Well Joel Bitonio did say they actually called the play Philly Special although Hue denied it. Baker apparently never took a rep before. It helps he ran a similar play in college.

I never really understood some of the love for Taylor I've seen from various outlets. "Oh, he's really underrated; he's just burdened with sub-par talent."

Some of the Browns fans will tell you - he was an "analytics darling", if I remember correctly. There were a few fans who kept pointing to one metric or another to back up the assertion you cited.

Because every year that he has been a starter he is ranked between 10-16 in the league in every category. That means over half the league is looking for someone at least as good as he is to lead their team, because their guy is a worse QB. I think the pressure of Baker Mayfield got to Tyrod Taylor this year and he knew in the back of his head, if this kid gets a shot, he is a clip board holder the rest of the year. It made him even more timid than he already was and in desperation times in the second half, he tried to make things happen that weren't there. Thus two turnovers in two games, where he only have it up 3 times in 15 games last year. Tyrod is still a mediocre QB in the NFL, but right now, there are about 15 teams that would take mediocre QB play instead of what they are getting... Some of these guys LOSE their team games, Tyrod doesn't do that, he just isn't capable of winning them either. The team around him needs to produce the wins.

There is no way there are 15 teams that would start Taylor right now over whoever they have.

Arizona is 1. Denver could, possibly, be 2. The other 29 teams that aren't the Browns either have their guy or think they may have their guy.

Right now, Tyrod Taylor isn't playing top 15 QB football...I am saying over his career, THAT is what he was and why he got the underrated moniker attached. Right now, in 2018 he is about the 28th best QB... There are also, FIVE other rookies inserted from this past draft and another 3-4 that still have hope from last year's draft...once most of their luster wears off, someone like Tyrod would be welcome....if he gets back to the type of play he showed the last 3 years in Buffalo. Again, I'm not saying he is a sure fire starter to get your team to a Super Bowl and you will find NO posts stating anything near that type of praise. But I have witnessed QB play that costs a team games repeatedly over the last two decades and I know how it feels to just want a guy who doesn't lose you games....That's Tyrod Taylor.

Edit: Before last night, Tyrod Taylor didn't lose a game for the Browns, he also didn't win any...

I get what you're saying but outside of being a guy that won't throw a lot of picks....he's never been a top 15 QB at any point in his career.

Except the last 3 years of his career...Are you looking at one single stat? or are you looking at an overall QB rating? How do you personally determine who is top 15?

How do you determine who is a top 15 QB?

There's no one single stat to determine it. It's a combination of stats and how the offense plays as a whole with the QB...wins and losses...and so on. I don't think there is a definite equation that will tell you who is better than who and it certainly isn't just stats.

But if I were looking at just last season alone....I'm taking Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Wilson, Big Ben, Stafford, Wentz, Newton, Goff, Keenum, Ryan, Cousins, Smith, Garoppolo, Rivers, Prescott, Winston, Bortles, Watson, Carr, and McCown over Taylor.

I think that is 21 guys. A few of them had shortened seasons due to injury...but if healthy...they're starting for me over Taylor.

I've watched lots of Bills games. He wasn't good. He was just the only option in Buffalo that kept throwing it where no one could get it. For a long time and they weren't ready to search for a new QB. The Bills suck now because they lost tons of players and their only QBs aren't really ready.

Nick Foles ran it in college at Arizona or High School in Texas and that's how he knew of the play.

I typically use the QB rating, since that factors in all aspects

  16. AxeMurderer Legend Cowboys

Agree with DLine - Top 15 HOW exactly? What are you looking at?

I'm throwing out attempts, completions, and yardage because he clearly doesn't throw as often as other QBs. But in 2017 and 2016 (respectively) he was 16th and 20th in completion percentage, 27th and 24th in yards per attempt, 18th and 19th in QB rating...

So, in essence, he doesn't throw much, and when he does he doesn't get the ball downfield very well and his accuracy is middling.

Sorry, I'm not getting it even a little.

    That's a bad idea.

As BWW said, judging a QB can't be done by any one metric, or easily / accurately.

If you're talking ESPN's TQBR....it doesn't factor in all aspects and is just as subjective as the old fashioned passer rating.

  19. AxeMurderer Legend Cowboys

    He was 7th in 2015, but 18th and 19th in 2017 and 2016, respectively.

    Patriots- Brady
    Packers- Rodgers
    Saints- Brees
    Seahawks- Wilson
    Steelers- Ben
    Eagles- Wentz
    Rams- Goff
    Panthers- Newton
    Falcons- Ryan
    Vikings- Cousins
    Redskins- Smith
    Chargers- Rivers

These are all SURE things...I agree There ate 12 for certain, no questions attached

But, any given year, there are teams CONSTANTLY giving up on McCown
Thus far Keenum right now has a 73.5 rating, the Vikings may have made him look better than he really is. We will see.
Garoppolo hit the league by storm, but so far this year, he looks very ordinary..much like Taylor, we'll see if he rises or falls
Prescott has shown, without Elliot, he is below average. We'll see if he develops.
Bortles has EVERYTHING going for him right now on that Jaguars team. If he is removed from there and put on the Bills, would you feel the same way?
Carr, there are rumblings that the Raiders might move on from him after this season..
Deshawn Watson, came out like gang busters, but since the injury, hasn't been the same...He will have to get back to normal before stating for sure.

It isn't even about the rest of the names on your list, every year there is another list of names, his is the one that stays consistent in that middle of the pack. He never rises above and rarely dips too far below. He's just a constant mediocre QB....Of course you are going to want to take the young guy with upside potential, you know what you have in Taylor. But, when that potential takes a solid down turn and they look like a turd, you would wish you had Tyrod to take the reigns until you get the next young guy with upside. The names change every year, but the last 3 years, Tyrod has been the most mediocre QB in the league.
