i never said he was "above average" at bama. i said he was the "greatest coach ever. " fine he was well above average at LSU as he did capture a National Title. hope your subscription to the Nick Saban fan club was worth it. lol.
Saban+Brees=Success in Miami of course you are free to disagree and we will truly never know but im going to bet on it would have been good rather than it would have failed. Of course at some point Saban may feel the need to return to the NFL and I'm willing to bet it will be in a much better situation than he was in at Miami. As someone pointed out already Belichick was not as great in Cleveland with Kosar as he has been in NE with Brady. I have seen a few people even suggesting Brady would not have been as good elsewhere please Brady would still be Brady on another team. Montana was still Montana was still Montana when Seifert took over for Walsh. He was also still Joe Cool when he moved on to Kansas City (don't think so its not coincidence that JJ Birden and Willie Davis two best career years happened when Joe was QB). The reason Saban failed in Miami was the same reason lots of coaches fail in the nfl his quarterbacks sucked. BTW Saban was 2-2 vs the Patriots as the Dolphins head coach I doubt there are many other coaches in the AFC east that can say they had a .500 record vs Belichick and Brady.
Report: NFL fines Mike Tomlin $25,000 for criticizing officiating... Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said earlier this week he didn’t expect the league to fine him for criticizing officials after Sunday’s game. The NFL, though, has indeed docked Tomlin’s pay. The league fined Tomlin $25,000, Jarrett Bell of USA Today reports. Tomlin, a member of the league’s competition committee, called the quality of officiating a “joke” after Sunday’s victory over Atlanta. “We’ve got to get better as a National Football League,” Tomlin said in his postgame interview. “Man, these penalties are costing people games and jobs. We’ve got to get them correct. And so I’m pissed about it, to be quite honest with you. But that’s all I’m going to say on it.” Tomlin might have escaped a fine, using the defense that his comment was fueled by emotion in the immediate aftermath of the game. But he told reporters Tuesday that he “meant it.” After the Steelers’ victory over Tampa Bay in Week Three featured 22 penalties between the teams, including four roughing the passer penalties, Tomlin expressed concern that the game is no longer fun to watch because of all the penalties. On Sunday, the Steelers and Falcons each had seven penalties. Steelers linebackers T.J. Watt and Jon Bostic each had questionable penalties called against them. (NBC's PFT)
Montana was a little older than i thought when Siefert took over. Joe Cool had a solid year. He was 33 yrs old and threw for 3521 yrds and 26 tds to 8 ints. i stated this before on here. I actually stated this on vacation last week in Pitt. If Mo Lewis doesn't collapse Drew Bledsoe's lung, the era of Tom Brady doesn't start when it did. The entire landscape of the NFL and NE is changed. Bledsoe signed a 10 yr extension so Brady, who was #2 on the QB roster, was looming, he wasn't a threat to take Drew's job. Do they still win the same Super Bowls vs St. Louis, Philly and Carolina with Bledsoe? Do they even play in the SB with Bledsoe at the helm ? No one knows. Brady got hurt, sol the one AFC Title game vs Pitt Bledsoe came in and did his mediocre best to win and the defense did the rest to advance to the SB. My point there is Bledsoe wasn't great in the game. he didn't throw over 250 yards. Do they win the SB with him? Brady went back in on 2 weeks rest. Does NE beat Oakland in the snow aka the tuck rule game with Bledsoe? That to me is so much bigger than if Brady played elsewhere. Brady and Belichick were made for each other. Brady in Cleveland doesn't have 5 rings. Sorry Cleveland. On the NY Jets? Bengals? Jaguars? etc? Nope. Most teams? Nope. He was a seventh round pick for a reason who happened to greatly benefit to be partnered with the greatest coach in NFL history due to the starting QB being injured and out. I'm not saying he wouldn't win, but if Bledsoe was healthy - when does Brady take over as QB? If it's 3-5 yrs later, that's 2 SBs with Brady not in them. Big difference.
The injury gave Brady the chance but its quit possible Brady would have eventually pushed him out of the way anyways. Great players are great for a reason. There is something in them that makes them different from other players. Maybe its in practice maybe he gets in late in a few games or maybe an injury happens at a later date but at some point he pushes Bledsoe out of the way not because Drew was a bad player but because Tom is a hall of fame player. Would he have won super Bowls with those other teams? Its easy to say no but If Brady is on those teams how much does it change who those teams are? Part of the problem with the browns has been well documented with their 900 qbs since their rebirth. If Brady is there they arent going through all those QBs. So now instead of wasting draft picks on QBs or free agent money on QB you are able to use those resources elsewhere. Brady being there changes the entire team wrs and tight ends who were average for the Browns during that period become something else. When Brady can make those guys better you can spend your picks on the defensive side of the ball. When Brady is your QB all of a sudden free agents want to come to the Browns. As for the he was a seventh round pick for a reason (btw he was a 6th round pick) you are right he was a 6th round pick for a reason because everyone out there got it wrong. It doesnt matter what round a player was drafted in a great player is a great player.
This should be a shootout, why, because it would be more entertaining than a 10-6 game. Seriously its a game for two desperate football teams trying to straighten things out. Might be another tie... who knows?
There are four games this week that could drastically affect those rankings. Chargers @ Browns Steelers @ Bengals Ravens @ Titans Chiefs @ Patriots
Seems like as often as not this decade, the NFC East is nothing special. Yeah, the defending champs are the Birds, and in 2016 and 2014 Dallas had pretty strong teams...but in 2015, 2013, and 2011 it was barely pedestrian.
Jean - was Brady truly great or the combination with Belichick and under then the Charlie Weis offense make him better ? If he was in NY or Cleveland, they would have neither Weis or Belichick, so how well does he do without them and without the NE front office compared to the front office that made a ton of mistakes for the last 20 years? I don't doubt Brady would've pushed out Bledsoe, but those first 1-3 Super Bowls are in jeopardy then. Take them off their resume and the NFL and NE's history is totally different. Finally - since NE had both and saw both in camp and practices why give Bledsoe a huge extension then ? If Brady was going to replace him inside of 2-4 years, why extend Bledsoe so long ? That to me sounds like they didn't believe Brady was taking over at all, hence locking up Bledsoe for a long time. Brady was solid at Michigan, but not great or the future GOAT or HOF'er. . i think he went in the 6th rd for that reason. I think he split some playing time at UM with baseball player Drew Henson, so he played all 4 yrs but lost some starts to Henson. WHo knows ?
I took the Browns at home, but it wont be easy... Went with the home team in the Cincy Pit game too. If the Bengals are on, that's my high scoring game of the week right there... Ravens and Titans was the toughest game for me to decide on, but I settled for the home team in a close one... I picked the Chiefs to go into Foxboro and win. The Chiefs, in my opinion, are the real deal... $0.02
That's what I was going to say. Anyone who listens to Schefter for opinions is ill-advised in the first place, but he's pushing a narrative that so many others have tried to sell, as well. The NFC East hasn't been impressive for some time, now. Sure, there have been a couple standout teams sprinkled in, but usually not more than one in a given year. It's an overhyped division living on the accomplishments of yesteryear and the ratings they can generate. But if you're not an NFC East fan... who has cared about this division over the last handful of years? Schefty keeps giving you good reasons to ignore him.
a few years ago Schefty reported something on the Eagles, i think a big rumor, that was wildly false. since then i don't pay attention to him. im an Eagles fan and i care about the Eagles. I don't care much about the division or its history as what the others teams do is out of the Eagles control and vice versa.
You can make the same damn case about any QB. Would Montana have been winning Super Bowls and putting up big numbers if he didn't have Walsh and Jerry Rice? Marino without Shula and Marks Brothers? Etc.
Marino never won a SB. Montana won a SB without Jerry Rice. And Axe, I was only answering Jean's response to my original post about Brady being great elsewhere considering he was a 6th rd pick and would he be great outside of NE.
He's great at throwing a million things at the dartboard, and only talking about the one that stuck. If we talked about all the times his speculation was wrong, or his opinions were grossly misplaced... If you've ever watched or heard him on anything where he's not just getting to talk without interruption / question, or there's even the slightest hint of him getting called out on anything, he's a real punk bitch, too. I've got no respect for the guy.
Marino retired as the leader of pretty much of major statistical passing category. I had included Walsh with Montana as well. Who cares if he was a sixth round pick? Meaningless. The history of the NFL is LOADED with players taken in rounds 5, 6, 7 (and beyond) who were great players, Hall of Famers.
{sigh} Neither did Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Ben Roethlisberger or Nick Foles for that matter. The Patriots, 49ers, Steelers and Eagles won Super Bowls. Winning a league championship in ANY team sport is a TEAM accomplishment.
axe? go back and read what jean and i are talking about. it's not meaningless brady went in the 6th rd in the context to our conversation.
