I believe the Refs arnt real sure as to what to call in the first place. They have too much judgement and discretion to make for their own sakes. The helmet/head tackling calls were actually down this weekend in comparison to the first 2 weekends... I think this may be an indicator that when the season starts only the most blatant of blatant calls will be made. Im not sold that on-field Refs can actually discern what constitutes a legal/safe/by the book, tackle. In other words... if we are lucky, they'll let these guys continue to hit unless there is injury or intent that is absolutely obvious. Lets hope so anyway.
Indeed, because it's a hefty penalty. A dicey call going against one team with a more clear call NOT being made against the other team would be enough to swing the outcome of a lot of games. If they don't get it together on the consistency, we're in for a bad season.
There was a new training video for the referees released this past week. That is probably the most significant reason why the calls were down in week 3. According to how the rule was originally written, I think they felt they needed to make the calls they did in week 1 and week 2. I think they took a look at all the calls that were made, put them on film and said, "ok...this is an obvious call, these are not what the rule was intended for, etc..." I'm also willing to bet they gave them a clear, if you don't have a clear call on a play concerning the rule, don't call it, the league will review hits based on franchise involvement and they can fine them, or whatever, later. Make sure it is in line with the rule completely or do not call it. I do think it will make the players think about how they tackle and in the long run make for a safer sport overall. I just don't want to see the perfect form tackle that has the guys head up, but knock the snot out of him with his shoulder pads, go away.
With all of these TD celebrations now spilling over into small parties for picking off a pass or a fumble recovery, why isn’t anyone doing The Safety Dance after scoring one for their team? I want to see a 300 lbs DT doing the fucking Safety Dance. Regarding the new rules, playing defense is getting harder in the NFL. I hope the pay scale reflects as much. Penalties have always been at the officials’ discretion but it seems we’ll have more arbitrary calls than ever, if this preseason is an indicator.
^^ i understand leading with the head, but what about a good old fashion arm tackle ? like in the backyard...arms extended outward and hold onto the guy's legs until he falls down ? why does it have to be about leading with the head ??
Head contact is going to happen. Todays speed dictates that. If you dive at a player and attempt to wrap him up, your head still gets involved. Arm tackling doesn't work and is not possible to do in the NFL, only backyards and sand-lots.
"Arm tackling" is not the same as the proper way with your shoulder first. It's like tackling with your head but needing better aim.
What makes me laugh is that players are blaming the new rule for Marqise Lee's injury. Funny thing is that on the play the tackler was flagged for an illegal hit. LMAO
So, to re-iterate: No head No horse collar No knees No part of the body period, if the defender leads with his head, even if his head doesn't make contact with the offensive player So essentially, every defender must arm tackle, but only if they grab the offensive guys arm, chest, hair or ankles...Hair is still legal, right?
Marqise Lee will miss entire season with knee injury... It looked like Jaguars wide receiver Marqise Lee suffered a significant knee injury when he needed to be carted off the field during Saturday’s game against the Falcons and that feeling was confirmed on Monday. Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said that Lee will have surgery to repair the injury to his knee and miss the entire 2018 season after being placed on injured reserve. Lee’s loss comes a little more than five months after he signed a four-year contract to remain with the team that made him a 2014 second-round pick. He caught 56 passes for 702 yards and three touchdowns last season. Dede Westbrook, Keelan Cole, Donte Moncrief and second-round pick D.J. Chark remain on hand for the Jaguars. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that Marrone said he was “comfortable” with the current group of receivers when asked if the team would consider signing Dez Bryant. (PFT)
Why the LMAO? You're missing Ramsey's point. It wasn't an attempt at a dirty play. The defender tried to go in and wrap the legs, which Ramsey (as a fellow DB) was saying the rules are encouraging (to the point of almost forcing) DBs to do in that situation.
Hue Jackson: Josh Gordon won’t be a starter Week One... Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon might be on the field when Cleveland opens its regular season, but he won’t be a starter. Head coach Hue Jackson said today that he has ruled out starting Gordon, who missed training camp because he needed to focus on his mental health and only recently returned to the team. Of course, the distinction between “starting” and not can be fairly meaningless: It really just means Gordon won’t be on the field for the first play. It’s still possible that Gordon will be the Browns’ No. 1 receiver in the opener against the Steelers, that he’ll be on the field for more snaps than any other receiver and that he’ll get more passes thrown his way than any other receiver. If he’s healthy both mentally and physically, Gordon is the Browns’ best wide receiver, and the Browns would be wise to use him that way. He might not start, but if he’s ready to play, it’s hard to believe the Browns won’t run their passing offense through him. (PFT)
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Odell Beckham Jr. of the New York Giants is now the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver. A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Monday the team agreed to a five-year contract extension with the three-time Pro Bowler. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Giants have not announced the deal, which comes less than two weeks before the season opener against Jacksonville. While terms were not disclosed, the deal with the 25-year-old, 2014 first-rounder is worth about $95 million with $65 million guaranteed. Beckham’s $19 million average salary would top the $17 million earned by Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers. His $95 million deal also tops the $82.5 million deal receiver Mike Evans has with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Beckham, who missed most of last season with a broken left ankle, was scheduled to make $8.4 million in the final year of his rookie contract. In his first four seasons, Beckham has caught 313 passes for 4,424 yards and 38 touchdowns.
I’m sorry that’s overpaying to the extreme...I really feel he is overrated, he’s been injured a lot and teams have been able to take him away.
Now the Steelers need to do the right thing and raise Antonio Brown up above this clown. No way should Jr make more than AB.
