I don’t buy the logic. What if Trubisky breaks his leg? And then gets hurt again the next season? That makes this trade a failure? I don’t buy into that. Mack’s play is the only thing that decides it.
This is an aggressive move by a GM that has shown he isn’t scared to be aggressive. I’m yet to be sold on Pace...but he definitely has balls.
Yeah, I don’t see how Mack getting hurt or Trubisky sucking makes this a bad trade. If GM’s has crystal balls (insert testicle joke here) there would be no need for trades to begin with would there? The trade needs to be evaluated on it’s own merits, not tied to the successes or failures of other players.
C'mon man, not this again. You're going to make me defend Pace? Let's put this in perspective. Trubisky the jury is still out on. You can't say he got 'owned' in this trade, especially when it was reported by multiple outlets that the Browns were trying to trade up to #2 to take him after Mile Garrett. Lynch himself said he had no idea bears were going to do that and confirmed the Browns were calling him. Pace got his quarterback, not his second choice, not his third. I'm fine with that. I also think its way too early to grade this trade. If you're still mad about Marshall and Bennett, you've missed the big picture. No, value wasn't what you wanted it to be, nor I. But A--both were lockerroom cancers. It was well reported that both had mailed it in, and began throwing their teammates under the bus. Sorry, but when Marshall threw Forte under the bus, he had to go. B--you weren't going to get anything outstanding for assholes with attitude that don't listen to their coaches. GMs don't line up to get guys on the wrong side of 30 (Bennett 28 or 29) with attitude problems and histories of burning bridges. And let's be real. Marshall had 1 good year his first year with the Jets then declined. Bennett had Tom Brady throwing to him after Gronk went down with his yearly injury. He also still had issues, because he wasn't retained by NE, and a couple weeks into a new contract with the Packers he wanted out. Its like you're upset that the seating was being re-arranged on the titanic as its sinking. The bears, through a decade's worth of bad decisions, bad drafting, and bad management were going to be cellar dwellers regardless of the status of Marshall and Bennett, and both Bennett and Marshall had made careers out of burning bridges with teams, and not staying on them long, as talented as they could be. The talent the bears had at the time was over the hill, the coach they had was a putz, and a rebuild when the division improved was inevitable. And we don't need to go into how ugly it was to watch. You weren't getting anything better for either player, because if it was possible, it would have happened. These two, had they remained wouldn't have prevented the continued inevitable plunge to rock bottom. Let these two go. These weren't franchise crippling moves. These weren't the level of Herschel Walker or Ricky Williams. Mack could be, Khari Lee. You got me, cant defend it. He already had an athletic TE who couldn't catch in Fendi Onobun, or whatever his name was. Even though it was what, a 6th? He threw away a late pick, which sucks because he's shown he's a good talent evaluator and probably could have found a better contributor. With Mack, forget the prior trades, you cant base this trade on the others he's made. Judge it for what gets produced as a result. Pace gets canned if it doesn't work, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt today, a week before the season starts. We've harped that we needed more than just Floyd at the most important spot in the 3-4, the spot the bears had garbage depth at after Floyd. They got the 3rd best edge IMO in the league behind Von Miller and Myles Garrett. These players just don't become available and we got one. I'm excited, Floyd is now your 2nd best edge and you just took a top 12 defense last year and made it better.
Then we're screwed because we don't have a QB and don't have the picks to draft (or money in FA) a QB high, and the reason is because the GM put all his eggs in Khalil Mack's basket. See my above comment to BWW.
There was a reason i suggested not using the injury card excuse when judging this trade. Its weak. Give us a real reason that doesn't rely on made up injuries.
There would be no need for trades period if GM's could prioritse needs correctly and pick the right players. A GM not being able to do that does not make it ok to suddenly drop multiple years worth of 1st round picks and the biggest Defensive player contract in history(probably) on one guy. ESPECIALLY when he doesn't actually know what he has on the other side of the ball. I'm open to a solid argument in favour of this trade, not really hearing one tho. Ive heard injuries and crystal balls. Come on guys.
Your boy Cutler was the ultimate cancer pat, he stuck around. How did that work out for everyone? They weren't for sure. They were just bad decisions by a GM. That really is the only(very tiny) silver lining in this.
Mack is one of the absolute best players in the game. A game changer...an impact player. There isn’t one player in the game that can block the guy one on one. Some teams can’t handle him two on one. Akiem Hicks just got more dangerous. Leonard Floyd just got more dangerous. The Bears defense, barring injury, should be Top 5 or better after finishing 10th last year without having a good pass rush for most of the season. Need more reasons or can I stop now?
The play of Trubisky does decide the ultimate cost of where those picks situate in the next two years.
JMO buddy, but i think it partially does. They're linked. Have to be when the cost is this astronomical. Because if this doesnt pan out you have years of basically not being able to do a ton about it.
That’s not true. We’ve seen trades for QBs happen and we’ve seen starting QBs have success around the league that weren’t first round picks. The only reason Mack won’t perform is if he’s hurt. He’s too good to not make an impact.
He's definitely as close to a "sure thing" as you can get. IT is arguable that he may be the best defensive player in the NFL right now. Considering Pace's past use of picks, you cannot say that those draft picks would be anything other than crap shoots. I can see people hesitation with this based on what happened with Cutler. But, Mack is not Jay Cutler...
Did anyone here think the Bears would win more than 6-7 games before this trade? How many games can one defensive guy, albeit an amazing one, swing from the L to the W column? And, at the end of the day, it all comes back to Trubisky. If he's what we hope (and Pace obviously believes he is), then we are in a win now mode. If Pace swung and missed on Trubisky, then we're doomed to another 4-5 years (or more) of mediocrity and losing a couple #1s doesn't matter.
If anything this is another argument FOR the trade. You’ve invested a first round pick and then some in your young QB, you’ve surrounded him with weapons as much as possible. The next logical step in helping the young offense out is by massively upgrading your defense by acquiring the league’s best pass rusher, who’s only 27 years old.
I was more hoping they'd surround him with better tackles... a stud OL will make your QB turn mediocre weapons into good ones, but oh well...
Guys, I am as pumped as the rest of you, Mack is the real deal and a great player. And 3rdgen, I DO expect this to swing at least a few games into the W column. But to temper that, blang and Ev are not wrong....this is a high price tag. We don't know the player with TWO firsts I don't think there's any way it's a starter. But TWO firsts is massive, because it hampers the ability to add pieces around Trubs, how can you not see this as Pace saying we have a solid core and we're going playoffs in the next few years? It's the same thing as dropping a first rounder on the same position two years in a row and hitting on one and completely busting on the other. If we're in the same place with Pace that we're ok with two firsts because he'd blow the picks (like Angelo did with Cutler)....that's fucking depressing. And really, outside of White, he's picked- Floyd (pretty good), Trubisky (jury is out but probably isn't a complete bust), and Roquan (jury completely out). He doesn't have years of fuckups like Angelo. My expectations this year just got higher. It may not be realistic but I expect wins out of this team, period. That said, I am pumped to see this D on the field, and lets see some innovation out of the offensive guru Nagy. Lets get this shit STARTED.
