NFL fines Vontaze Burfict $112,000... The NFL has taken a lot of criticism for not suspending Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict after his cheap shots against the Steelers on Sunday. But the league sure did hit Burfict hard in the wallet. The league fined Burfict $112,000 for multiple violations on Sunday. Although the NFL did not break down how much Burfict was fined for each action, the league said he committed unnecessary roughness twice, once for a hit on Antonio Brown and once for a hit on James Conner. That raises the question, however, about why Burfict wasn’t suspended. He’s a repeat violator of the league’s player safety rules, and so far the NFL hasn’t been able to get through to him. Given his track record, this fine seems unlikely to do much either. (NBC's PFT)
Jets to cut Terrelle Pryor... Jets wide receiver Terrelle Pryor has caught a touchdown pass in two straight games, but he won’t be catching another touchdown pass soon. The Jets are releasing Pryor today, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The report is odd, saying that Pryor has a tear in his groin and will miss about two weeks, and the Jets are interested in bringing him back when he’s healthy. But if that’s the case, why cut him now? Why not just deactivate him for the next two weeks, then make him active on Sundays again when he’s ready to play? Players suffer two-week injuries all the time. That’s why the NFL allows teams to keep 53 players on the roster, even though only 46 are active for games. Pryor signed a one-year contract with the Jets this year. He has already received a $1 million signing bonus and more than $1 million in base salary. He has 14 catches for 235 yards this season. INJURIES... Good news for the Chicago Bears. Bad news for Tom Brady. Linebacker Khalil Mack is expected to play Sunday against the New England Patriots, sources told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Mack was limited all week with a sprained ankle. He suffered the injury in their Week 6 loss to the Dolphins but played through it. There is less certainty about Allen Robinson. The wide receiver is considered a game-time decision because of a groin injury, but there is optimism that he'll play provided everything goes well in pregame workouts, Rapoport reported. Here are other injuries we're monitoring heading into kickoff for Week 7, per Ian Rapoport: 1. Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, whose back locked up in practice Friday, is not expected to play Sunday. But the belief is he did not suffer a long-term injury, nor one that will keep him out long. Running back Sony Michel (knee) and wideouts Julian Edelman (heel) and Josh Gordon (hamstring) are all expected to play. 2. Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon (hamstring) was added to the injury report Saturday following the long flight to London and was listed as inactive for the game Sunday. Wideout Travis Benjamin (foot) is active for the contest after heading into Sunday as a game-time decision. Kicker Caleb Sturgis (quad) is inactive for the game. 3. New York Jets running back Isaiah Crowell (foot) is expected to play against the Minnesota Vikings. He was listed as questionable. 4. Washington Redskins running back Adrian Peterson (shoulder/ankle) is expected to play but it sounds like running back Chris Thompson (rib/knee) will not be able to. 5. San Francisco 49ers wideout Pierre Garcon (shoulder/knee) is expected to play, as are cornerbacks K'Waun Williams (shoulder) and Ahkello Witherspoon (concussion). Cornerback Richard Sherman (calf) is a game-time decision. 6. Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake (knee), who has missed a couple games after a meniscus trim, is looking good to play Sunday vs. the Detroit Lions. 7. Tennessee Titans safety Kenny Vaccaro (elbow) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Chargers in London. (NFL.com)
After further review... the only good thing about football in England is the start time, I get a quadrupleheader. Other than that I cant think of anything good about it.
I don't get it on Pryor. If he's hurt, wouldn't there have to be an injury settlement to release him? And wouldn't that make him unavailable to that team for six weeks beyond the length of the settlement? Something seems wrong with the story.
It is very fishy to me also. Not sure I buy the reasoning, but it seems they just want to off him asap and I don't know why.
