And yet The Godfather won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for screenplay. Gone With the Wind won an Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay. Opening scene in Saving private Ryan? Brilliant stuff. But if you don't think the opening scene of The Godfather wasn't a classic - not only taking the time to get all the main characters introduced, but to give critical insights into their character - I think you're missing something.
look axe. the movie does that, but many parts of it are dragged out. and why wasn't Michael in a tuxedo? i see that poster all over the place and it's silly. everyone in a tux or dress but him. to me it's not a brilliant piece of movie making. the book's author Mario Puzo co-wrote the screenplay, so Coppola had a lot of help sculpting the movie into a great movie. the whole middle when Michael flees to Italy and gets married only to have his new bride killed in a car bomb meant for him was just silly to me. it's so out of place. so he killed a cop and a head of a mob family, like he was the first one ? so the death of his new bride makes him tougher? then he goes back to the US and seeks out Kay Adams? just very odd. I think the Godfather is a top 7 movie of all-time, but many of my Italian South Philly friends think its the greatest movie ever made. i wouldn't go that far. and I really didn't like the Godfather part II.
Are you serious with this...? That's part of the story-telling, Cat - that Michael at that time was NOT part of what the "family" was about. He enlisted when the war broke out, against everyone's wishes. He went to college (Sonny and Fredo didn't). He dated a Protestant girl. Wearing his uniform showed his commitment to America and the ideals of post-war America - and NOT a commitment to his family's criminal side. 1) He HAD to flee - they could pretty much figure out WHO killed McCloskey and Sollozzo. What's he gonna do - wait around the house for the cops to come? 2) It wasn't the death of Appolonia that made him "tougher" - he had already committed to the family when he killed McCloskey and Sollozzo. 3) "Family" (as in wife, relatives) is very important in mafia culture, which is why he sought out Kay Adams again
The best war movie is A Bridge Too Far. Lots of action, just about everybody’s favorite actors were in it. They had to have the largest selection of well known actors I have ever seen in one movie.
The problem with saying gone with the wind is not a movie making experience is judging it by today's standards. When it was released in 1939 it was something special. In 2060 people will not be talking about Saving Private Ryan as a movie making experience either.
true. for the times, it was huge and i think it's still the #1 movie based on ticket sales with adjusted inflation. to me citizen kane is a movie making experience over the Godfather. doesn't make it a better movie. just how it was made. by 2060 movies will be a download to the machine in our wrists like the Jetsons. lol.
GOOD SAMARITAN - Good premise, but lame execution and explanation of the villain. kind of a lame ending too. bummer.
I Love You Again - Rom-com fluff with William Powell and Myrna Loy. Desk Set - A computer threatens to replace a research staff. Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn.
double feature -- Mission Impossible: Fallout - tons of action and crazy stunts. plot was a little confusing and the big twist wasn't that big by the end of the movie. i still wish Tom Cruise would go back to drama movies, but these movies still make money. decent overall. B+ The Meg - wow. Thank God I saw it for free. I don't know what's worse - Jaws 2, 3, IV, Sharknado or this movie. Idiotic premise and for being a MEG, many shark scenes he doesn't look that big. In others he does. Decent action scenes, but not really as scary as i thought it would be. It's not like seeing Jaws for the first time and jumping out of my theater seat. it was just ok and more laughable than anything. C+
I saw Jaws the day it came out. Oh shit, jumping out of the seat just doesn’t do it justice. They had to get a scissors lift to pry everyone’s head out of the ceiling. I have never seen people jump like that at any other movie in my life.
