BROWNS @ BUCCANEERS - Week 7

Since no one has started one yet...

Good chance for Genard Avery to get some playing time. Unfortunately, he's at WILL, so we're stuck with low-energy Jamie Collins at SAM for at least another game.

I saw where the Browns brought NaVorro Bowman in for a workout this week, but no contract was offered. I do know that the Joe Schobert injury is going to be a big loss.

Also missed will be Rashard Higgins (again).

Also, a bit disappointed to see Chubb not listed as the starter this week. Although, not at all shocking.

*whiny voice* "It's because of his pass blocking..."

If I were a coach who had a running back averaging 10.8 yards per carry but refused to play him because I asked him to pass block (instead of run) I would have to #watchthetape and see that I wasn't a very good coach.

yeah, that's what I thought I saw all afternoon by the Browns receivers...Not good.

That's why I think all the chatter about going after Beckham or Cooper. The Browns WR's were just horrible on Sunday. And they have had key drops every single game. There really is nothing more demoralizing than dropped passes, especially the game changers in the endzone.

I read they called up D. Scott from the practice squad...Next man up. Hopefully he can catch. I know I'm not buzzing with excitement over the Perriman signing, but we'll see. Maybe he'll step up. Somebody has to.

Hey, maybe Devalve can get it going. I don't doubt that Baker will put it on him....I wanna see Chubb more involved.

Why keep the rookie from seeing touches? Even if Hyde stayed the starter but just received fewer carries. Right now, if you rush 30 times a game, Hyde's getting 25, Johnson's getting three, and Hyde's getting two. Hyde's giving you 3.4 YPC and the other guys are double and triple that.

Given the short-handed nature of our receiver corp, here's what I don't understand: why isn't Duke your full-time slot receiver and you split those 30 carries between Hyde (short yardage, where he excels) and Chubb (who gives you outside edge and break-away speed).

Still wondering why seemingly no adjustments were made on defense Sunday. Rivers was laughing it up in his presser, going on about how he burnt us with the same play on back to back plays. That's just ridiculous....I'm telling ya, that crowd was amped up and they were into it. The question is, why weren't the Browns?

Tampa Bay obviously has an explosive offense, so our defense has very little time to get it together and adjust to life without one of the most underrated LB's in the NFL, Joe Schobert. But I think we have the talent. So I guess it's just a matter of do we get the effort? My guess is, after that embarrassment on Sunday, focus and intensity will ratchet up for Tampa....The Cleveland defense has played solid in four of the six games. Last year Jamies Winston had all kinds of issues, especially when it came to his propensity to turn the ball over. If Garrett and Avery can bring the edge pressure and keep Winston from extending plays, I think the Browns will rebound this week. Coming up with a couple turnovers will be huge and I see the Browns getting that done this week....

On defense, the Bucs can be had. I expect the Browns to try and maintain balance, but if Cleveland falls behind, I expect Baker to put up some big numbers (assuming his WR's figure out how to catch).....Tampa does not have near the running game that the Chargers did. They will depend on Winston and that big play passing attack to gash the Browns. Watch out for the TE's. Tampa uses both effectively. I imagine we'll have Ward on Evans most of the day, but Tampa has weapons everywhere that ya gotta watch out for, including a guy I was very high on coming out of Penn State, Chris Godwin. We absolutely must pressure Winston, because he'll have a field day with the weapons at his disposal if we give him time...The best defense, might be a great offense. I'd love to see the Browns get Nick Chubb more involved. He showed the big play ability in Oakland. Lets get him the football.

While I don't think this is the case most of the time, the Chargers game was dictated by the scoreboard. In the second half, they were hoping Baker would catch fire and in order to give him a chance, they needed the best blocking back they have, unfortunately that's Hyde, even though Hyde missed some key blocks as well. I understand this past game, it was the week before that had me perplexed.

I DO believe, given a game that we have a lead, you will see Chubb getting more carries....Although:

I agree here, you have almost as many RBs as you do WRs, why not utilize Duke more in the slot and give the RB duties to these two..that one is on Haley!

As are all of these questions you are throwing on Hue by the way. Haley is in charge of the play calling and personnel to run said plays. Hue decides the game day roster, but Haley has to utilize the players available on the sidelines...

This has me very worried TD!! What is going on in that locker room that these guys are only excited when they play division teams? Division games only makeup 38% of the games played, they need to find another gear!

The lack of adjustments, may be related to the lack of enthusiasm on both sides of the ball. Guys weren't getting to spots, they were standing there hoping someone else would end the play. It was ridiculous.

Great post, I agree with it word for word!!

I'll be honest. I don't have a very positive vibe about the Buccaneers game.
    • The loss of Schobert will be significant. I suspect players will get caught out of place too often.
    • Unless Perriman grew a set of hands since signing with the Browns last week, all he will do is draw a single DB away from run support.
    • We've all ready discussed our other deficiencies in the WR group ad nausium.
    • It is a road game that will be played in heat and high humidity.
    I hope I'm wrong but, I don't see a W this Sunday.

Unfortunately, I agree with you Lym....

However, this team is Jekyll and Hyde(Not Carlos), it really depends on which team shows up. They were embarrassed last week and I don't think this defense wants a repeat of what happened.

The offense is more than capable with staying stride for stride with the Buccs, but as @SAS already eluded, they need to get the TEs more involved which would include Seth DeValve. We have pass catching TEs, I'm not sure why they are using them more...

    What next????

Now, EJ Gaines shows up to the training facility with concussion symptoms, will miss this game....UGGH

Travis Carrie will have to hold down Mike Evans, because with Desean Jackson's speed, Denzel Ward will have to shadow him...Carrie/Boddy-Calhoun double team is what I see in the near future on Evans...Also a lot of Derrick Kindred in at SS, while Peppers mans the hybrid LB position. Greggggg(thank SAS for that) Williams is going to have to be creative!

If we play anything like the way we did against the Chargers on Sunday, we won't beat anybody...If we compete like we did the first 5 games, we got a shot. The Bears destroyed this Bucs defense a couple weeks ago. We have to set the tone from the beginning, and we have been awful in the first quarter. That needs to change. If we can disrupt the pocket on Winston and make life tough for him, I believe the Browns will pull the upset....I don't see us winning a shootout.

No question Haley should be asked about Duke Johnson and Nick Chubb's usage.

Will we put Ward on DeSean? I wouldn't. Evans is the #1, and IMO that's who Ward should be covering. Jackson is a threat almost exclusively for the deep pass. He doesn't like doing the middle of the field much, so again IMO, he's a homerun threat, but otherwise fairly containable, while Evans is a beast.

With a depleted secondary, it will be a test either way, but I'd roll with Ward on Evans. In either case we need a lot of MOO (Myles, Ogunjobi, Ogbah) to have a shot.

I'd like to believe we actually commit to and continue to run the ball. Double tight ends makes sense, and adds to the blocking available for the running attack, while requiring only 2 WRs (if we have 2). Njoku has talent, even considering his drops, and what happened to DeValve? He did a pretty nice job for us last season, but is like the forgotten man this year.

Duke, what can I say that already hasn't been said. We need guys to "catch the ball" and we don't have any depth, so............

I'm frustrated by the sporadic use on Chubb, and I get the "protection" perspective. So how is it that 6 games into he season we haven't been able to coach him up enough to be capable in that regard. I'm not feeling all that good about our coordinators at the moment. Game time adjustments have been lacking, and gameplans seem too predictable, but maybe that's just how it looks when you play a poor game.
