Nola isn't that far behind these guys. he went from a 3rd tier pitcher to an Ace overnight on a team that shit the bed the second half of the season. he won't win, but will finish 3rd. i bet if you had to preseason pick the top 3 no one would have Nola in there. that's progress.

snell's era is low and if not for degrom's era, a big story. his wins are nice, but a lot of writers discount wins as a meaningless stat. to me wins should count too. Degrom's 10 is just too low for me, regardless of his shitty team.

Usually the 20 win plateau is the marker that gets you into the conversation. Degrom is great, but 10 isn't enough when Max has 18 + 300 strike outs.

In Degrom's 32 starts this season he allowed...

    0 runs in 8 starts
    1 run in 10 starts
    2 runs in 5 starts
    3 runs in 8 starts
    4 runs in 1 start

He never allowed more than 4 runs and only gave up 1 or less in 56% of his starts.

That's obscene. His W/L record is irrelevant.

More I think about it, I wonder if they might go ahead and give it to deGrom just to avoid giving Max three straight. He's certainly well deserving, though, even if that is their reasoning.

SIERA is an interesting advanced metric...it has Scherzer just ahead of deGrom, 2.71 to 2.79, and Verlander just ahead of them and #1 in the AL at 2.67. FIP has deGrom well ahead of Scherzer and actually has Patrick Corbin a bit ahead of Scherzer, as well, and Trevor Bauer #1 in the AL just barely ahead of Corbin.

Cue Catfish grumbling about advanced metrics in 5...4...3... :D

blow me. no need to discuss it. it shouldn't dictate baseball or the awards. it does. i can't stop it. never heard or seen FIP or Siera until you just posted about them. i have no idea what they are. i just looked them up. one is based on adjustments. that to me is not a real stat. a stat is a real stat not some adjusting to make it one.

the only Siera I know is Ruben Sierra. hahahaha

bears -- 10 wins is still 10 wins. irrelevant or not. it would be the lowest EVER not counting relievers to win the award. giving the guy the cy young award with a 10-9 record is unprecedented.

Put deGrom on the Astros or Red Sox....think he still has 10 wins?

Cy Young is an individual award.

No pitcher in baseball has pitched better than deGrom this year.

All stats are somewhat subjective. Even ERA and counting W/L for individuals.

There are no truly objective stats.

Exactly. Until somebody decided one day that if a starting pitcher went at least 5 innings and left the game with a lead his team didn’t give up there was no such stat as a “win,” either.

Cat I know we’ve fruitlessly discussed advanced metrics in the past so I know I’m not going to convince you, but the “adjustments” in those stats are about quieting down the noise from factors beyond the pitcher’s control (like park differences, the quality of his team’s defense, etc.) and trying to show how the pitchers really performed and not just how many counting stats they compiled. They’re not perfect but neither is any stat. Disraeli and all that lol. Hey I love statistical analysis, and you don’t and that’s cool, but advanced metrics are no less “real” than the traditional ones.

being on a different team bears is irrelevant. you could have 18 wins on the red sox. hell i could have 12. haha.

and when does the Cy always go to the best pitcher? in most cases yes, but in some cases no. scherzer has a damn good case for it this year. Nola doesnt. it's a 2 horse race. for the AL does Snell have the best case for the Cy? he had a below 2 era and 21 wins with 1 more start to come. is that enough? verdy and sale have had solid seasons too. the voters are a finicky bunch.

  13. BearsWillWin Drunk (Probably) Patreon Champion Manager Bears Blackhawks Cubs

No it’s not irrelevant. A pitcher should be judged by what he does...not what the team around him does.

No one in baseball pitched better than deGrom...no one gave his team a better chance at victory in every outing.

If deGrom played on a team that had the ability to score more runs he’d no doubt have more wins and there’d be no argument.

they don't vote on the award for who could win more on a different team. your comment of "if he pitched for the sox or astros" doesn't make a difference. the team he did play for only got him 10 wins vs 9 losses. the lowest cy young winner, who was not a reliever, was felix hernandez with 12.

degrom will probably win it. i think scherzer has a slim chance.

Degrom pulling off the double fecta of Cy Young and NL MVP ?

depends on who you ask. the old timers will say it's bullshit. the younger breed say it's taking over baseball.

look at the phils this year. completely run by metrics and a computer. they were 15 games over .500 by july 1 with an ace, a former ace who was ok, 3 stiffs as starters and a shitty bullpen and closer. their hitters were hitting out of their asses and everyone was happy. what happened? REALITY U DOG. their pitchers besides Nola all sucked, which anyone could tell you and it showed and they got killed in the second half of the season. their hitters showed their true colors and everyone one of them slumped for 2 months. they went from 15 games above and in first place to 3 games under .500 and in 3rd place. how are the metrics now? not saying you're wrong but you can't run a team via a metrics sheet. the eyes and ears test works wonders when everyone but kapler saw santana sucking for 3 months. herrera needed to be benched and former top prospect for 3 freaking years JP Crawford was probably now a colossal bust. and wonderboy Scott Kingery and his uncalled for $28 million dollar extension can't hit MLB pitching, was overmatched and headed to bustville as well. don't need metrics to see that. turn on the tv and watch it live.

to me if you wanna dissect baseball players down to a minute level - you need metrics to show value etc in various scenarios and lefty/righty, home/away, runners on 3rd, scoring with 2 outs, etc and so on. metrics will show just how great mike trout really he vs the all-time greats. he's our version of babe ruth or lou gehrig. you want it - have it. im an old fart who likes the triple crown stats. im a baseball purist. nothing is changing that u dog. i think moneyball is bullshit as the A's never won a WS with Billy Beane. for all the talk about it and the movie - where is his ring ?

simply looking at a player like carlos santana for 4 months gives you plenty of ammo to why he needed to not play 1b or for the phils when he wasn't producing. walks isn't enough to keep playing him. herrera went from leading the NL in batting with batting over .370 to under .250 2 months later. you don't need a computer for that. and he needed to be bench for lack of producing. don't need a computer for that either.

so you have MLB your way and i'll have it my way.

You want to penalize him for a lack of wins...which has EVERYTHING to do with the team he played for. Because he did everything in his power to win games.

So yes....the team he plays for makes a huge difference.

  18. BearsWillWin Drunk (Probably) Patreon Champion Manager Bears Blackhawks Cubs

I hope not because he’s not an MVP. This is an award where team performance should matter.

Which is why if any not named Javy Baez wins the NL MVP....I’m boycotting baseball.

yeah but u can't say if he pitched for someone else. everyone could say that. put Aaron Nola on the Red Sox and he has 20+ wins easy. he has 16 now on that phillies team.

and it's history bears. no cy winner has had 10 wins. it's unprecedented. i know how good he is. he will win it. im just saying if you're going to break down every stat and add in the new ones then he's your man. face value he's the winner. i just can't believe he will win with a 10-9 record.

    i
if u read the cbs thing i posted, i think they have 3 pitchers up for MVP. haha.
