anything less than the WS Title would have to be a failure. 106 wins better bring home the WS !

John Gibbons won't be back as Toronto skipper …

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons will not be back as manager next season, Jon Paul Morosi of MLB.com reports, confirming an earlier report by Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, who said Toronto will make an announcement today.

Gibbons managed Toronto for two stints -- once from 2004-08 and again from 2013-18. In 2015, Gibbons led the Blue Jays to their first postseason berth in 22 years. Toronto lost to Kansas City in the American League Championship Series in six games.

In an 89-73 season, he led the club to another playoff berth in '16. Toronto lost to Cleveland in the ALCS in five games.

The Blue Jays entered Wednesday in fourth place in the American League East with a 71-87 record. Gibbons' overall record as manager is 791-787.

That's exactly what they said they're going to do. He can't actually play at the level of a capable major leaguer any more, they just want to give the fans a chance to send him off...so they're not going to play him in games that might mean anything...not sure where you're getting spite from? This is akin to the White Sox giving Minnie Minoso a couple of meaningless pinch hitting appearances at the end of the season in 1980 so he could say he played in 4 decades.

but once the braves get home field or not, they cant play him at all? he's that bad? the entire team stinks. what's a few at-bats going to do? this guy gave his heart and soul to the team. he deserves a little better than to ride the bench vs the marlins.

wow that's a lot of wins. more than i thought he had.

    Anybody could do his job.

was donaldson that hurt? his trade didn't bring much, which was shocking unless he's done for his career ?? like bautista...his skills vanished quickly. from 40 hrs to like 12. ouch.

700+ wins is not too shabby.

im so happy of the phils demise as all those idiotic phils fans were loving life on july 31 being in first place and NOT wanting to make trades to get better. they all said "why do we need to trade, we are in first place?" fast forward to now - 1 game under .500. love it. never cheered against them in my life but now. kapler is a moron and has no business managing a pro team. klentak couldn't manage a dairy queen let alone a pro team. they both should be canned like tuna oct 1 !

    Yeah, josh was hurt.

Gibby had a lot of wins because his 2nd time around he inherited a playoff team. He was half asleep most of the times, baseball managers don't factor in that much on a teams success.

phils are prime example of that. u still need a good x's and o's man and game changer.

I don't know, jose and EE in their prime with JD and Tulo and your winning.
Take away the players and he's losing, doesn't seem to make a big difference like a hockey or football coach.

the skill set of Tulo and Bautista faded very fast. this is due to age and injuries. baseball at times is a strategic game. it's needs a manager to counter the other manager's move i.e. relief pitcher, replacement fielder etc. like they say in the movies "it's chess, not checkers."

After they won their division, there was 5 games left and he rested his starters on the last two games vs baltimore. He didn't even try to get the best record in the league to get home field advantage vs texas, fail. His job is to make the moves, but how much different would another man that's been involved in the sport his whole life.
At the end of the game whenever they would interview him, it literally sounded like he just woke up.

It's pretty much a toss-up between Scherzer and deGrom, IMO, they've both been really, really good all year. The voters have become sophisticated enough in their understanding of the advanced metrics to appreciate how well deGrom has pitched this year and that it's not his fault his garbage team couldn't ever score any runs for him (he had one start this year that he allowed more than 3 runs, and that was only 4, and was one of his no decisions...he easily should've won 20+ with even average run support), but in the end I doubt they'll look past Scherzer's advantage in wins and strikeouts.

AL is an interesting three-way race, too...Blake Snell has gaudy wins and ERA, but only pitched 175 innings whereas Verlander and Kluber were both over 200 and Kluber won 20 and Verlander led in K's by a mile...I'm betting the writers go for the "feel good" angle and give it to the guy who hasn't won it before and whose team has an unexpectedly good season.
