Almost forgot... today is 8/7 and you know what that means? Happy Birthday to the best hockey player on the planet.

    Crosby is 31 today.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Gretzky trade to LA, where were you?

If nothing else it proved that anyone can be traded, except auston matthews of course.

in my parent's living room watching it on espn. we had cable tv back then ! i was shocked as a longtime fan. i never thought he would be traded. i didn't know the backstory and schematics back then. to me it was more of a shock - how do you trade the greatest hockey player to ever play for Jimmy Carson and some others?

The fk I remember where I was, all I remember is seeing him cry on tv with that 80s do. Speaking of which, the summer of '88 was pretty wild.

I'm driving around this morning looking for my bank when I heard about the gretzky anniversary on the radio. I find the bank which is inside a shopping mall.

As I'm in there, it dawns on me that I worked in this mall in the summer of '85, 33 years ago.
I see this kid in one of those little booths selling cell phones.
I say, "I know this sounds crazy", he says, "no, tell me".
"Would you believe me if I told you I worked here 33 years ago?"
He says, "Yeah, I believe it, I wasn't even born then".
    That's the moment I aged 33 years.lol

Summer of 88... USAF. I was at Grissom AFB in the middle of nowhere Indiana. I was at the starting point of life-long friendships with my 2 Fly Boy homies.

i read a good hypothetical somewhere and i wonder what you guys think. taking age and contract status in to account, would you trade
    Auston Matthews-20 (1 yr, $925k RFA)
    for
    Nathan MacKinnon- 22 (5yrs, $6.3 per)

Nathan peaked last year at 97 pts, matthews has never really had a down year yet.
In a salary cap era, if Mackinnon could keep putting up 97 pt seasons, then at $6,3M I would take him over matthews.

It would be a gamble though, just on numbers alone, he's worth more than matthews, if he's getting 97 pts for $6.3M.

    Consistency is the key.

That's a tough one, but I wouldn't do it... id keep Mathews. Both would be ideal to have, lol, but that kind of trade is a gamble all the way. Working out a deal to keep Mathews around might be tricky, but id like to see what kind of numbers Mathews is capable of.

I don't know Macks overall game, but if he were to put up similar numbers for half the cost, you can't say no.

thats kind of where Im at too. Such a team friendly deal Mackinnon signed.
using these parameters there arent many Id trade AM for but NM would be one.

Mack got paid low because 4 out of his 5 years were at less than a PPG. If his next five years matches Matthews, then at 27 he'll be earning the same as AM.

If you take Mack and he reverts back to his career stats and matthews peaks to over a PPG, then the gamble blows up.

depending on price. if Matthews slightly out performs Mackinnon at twice the cost the value is much greater for Mackinnon

Definitely, at 27 Macks deal will be over $10M if he keeps pace. Then there's playoff performance to look at, so far AM is doing poorly.

Has MacKinnon proven himself? He up'd his scoring by over 40 points from the 16/17 season and was average outside of last season and his rookie season. I think he is still a gamble/risk also until he proves me wrong this season.

He's got some good line-mates to play with now too.

By the way... 2 blondes were headed to Disneyland. When they got to Florida, the highway sign said 'Disneyland Left'. They both began to cry and turned around and went home.
