Im not ignorant or lazy... for every knock on Meyer there are positives also. I think he never has and never will get the benefit of the doubt by some because of who is and the winning programs he has coached.

Discernment is key when listening to what is reported on the web, just as much as listening to the news media or a friend.

Meyer is no angel, that I know, but he may and I stress may be innocent in this particular case... who knows?

Urban Meyer is a great football coach. He's a scumbag of a human being. I don't care what programs he's coached, or whether he's won or lost. This is not an "us against them" thing.

I don't understand how we're going backwards, here. His past indiscretions have been proven and corroborated. These are not just "internet rumors". I don't understand what's happening here.

Will - with the proof so far and text messages, do you really think he had no idea of what his exWR Coach did to his ex-wife?

  4. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

ok... I don't know what he knows, all right?

Right. And we may never know. If his wife told him in conversation, but there's no written proof that she did, and they both testify that she didn't... well, he gets away with it. However, if there is every other piece of evidence, save for the smoking gun in writing that says he knew, well... I think it's both likely and not enough for him to get the benefit of the doubt, given his history. Apparently, there are plenty who disagree, including those that think his well-proven track record and factual history is made up.

I have never liked Meyer. Aaron Hernandez was running a mafia like gang under his watch at Florida.

I'm not going to rub noses into the statements made today by Smith and Urban Meyer, and the ramifications of them. I'll just say this:

    A. Consider the statements made and what possibilities they portend
    B. Consider what that says about Meyer and Ohio State
    C. Consider what that says about yourself, if you were one of the people defending Meyer / Ohio State

This is important. This is not "us vs them", where it's more important to be upset at people, rather than learn something. This is an opportunity to grow, and do the right thing in reaction to this. Hopefully that's what happens.

I love when we have people in here JUDGING us from a distance over the internet...

Yet they make statements like this on another thread:

You get into confrontations, and by your demeanor on here I take that as they could become physical altercations.

So, you are the "type" of person who:
    A) Judges others prolifically
    B) Has MANY MANY character flaws of your own
    C) chooses to ignore your own advice

So, in short, do as I say, not as I do... a hypocrite at it's finest.

Holy fuck, Irish. I don't know what deep end you went off of, but you're gonna want to start swimming back to shore.

Maybe I should've also added to my original statement, just to be distinctly clear for everyone: "none of this is personal. This is about examining your reaction to this situation and how it reflects on you, not about anyone else". Maybe that would've helped. But maybe this will help in your specific instance, Irish, addressing your dive from the shores of sanity...

Nevermind the ridiculous leap of a presumption you've made that I meant to say that I'm starting fist fights every weekend. Nevermind that it has nothing to do with those defending Urban Meyer and Ohio State against these allegations, including but not limited to trying to invalidate claims made by the victim. Nevermind you taking offense to the very principle of someone judging you via the Internet, flying in the face of everything you've said in this thread, including the very post in which you took that offense.

Nevermind all that, and so much more. Let's pretend that you're right. Fuck it - let's say you're right, I'm a giant hypocrite, I judge people and I start fistfights, and...

None of that matters. What matters is how you reacted to this situation, and jumped to the defense of Urban Meyer and Ohio State to the extent that you did. What matters is what kind of person you want to be, and what kind of person you clearly displayed yourself to be. Maybe it's just a bad moment, a bad judgement, or anything of the sort. That's fine. Think about it, own up to it, and be better. That's what being a good human being is about, and this is such a wonderfully prime opportunity to do that.

You can turn this into an "us against them" thing, Irish. You can take this as a personal attack on you, and dig your heels in, and never reflect on any of this in a critical, constructive manner. Or, you can stop to think about it, own up to it, and never have to worry about it again.

You can be the guy defending Meyer and Ohio State for the rest of your life, or you can be the guy on the right side of history; the right side of human decency. It's up to you. I'm so desperately hoping you'll be a big man about this, and choose the mature, healthy, constructive option. I've got my fingers crossed.

Edit: late Friday night, I seemed to type "Woods" instead of "Smith", referring to Zach Smith. No idea where that came from. I think we all knew what I meant, but I want to make sure it's corrected.

Raise your hand if you find the rally to defend Urban Meyer and those who took part in it disgusting.

Actually, it's better if we figure out who doesn't feel that way. I think that's the real issue, in all of this. That's the part worth discussing, and working on.

If no charges are filed and no arrest are made why is it Urban Meyers responsibility to "police" smith by firing him?

  17. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

Urban, from all accounts including his own, knew that Zach Smith was abusing his wife. He says that he told his superiors, and that was the extent of his involvement (not including publicly lying about it). However, conflicting testimony says that his superiors already knew.

Regardless, not only was Zach Smith not fired (and I wasn't necessarily asking for him to be), there was nothing done about the situation in any way, shape, or form. Meyer abdicated all responsibility, despite being in the best position to do anything about it. Zach Smith was fired once it became apparent that the program was going to get exposed, and that they'd have to answer for why this action wasn't taken earlier.

The question I posed in the quoted post was not, "Why was it Urban's responsibility" (P.S. it's because he's the head of the program, the same way your boss is responsible for you), but rather, "Why were people out defending him"? Moreover, why did Zach Smith get fired at all? If the program thinks it was apt to fire him, why not do it when the issues were made apparent to them, rather than when it was made apparent to the public? But I think we both know there aren't good answers, here. At least, not if you're trying to defend Urban or the Ohio State program.

He's guilty if you hate him and the Buckeyes, lets see, if you like him or are a fan of the Buckeyes.

    Objectivity is dead.

  20. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

Will, based on his and others' testimony, he is at the very least guilty of gross negligence as it concerned spousal abuse from one of his staff. He knew about it, he did nothing about it, and he lied about it. That's literally the best case scenario, here, based on his very words. If you're being objective, you already know that.
