Saw that yesterday. Very sad indeed. I'm not surprised as I do recall something about his illness earlier this year. RIP Tom.
Usually when players report to training camp, the time of year for checking police logs has passed. But with the Browns, and Antonio Callaway, nothing should be considered simple. According to Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland, the rookie wide receiver was stopped for a traffic violation Sunday at 2:59 a.m. and cited for marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license. The next day, the Browns promoted him to the starting lineup. Callaway’s talent at Florida was never questioned, but he slipped to the fourth round of this year’s draft after a positive drug test at the Scouting Combine (along with other problems that left him off the team last year). But he promised to keep himself on the straight and narrow, saying he was not going to let General Manager John Dorsey down for picking him. According to the police report, Callaway’s vehicle was stopped in the middle of the night after he failed to yield to oncoming traffic while making a turn. Officers realized he had a suspended license and “a small amount” of marijuana under the seat (Note: this is where cops always look for the weed). Deputy Chief John Janowski said the amount of marijuana was small enough to be considered a minor misdemeanor in Ohio. That doesn’t mean he’s not at risk from the NFL, which doesn’t always wait for charges, and has shown a willingness to levy outsized penalties for marijuana (compared to, say domestic violence).
The 2016 revised substance abuse program requires 4 failed tests before being suspended. If they give him a test and he passes, he may not even get his first referral to a abuse program, which is the first step. Second step is a 2 game check fine, third step is four game check fine, fourth step is 4 game suspension, fifth step is a 10 game suspension, sixth is a one year banishment. Under these terms, Josh Gordon would have never received a suspension as the parts per million was also changed from 15ppm to 50ppm. Although EXTREMELY stupid, unless he has had previous failed tests that haven't been disclosed, he will not miss a single practice or game due to this misdemeanor.
Wait a minute! He failed his dixie cup test at the fucking NFL combine !!! (A diluted sample counts as a fail regardless of the PPM threshold, does it not?) 1st round talent with an Intramural mentality. And we TRADED UP for this mental midget.
OK, so if he failed another test then he would be fined the equivalent of two game checks, still not suspended. The rules have become rather relaxed since Gordon's failures. I'm not condoning anything, but unless he fails a test, this "possession" may not even be an infraction.
His argument, which doesn't hold much diluted water, was that "a buddy was driving his car in Florida and he just had it shipped to Cleveland - didn't know there was weed in it". Failing a drug test at the Combine just means he would be recommended to the substance abuse program. They usually keep a lid on when folks enter that, but chances are he's in it. Like @IrishDawg42 said, that's one strike. This, if he's punished for it, would be two. He's up to two-games worth of fines and still has two more to go before we hit suspensions. Yes, he's clearly an idiot. Hopefully, this serves as a wake-up call. The majority of players are tested during training camp... if Callaway was using, it would have probably broken by now. The fact that he hasn't (at least as of this posting) does lend some credibility to his story. If he can provide proof of the car shipment and a clean test, he should be fine. And that testing window is for players not in the substance program... I believe it's much more frequently (after even only one offense) for those in it.

I watched my first ever episode of Hard Knocks last night. The show is pretty well put together. I came away from it thinking: Hue does deserve a full reset on his coaching clock Christian Kirksey is a leader After Jarvis Landry's speech I popped up, ran through the wall straight to the hardware store to buy materials to fix the wall, ran home carrying said materials, fixed the wall, then ran through it again. This guy is the real deal. Todd Haley might have a strong personality, but he appears (so far) to know his place as the OC. Gregggggg Williams does and says Greggggg Williams things.
Not sure what to say this morning...I don't want to give away any spoilers for those who are waiting to watch Hard Knocks on demand... I'll just say this...My expectations for 2018 are lowered. I now expect 4-6 wins on the year...and I also expect a new HC in 2019.
That was my first ever episode, too. At first, I thought they focused too much on a very personal moment of Hue's as he dealt with the loss of his mother. Then, after sleeping on it, I'm glad they included it. All the other shots showed him coaching. By including that personal moment, it showed he is human with human emotions.
