistance from Native Americans. The English language has evolved over the last 400 years into the language that you recognize and speak today. The English spelling of the words that you mentioned is from Britain and is recognized as the 'proper' spelling.

Also it's not, "Oh Canada". It's "O Canada".

Honor dates back to the 12th century. Sometimes spelled, depending on language and locality, as onor or onur or honor or honour from the latin honor or honorem. Sometimes honos in the Roman parts of the world.

Honor and honour were used almost equally up until mid to late 17th century when the Brits stuck with honour and folks settling the new lands just wrote honor.

And both are proper. So kiss my Murican ass.

 

recognized where as the proper spelling? in England? it's not in the US. Even my spellcheck doesn't recognize it as the right words and that's from Microsoft.

why growing up in my US school's was it honor, color, neighborhood and flavor ? i was a History Major BF, so I know the history, but until the last 18 yrs or so, it never popped up as flavour, colour, etc. it was always the other way. the way i grew up. so if im wrong, then so is every US school then for teaching us the wrong spelling.

and England has different meanings and words from ours in the US. A rubber to them is an eraser, not a condom. Chips is not a potato chip, but a french fry. To me it's two different countries with their own way of spelling words. it's not universally accepted as many people do not add the "U" to the word.

As for "O Canada," that's the best part about Canada! haha.

 

Changing the spelling was part of the way to show our superiority over the British. The world accepts our spelling as the standard not the British. The alpha dog gets the spelling rights. The Canadians couldn’t break away from Britain so they are still the Brits puppets.
