Todd Reirden takes over as Washington Capitals head coach The succession plan was in place, and on Friday it was Todd Reirden’s time. The Washington Capitals have announced that the 47-year-old Reirden will be their new head coach, replacing Barry Trotz, who resigned 11 days ago following their Stanley Cup victory. “We feel that the time is right for Todd to lead our hockey club,” said Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan. “Based on his coaching experience, communication abilities, his approach to the game and the respect he commands in our locker room, we feel that Todd has earned this opportunity. Todd has played an integral part in helping lead our team to the Stanley Cup championship and we feel his appointment as head coach will enable our organization to transition seamlessly into next season and beyond.” Reirden, who played 183 NHL games with four teams, was hired as one of Trotz’s assistant coaches in 2014 after four years with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 2016 he was promoted to associate coach, showing just how much the franchise valued him. It was also an opportunity, as MacLellan said earlier this month, to groom him to become an NHL head coach, whether in Washington or somewhere else. “The players all know him, they’re comfortable with him,” MacLellan said last week. “He’ll have a good feel for personalities, how to motivate people and so forth.” Since Trotz’s departure, it was pretty clear that Capitals players were excited at the prospect at Reirden getting the promotion. “He’s a guy who’s a very good communicator, very good specialist, and has lots of respect from us,” said captain Alex Ovechkin. “Guys have a lot of respect for Todd,” said defenseman John Carlson after re-signing. “And if that’s the case, then he’s going to do a great job.” Under Trotz, Reirden was in charge of the defensemen and a power play that has consistently been among the league’s best. Now his first NHL coaching gig is leading the defending champions. No pressure. (NHL.com)
https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/...johnsons-comments-about-blue-jackets-culture/ Torts goes on epic rant about Jack Johnson signing with Pittsburgh.
JJ should’ve just said, he’s looking forward to a new start with a successful organization and is eager to put his past personal troubles in the rear view mirror. Doesn’t he have attorneys or PR teams to help out with this kind of shit?
JJ can just call me if he needs some presser help. I’ll charge less than an attorney (but I’ll definitely want seats). That weasel doesn’t look slimy. That fur coat is fresh as fuck.
Rags plunder Greg Brown from the good guys. Happy for him that he’ll get this opportunity. Really good coach and guy. https://www.hockeyjournal.com/greg-brown-boston-college-new-york-rangers/
Quenneville says he's not thinking about job security with Blackhawks Coach 'can't control' what may happen if season starts poorly... CHICAGO -- Joel Quenneville acknowledged some uncertainty about his future as coach of the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday. "As a coach, [getting fired] can happen at any moment. That's all part of our business. It's the way it goes," Quenneville said at the annual Blackhawks Convention. "We're in the winning business, and as a coach, that's the only way we think, is winning the next game. The other stuff, we can't control. We're fighting to get two points, getting the guys ready to play and playing right. That's our job, and I can't think of the other things." Bowman said pressure is "nothing concrete, it's just what people perceive." "We can't control what other people are thinking or saying. We just have to stay focused on how we try to improve our team," he said. "We all want to do well and this is why we do this. We're part of the Blackhawks because we want to win. Everybody, from the front office to coaches to players, there's no other thing we want other than to be successful. The expectations are there, and understandably so. "But it's not something you sit and talk about or fixate on. Because at the end of the day, when you perform well, that other stuff all takes care of itself." In 10 seasons with the Blackhawks, Quenneville is 446-243-93 and won the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He's the second-winningest coach in NHL history (884-526-134 with 77 ties also coaching the St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche) behind Scotty Bowman (1244-573-10 with 314 ties). There will be pressure this season, but Quenneville, who turns 60 on Sept. 15, said he is too focused on getting results to pay attention to it. "As a coach, you're in the winning business. That's what you're here for and that's what you want to do," he said. "I think everybody has the same motivation to win and the final results are being a playoff team and trying to be champions. That's where we're at." (NHL.com) _________ ____________________ I guess you cant put too much of the blame on Quenneville, he has to deal with what he has, but at the same time, when it comes to looking for 'scapegoats', the coach gets the first draw of accusations. I think he's a good coach and how they start is going to be interesting, but the Hawks org needs to realise teams in their Division are so much better now and don't have the Cap Space issues the hawks have. Maybe Chicago can get some goaltending, that would help matters.
Hawks fans hoping Seabrook can turn it around, supposedly he’s dropped weight this summer to try to quicken up his first step. I ain’t buying
The Washington Capitals have named Scott Arniel and Reid Cashman as assistant coaches on Todd Reirden's staff. Arniel spent the last five seasons as an associate coach with the New York Rangers. Cashman spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Hershey Bears.
