Throw out George Halas, Curley Lambeau and Paul Brown. Those three were founders of their respective teams. Likewise, throw out Bill Cowher and George Seifert. They were promoted on winning teams after their predecessors retired. What remains on that list is coaches who were hired to fix shitty teams. Its no wonder most lost their first game.
The Pats actually weren't a shitty team by our standards then. 8-8 under Carrol I believe. We were use to Dick McPhearson and Rod Rust. Tommy Hodson Hugh Millen combos
Falcons put MLB Deion Jones on IR. They're in some trouble now, losing two of their best defenders in the opener. It's another reason to rethink their approach to preseason this year. Last Thursday the whole team looked like they were playing the second game of preseason. The execution and communications were abysmal, and now they're paying the price on the conditioning side as well. Deion Jones had only played 3 snaps all preseason. Keanu Neal was held out of games 3 and 4 and only played 3 snaps in the first game. Devonta Freeman was held out of all four preseason games by coaching decision, and his status is uncertain as well - the team even called up Brian Hill from the practice squad for added RB depth.
Patriots signing Kenjon Barner… The Patriots needed a running back and now they have one. Kenjon Barner is expected to sign with New England, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports. The Patriots were expecting running back Jeremy Hill to play a major role in their offense this season, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week One. Barner, who worked out for the Patriots last week, will pick up some of the slack. A sixth-round pick of the Panthers in 2013, Barner has had two different stints with the Panthers as well as two different stints with the Eagles, and he briefly spent time with the Chargers as well. He has 77 carries for 317 yards and 21 catches for 127 yards in his NFL career, and he also has experience returning punts and kickoffs. (PFT)
Steelers remove Le’Veon Bell from depth chart... From the moment the Steelers unveiled their online depth chart for 2018, Le'Veon Bell appeared on it as the first-string running back. Now, two days after James Conner generated nearly 200 yards from scrimmage in the Week One game against the Browns, Bell’s name is nowhere to be seen. The team has removed Bell’s name from the depth chart, as his holdout lingers. It’s unclear why they did it. Maybe it’s a way to apply pressure to Bell, via a “we’re moving on without you” vibe aimed at getting him to choose to climb onto the train as it rolls away. Or maybe they finally realized that Bell shouldn’t have been on the depth chart in the first place. Although the Steelers hold the exclusive right to enter into a contract with Bell, there is no contract. He isn’t an employee of the Steelers. And he won’t be until he signs a contract. When that happens remains to be seen. The reasoning that prompted him to miss one regular-season game (a desire to avoid being overused) should prompt him to miss as many as he can while still preserving his ability to become a free agent next year. Which means that he may be off the depth chart until the Tuesday after Week 10, the latest day on which he can sign the franchise tender and as a practical matter win his freedom for 2019. (PFT) ________ ____________________ Bell apparently is a head case or rich enough or both... the Steelers made this move after they saw Connor's performance and are trying to apply pressure... strange case, indeed.
after Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennell left NE, they didn't win a SB for over 7 or 8 yrs. everyone said it was bc they left. Weis was a trainwreck at ND and KS. Never knew what Crennell did afterwards. Belichick and Brady went on to win 2 more SBs and lost one. I think they did just fine without them !
George, Curley and Paul all coached against teams that were in their first year as well so not sure what them being the founders has to do with anything. Cowher took over a team that went 7-9 the previous season.
Paul Brown's first NFL game was against the 1949 World Champion Philadelphia Eagles (Steeler fans keep reminding us that AAFC games don't count). It didn't hurt that his 1950 team had 4 years of experience in the AAFC. Halas and Lambeau started out in a time when teams cherry picked their opponents to inflate their season W/L record.
That was in the AAFC. His first NFL game was in 1950 against the Eagles. Good story about that game that I'll share when I get some more time. (My grandson is on his way over to say good bye before he leaves for USAF basic training.)
I'm sure by grandson you mean great-great-great-great-great-great grandson. But we all know everyone just drops the greats.
After the Browns defeated the Eagles 35-10 in the 1950 season opener, the Eagles attempted to discredit the upstart Browns by saying that passing for 346 yards and three TD's was not the way real NFL teams played the game. So, Paul Brown vowed that in their second scheduled meeting in December of that same year the Browns would defeat the Eagles by just running the ball. Then, on December 3rd, 1950, the Browns defeated the Eagles again by a score of 13-7 and Otto Graham didn't officially throw a single pass in the game. (He did throw one 10 yard completion but it was negated by a motion penalty.) That was the last time an NFL team played an entire game without officially attempting a single pass.
Nope. Just a plain vanilla grandson. I do have three great-grandsons (and one great-grand daughter) but they're a bit young to enlist in the armed forces.
Joey Bosa week-to-week with foot injury... Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa is considered week-to-week with a foot injury. That’s the word from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, who reports that Bosa visited specialist Dr. Robert Anderson today and did get some good news, which is that he’s not considered a candidate for injured reserve. When healthy Bosa is one of the best defensive players in the league, and last year he started all 16 games. But this year the foot injury kept him out of the entire preseason and Week One of the regular season. How many weeks Bosa will miss is up in the air, but the Chargers would love to get him back on the field, especially after their defense was torched without Bosa in Week One. (PFT)
