Haley showing everyone what a real head coach looks like.

I'm not going to dog a guy too hard for a preseason game. His spot is safe on the roster. I get the optics that maybe it doesn't jive 100% with his speech "s**t is contagious, bruh" but at the same time, this isn't Pittsburgh Week 1 in the fourth. I also think that was part of the theme of the last episode of Hard Knocks - Hue was giving a speech early on (maybe even to start) about guys taking plays, moments, snaps off and how that wasn't excusable.

lol! Superman 2? really? That's funny...I guess you're right though. Intense drama.

Probably because they never really explained this:

I've seen the movie, but honestly don't remember it at all. This was a reference to Office Space which is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have a red Swingline stapler on my desk as tribute, and used to have the same Initech coffee cup that Bill Lumberg (Gary Cole) has throughout the movie.

I know that the prudent thing to do is to start Tyrod, so Baker isn't rushed into service, but I'm not so certain that right now Taylor gives us the best chance to win the game. Jus sayin...Don't wanna stir controversy. I get why we are going with Tyrod, but Mayfield looks like he is ready to handle whatever comes his way. I know I'm an insane homer that knows nothing, but that kid has the ability to process the game like no rookie I've ever seen. The future is very bright for the Browns, because Baker is going to be a superstar in this league. His pocket awareness and accuracy and ability to command the offense, at this stage of his career, are simply lights out. Dude has the arm strength. He has the touch. He can rifle it through a wall. I'm very excited about Browns football like I haven't been in a very long time. We've seen veteran QB's come to Cleveland and not look half as comfortable as Baker Mayfield does already....

I don't think Tyrod can survive even one bad half of football...No knock on him. That's just how impressive Mayfield has been.

Ultimately, it's easier to turn to the rookie than it is to go back to a veteran. If Mayfield starts right away and they go 0-8 or something ridiculous like they did under Kizer, you're back in the situation where you're head coach (who's 1-31 as of right now) is panicking and yanking QBs from the lineup trying desperately to get that first win.

If Taylor starts and does poorly, you can turn to the rookie.

On other thing to note is that this still just the preseason. There is a different level of intensity and speed to the game in the regular season. Tyrod, and his eight years of experience, will be better prepared for that than Mayfield will.

As Baker Mayfield's Hype-Man™, I'm okay with Tyrod starting the season.

    1,000% ^^^^^^^^

@TopDawg I agree with you that Baker may have already passed Tyrod...and I agree with you that on skill level, he may already give them the best chance to win a game...

That said, there is still things that he can learn from Tyrod before he has to have the weight of the franchise on his shoulders about the pro game and game week/weekend/day to learn before jumping in. As @SAS has already stated, the real thing is a far cry from preseason. I just want the kid to have EVERY opportunity to be 100% prepared for this game. I think Tyrod Taylor gives him the opportunity that some other rookies don't get. Now, 5 weeks in, 7 weeks in or 2019. Once he has everything he needs to be successful, I am fully ready to root him on come Sunday afternoon.

I'm a Baker geek...just want him to succeed at the highest level when his chance comes.

    (moved from Game #4 thread...)

    Final 53
    (Just one man's take...)

    QB (3): Taylor, Mayfield, Stanton
    RB (3): Hyde, Chubb, Johnson
    FB (1): Vitale
WR (6): Landry, Gordon, Callaway, Higgins, Ratley, Board
    TE (3): Njoku, Fells, DeValve
    LT (2): Bitonio, Harrison
    LG (2): Corbett, Gennessy
    C (1): Tretter
    RG (2): Zeitler, Drango
    RT (2): Hubbard, Robinson

    Offense: 25

    LDE (2): Ogbah, Nassib
DT (4): Ogunjobi, Coley, Brantley, Meder
    RDE (3): Garrett, Orchard, Thomas
    WLB (2): Kirksey, Avery
    MLB (2): Schobert, Currie
SLB (2): Collins Sr., Burgess Jr.
CB (5): Ward, Mitchell, Carrie, Gaines, Boddy-Calhouhn,
    S (3): Randall, Peppers, Kindred

    Defense: 25

    K (1): Gonzalez
    P (1): Colquitt
    LS (1): Hughlett

    Specialists: 3

    Practice Squad:
    QB: Roback
    RB: Dayes
    WR: Willies
    TE: Cajuste
    OL: DiLario
    DT: Faulk, Eukale
    DB: Thomas, Jordan, Sankkoh

    "Surprise" Cuts:
    • Shon Coleman: the 2018 Cody Kessler - started out as first team and whiffed all the way to a cut off the roster

    • Chris Smith: color me unimpressed... signed in the offseason from Cincinnati but did nothing in the preseason and played through the third quarter in the fourth preseason game (I tuned out in Q4... he could have still been going)
Now... while I do think they'll be scouring the waiver wire for gems, I don't think they'll have an immediate place on the final 53 man roster, so anyone picked up would have to be a practice squad eligible player. They'll make some roster moves later to get that spot ready for Dez, too.

This happens and I predict a surprise retirement announcement from Ben Roethsliberger.

I don't think there's any way they are gonna slip Dayes to the practice squad. He's not making it through waivers....

I know. I completely get why they are starting Taylor week one...Just pointing out how impressive the young lad has been. Baker has certainly shown us that it's only a matter of time before the Cleveland Browns are his team.

Yes he has. But, please keep in mind he has yet had the opportunity to show what he is capable of against a real live NFL defense that is something other than vanilla.

One can add vodka to fruit juice and sell it as wine. Its quite another thing to add yeast and let the wine make itself over time.
