what about Ken Dryden then ? so he's a douchebag too for wanting a change in the league but the NFL isn't wrong or douchebags for changing the rules on tackling to avoid concussions? i guess all those NFL players who want to donate their brains for CTE damage are douchebags too to prove how violent their game is to warrant changes to it. so to have hockey you must have blindside hits over the middle of the ice? you couldn't play hockey without it? isn't the 1 top Canadien Junior League a non-check league? was the league the same 70 yrs ago with the checking it has now? i doubt it.

Red, Lindros' career ended early for the reckless he played and the 10+ concussions he suffered. his brother got hit once severely and was never the same again and was out of hockey by the time he was 20. so calling for safety for the current and future players of the game and the game itself is being a douchebag considering what he suffered, his brother and countless others, yeah ok.

No contact hockey and no contact football is not watchable. I agree with the articles use of body armor as a weapon, but the NHL fines and suspends for head shots. He is still a douchebag.

Hockey without hitting would look a bit like the all-star game, can't have it.

Look at red doubling down on the big E.

EDINA, Minn. -- David Backes expects things to be quite different for himself and the Boston Bruins this season.

"We had a lot of freak injuries, a lot of missed time that was kind of one-off type instances," the 34-year-old forward said Wednesday between games at Da Beauty League, a 4-on-4 summer league for players with connections to Minnesota. "So I'm looking forward to a full season, getting in the trenches, getting in some games and getting deep in the [Stanley Cup] Playoffs.

"There's no doubt in my mind, I'd put money on it, that this year is better."

I don't think anyone is a douchebag for wanting changes for the safety of the players. what if this was Wayne Gretzky, Mario or Bobby Orr behind this initiative - are they still douchebags too?

  12. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

Yes... but Orr would never say that.

how do you know? lindros was more physical than orr was and he wants change. dryden is behind it too, so ... ?

I don't put stock into what Lindros or Dryden say to be blunt. I know Bobby and a million others wouldn't play the sissy card like some of these guys are.

But one thing the eight-time Norris Trophy-winner doesn’t want to change is fighting. Orr wants it to remain part of the game.

In the book, he uses the example of the Montreal Canadiens having John Ferguson to keep the peace but also to play good, solid hockey.

"If a player is trying to intimidate a skilled player on your team, what do we want? We want our skilled players playing, so we shouldn’t be doing that," said Orr, who had 42 fights in the NHL according to HockeyFights.com. "My stand on fighting is if we eliminate it completely, that fear of getting beat up is a great deterrent. We don’t need guys running around poking and using their stick and hitting (players) that don’t normally hit."

Orr supports eliminating staged fights pre-planned at the drop of the puck off a face-off and those that follow clean hits. He wants the onus to be on officials to know the tone of a game and decide whether to give out extra penalties depending on the situation.

But that’s with fighting serving as a deterrent.

"Let the players police that ice," Orr said. "They’ll straighten it out. There’ll be an understanding."

Orr said the game as it is now is in "great shape" because of the depth of talent throughout the league. His concerns have to do with those talented players being victimized by cheap or dirty hits or goaded into dropping the gloves.

"We want our skilled players playing, and you can’t be running around trying to intimidate them to get them off the game, get them off the ice," he said. "Sidney Crosby, our greatest player, I don’t want to see Sidney Crosby in the penalty box. I don’t want to see Sidney Crosby hurt. I want to see Sidney Crosby play. He’s our best player. We need our best players playing all the time."

That's the Bobby Orr I love!

STOCKHOLM -- Patrik Laine said he is not concerned about the lack of significant discussions with the Winnipeg Jets this offseason regarding a contract extension.

The 20-year-old forward has one season remaining on his three-year, entry-level contract and said he would love to play for the Jets far beyond that and is willing to be patient.

"It's not something we need to hurry because I still have a contract," Laine said Thursday during the NHL European Player Media Tour. "But obviously that's something I want to do at some point and they want to do. But there's no rush."

Laine wouldn't discuss specifics about the talks between his agent, Mike Liut, and the Jets, but said there have been no major discussions. If he needs to wait until after the season to get a deal done, Laine said he is fine with that. He can be a restricted free agent after this season.

"I really don't care," Laine said. "There's no rush, really. I can do it next summer or this summer. I don't mind."

Laine, the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, made it clear he's happy with the direction the Jets are headed and would sign with them long term. Winnipeg (52-20-10) finished second in the Central Division last season and reached the Western Conference Final, which it lost to the Vegas Golden Knights in five games.

Laine was a big part of Winnipeg's success; he was second in the NHL with 44 goals last season, behind Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin, who scored 49. Laine scored 36 goals as an 18-year-old rookie in 2016-17.

I find this perplexing. It just seems odd to me that the Jets would play games with this guy especially after the season and numbers he just put up. I'd be all over rapping this guy up long term while he's still humble, lol.

Laine has a great attitude, but the Jets better jump on it.

The sissy card over player safety ? wow Will that says it all. so much for the safety of the players then. you want the blindside hits, the cheapshots and everything else the game has to offer now. basically hockey with goon tactics in it. resurrect the Broad Street Bullies then or the Hanson brothers, because anything else is just sissy hockey. I guess Olympic hockey is sissy hockey then?

Eric Lindros(issy) wants no contact hockey. Illegal contact is already in place for penalties, fines and suspensions.
