That is a much better eventual outcome than i was expecting in all honesty. The price was still very high, no getting around that, but there's a few things i know: - Pass rush was my biggest concern for the D this year. - On a Fangio D with the current personnel, this has the chance to be a legit top5 unit. - I love good Defense. - The Tucker years killed me, anything that takes us further from that can't be all bad. - Offense and Defense go hand in hand. There is some truth to the notion that this move will also help the Offense through getting the ball more, less scoreboard pressure etc. Mack's arrival achieves all of the above. Thats good. BUT, that help for the Offense will be largely meaningless if Trubisky doesn't pan out. This team moving from 6 up to 8 wins off this trade does nothing for me. Not when i know they are hamstrung in the draft for the next 2 years. They need to start making the playoffs, thats what i will be judging them against. The picks have been spent, the rebuild is over. Its win now. And Pace had better be right about Trubisky.
Thank goodness..... This thread was incomplete without one of our resident village idiots/pats fan gracing us with his presence and giving us the precious product of his remaining two brain cells colliding. It's rarer than any total solar eclipse, and we have been beyond blessed, guys. All we're missing is Alex Guerrero injecting our quarterback in the ass with "proven, secret, natural medicinal enhancement" with his unmatched wits of his online masters degree in Oriental Medicine from Samra University; sorry--Samra Clinic. They were downgraded because it totally wasn't considered a fraud in court but that's okay. That powerful degree and knowledge "will eventually be given accreditation status." <----definitely NOT the exact wording on their website. What's most important is the status of the Patriots, not a blockbuster trade for a premier pass rusher.
Didn't get a chance to see trade details until this morning. I'm ecstatic. That's better than I anticipated. Upgraded two picks, and didn't give up anything meaningful beyond the two firsts, which is what we knew it would take anyway. That is fucking awesome. He is getting paid a TON of money. I mean, holy fuck. I don't think he's worth more than Aaron Donald, but no doubt he's the top star on our "go get him" list. My concern is the one that a couple people brought up most recently: is he in top football shape, and when will he be ready to really be utilized? Because that's what matters now. I didn't get a chance to enjoy yesterday. I'm so upset. Gonna have to catch up and do all my reveling today.
I don't worry about him being ready...he is known as a workout freak and he's a physical anomaly. I'm sure they will simplify things for him for the first week and his only job will be rushing the passer next Sunday night and from there he can grow into his role in the defense. His primary responsibility is one of the easiest to understand but hardest to do in football. Just get the QB. Tee off. The Bears don't blitz a ton...they don't do a lot of exotic things on defense. So his transition shouldn't be hard in that regard.
One of the best parts of this, outside of what Mack does on the field, is what he brings to the locker room. He's known as a team guy that other players have a lot of respect for. That's important.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...k-trade-raises-pressure-on-both-bears-raiders Some of you may have seen this but interesting read here Battista is a good analyst. The Bears' belief that they won't need to use a first-round pick in the near future to land a franchise quarterback is why they were comfortable parting with those two picks. In short, Pace's assessment of Trubisky is an even bigger bet than his assessment of Mack. Both had better be right. This is essentially what ive been saying. Pace doesn't make this trade if he isn't sold on Trubisky. For the trade to be a true success Trubisky has to be a success. Judging this trade on the performance of Mack in isolation is wrong. Its success is tied to the performance of both Trubisky and Mack. As is Pace's job most certainly.
If anything this move buys Pace more time to make the Trubisky thing work. Mack elevates the defense to possible elite level in this league and allows the offense time to grow.
IMO Drafting Trubisky was Pace moving all his chips into the middle of the table. Trading for Mack is him taking the car keys to his parents new Porsche and throwing them on top. The price was steep but how do you not get excited to land one of the best defenders of his generation in his prime. 2019 draft will a going to suck for sure but having 2 seconds in 2020 will be nice.
Because I think the pendulum has to swing back in our favor every once in a while, I'm predicting we go 11-5.
It’s a possibility. I had 8-8 before the Mack trade. 10-6, 11-5, why the fuck not? I’ve seen worse teams on paper do that. Put Mack on the same side as Hicks. And don’t forget Floyd on the other side. Good luck defending that. Tough moving the ball running 3 TE sets and keeping a RB in to protect all game.
Agreed, Pre Mack I had them in the 7-9 to 9-7 range, lot of that's because I've still concerns about special teams. That's not because the Bears haven't significantly improved but because everyone else in this division made improvements as well. NFC is a very, tough division now.
I had the Bears at 6-10 in the median with 4-12 being the bottom and 8-8 being best case scenario. I now see them as 9-7 and 11-5 if everything goes right while being 7-9 if shit hits the fan.
I had us at 8-8 before this trade, with the standard deviations being 6-10 and 9-7. I think we have a real shot at 10-5 now. Frankly if we weren't in this division I'd be a lot more confident, but the NFC North is stacked this year. Before this trade we basically kept the same defense and added a lot of personnel upgrades to the offense. The way I view it, even if Trubisky stagnates this year and isn't the guy Pace wants him to be, the offense should *still* be a lot better than last year just based on weapons added alone. Just look at our WRs last year and where they are this year. Literally none of our top 4 guys were rostered after roster cuts this weekend. Think about that. As I said at the start of this trade, this was Pace going all in and saying we are ready to win right now. Whether he is right or not remains to be seen, but he thinks we're ready to win. And personally I do NOT think that relies solely on Trubisky. IF the defense can be elite, I think that Trubisky can be average enough to make our offense palatable with the weapons we have there now. If the offense can just be average, we have the chance to be good enough now with Mack added on defense. He was everything we needed there.
Hmm... That is definitely one angle you can take. I suspect that Pace knows the Trubisky pick is tied to his tenure with the Bears. IT either works or it doesn't. If it doesn't, he's gone. So, while I think the pickup definitely helps this team win, I don'[t see it tied to whether Pace thinks Trubisky is a a legit FQB. More, I think it signals he's going all in regardless. I keep saying the Mack pick up is great, but for the most part, will be as meaningful to Trubisky long term as signing Kyle Fuller...
Before we start sucking Pace's dong... you have to believe that part of Gruden’s thinking was, of all the teams that were asking, Gruden Would think the Bears will finish the worst... making the picks they got from the Bears higher than any of the other team
Worse than the Jets, Browns and Bills? I’m not buying. I think Mack is a Bear because they didn’t blink at the 2 first rounders or making Mack the highest paid defensive player in the history of the NFL.
I think the Bears being in the NFC is more a factor above those 3 teams. The Bears may play Oakland next year, and then won't even have a shot to play them again until 2023
