Report: Randy Gregory faces new discipline under substance-abuse policy...

Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory, whose NFL career has been overshadowed by substance-abuse issues since those issues caused him to drop in the 2015 NFL draft, is once again in hot water with the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gregory relapsed and could be disciplined by the NFL as soon as this week.

There were murmurs about another issue with Gregory all summer, but the Cowboys denied any knowledge of any issue.

Gregory played in just two games in 2016 and zero games in 2017 because of substance-abuse suspensions, and another violation of the league policy would ordinarily result in another suspension. But the NFL has recently shifted gears toward steering players into treatment, rather than suspending them, over substance-abuse issues. So it’s possible that Gregory will be allowed to continue playing.

What is clear is that the cloud that has hung over Gregory throughout his career continues to hang over him three and a half years after he was drafted. (PFT)

Phillip Lindsay doing well for Denver early. I liked him coming out of college and thought he'd be drafted and make a team (he went undrafted) but I never expected him to see meaningful time early, especially on a team with Freeman and Booker.

I see you out there, Antonio Gates.

Retirement treated him pretty good I guess, looking like a right guard running routes, lol.

Titans are done. Gabbert had to come in for an injured Mariota and threw the ball to a defender that was all alone on the ground when he slipped for an INT. Then Delanie Walker hurt his ankle and may be out for significant time. There may be no coming back from this, even in the AFC.

Some of the worst play-calling I've seen in Dallas' loss. That was a JV league offensive game plan.

Whoever blocked in the back is surely getting blamed for this in the locker room.

One helmet rule penalty was called on Sunday

Thursday night’s opening game between the Eagles and Falcons featured 28 penalty flags, but none of them were for violations of the league’s new rule governing the use of the helmet.

None of the games on Sunday involved that many flags, but the lack of outsize impact from the rule change was the same. Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports that there was only one penalty for lowering the head to initiate contact across 13 games on Sunday.

Chiefs safety Ron Parker was flagged for a hit on Chargers running back Austin Ekeler in the first quarter of Kansas City’s win, but the rest of the games were free of flags for violations of the new rule. That includes Bengals safety Shawn Williams‘ ejection for a hit on Colts quarterback Andrew Luck as the league deemed that an unnecessary roughness foul rather than a helmet foul.

The lack of penalties continues the trend that started midway through the preseason when the NFL clarified the rule did not cover inadvertent contact and flags stopped flying as regularly as they had in the first two weeks of exhibition games. (PFT)

Seantrel Henderson out for year, Kevin Johnson out a while

The Texans lost Sunday’s game to the Patriots and they lost their right tackle for the season in the process.

Seantrel Henderson left the game in the first quarter and a report said he broke a bone in his ankle. Texans head coach Bill O’Brien said on Monday, per multiple reporters, that Henderson will have surgery to repair his injury and will not return in 2018 as a result of the injury.

The Texans brought Henderson in this offseason in hopes of improving their line play. They moved Julie'n Davenport from the left side after Henderson’s injury and put third-round pick Martinas Rankin in at left tackle.

Cornerback Kevin Johnson left Sunday’s game with a concussion. Johnson also suffered a concussion in the preseason and O’Brien said that Johnson will be out for a while after the latest head injury. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports Johnson is expected to miss at least four weeks and may be a candidate for injured reserve.(PFT)
