Vikings center Pat Elflein isn’t quite ready to practice.

The Vikings announced on Wednesday that Elflein has been placed on the physically unable to perform list. Elflein broke his ankle during the NFC Championship Game in January and did not participate in the team’s offseason program as he recovered from surgery.

Elflein is eligible to begin practicing whenever the Vikings deem him ready and activate him from the PUP list.

Elflein was a third-round pick in 2017 and jumped right into the starting lineup for the NFC North champs. He missed two games in the final stretch of the season with a shoulder injury, but otherwise was part of a much improved offensive line in Minnesota during his rookie year.

I agree, Badd Man... Im still looking forward to his play, he's got a boatload of potential and raw talent. I think he'll be ok.

Lets hope the Vikings can keep that o-line healthy and in tack.

Dalvin Cook full go for training camp...

Vikings running back Dalvin Cook is “full-go” for the start of training camp, Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer-Press reports.

It’s not a surprise given Vikings athletic trainer Eric Sugarman said in April that Cook had “knocked his rehab out of the park.”

Cook got limited work during the offseason, and the Vikings have no concern about his availability for the season opener.

Cook tore the ACL in his left knee in Week 4, ending his rookie season on injured reserve after 354 rushing yards.

The Vikings have big plans for him this season. (PFT)

Minnesota Vikings: The right side of the line...

We're starting in Minnesota with a whole half (OK, math wizards, two-fifths) of the offensive line, because versatility is king and there's a lot to sort out.

Determining how these purple-clad blockers line up begins with the right guard position, which is currently the home of a large void thanks to the retirement of Joe Berger. Minnesota drafted his ideal successor in Brian O'Neill, but hedged against it by signing veteran swing lineman Tom Compton. Danny Isidora might also claim ownership of the starting job, which becomes more likely if O'Neill ends up starting at right tackle. Or Mike Remmers could start there, sliding O'Neill to guard. Not to be forgotten, Rashod Hill also could make some noise as a starter or remain for depth. There are a lot of possibilities here with no clear-cut answer.

If I'm looking at it now, I see Remmers starting at tackle with O'Neill ready to take his job at the first sign of weakness. Isidora and Compton battle it out inside, and Hill backs everyone up. An opening-weekend group of Reiff-Easton-Elflein-Compton-Remmers could very quickly become Reiff-Easton-Elflein-Remmers-O'Neill. Or Elflein-Isidora-O'Neill. See why this is such a big problem?!

This is why we have training camp, and to the credit of general manager Rick Spielman, the Vikings have multiple options from which to choose. This isn't a matter of a lack of talent, just a matter of assigning it. Many other teams would like to have that problem.

Why this arrives first in this piece is simple to see: Minnesota's fully guaranteed messiah at quarterback needs protection. The good part: The Vikings have the most important positions -- left tackle and center -- very much figured out. (NFL.com)

Vikings RB Dalvin Cook sheds knee brace before camp...

Dalvin Cook opened his rookie campaign on fire. Through three games, the Minnesota Vikings' running back was on pace to earn more than 1,500 rushing yards -- which would have easily led the league.

    Then his ACL gave out.

The second-year running back reported to training camp this week healthy and ready to be a full participant after the Vikings brought him along slowly this offseason. Cook even shed the knee brace.
"I really got comfortable [without the brace] over the offseason," Cook said, via the team's official website. "I told myself, 'I know the work I put in, I'm going to test it out before I get back to camp,' so I tested it out and felt comfortable with it. I just went forward and let [Vikings director of sports medicine Eric Sugarman] and the training staff know that I wasn't going to be wearing it. They are comfortable with it as long as I was comfortable with it."

In just three and a half games as a rookie, Cook showed the ability to be a workhorse runner with pass-catching ability.

New offensive coordinator John DeFilippo likes what he's seen in limited time with Cook.

"He looks really good," said DeFilippo, who was hired this offseason. "Looking forward to him getting the pads on and seeing where Dalvin is at. We expect him to be full-go."

While Latavius Murray might spell Cook on some early downs, expect the second-year back to become a three-down workhorse. One of the key aspects for young backs in earning that every-down role is pass protection, where most first- and second-year players struggle. DeFilippo gave Cook a glowing review in that area.

"He got in to the blitz period yesterday, and he was assignment perfect," DeFilippo said of Cook. "I think that when you see a young player that understands protections the way he does at an early age, I think that's really unique. Obviously he has the pass-catching ability that we've all seen, but a lot of times when you play that running back position, I think pass protection sometimes gets overlooked."

If Cook starts the season healthy, the Vikings will own difference-making weapons at every level of the offense.

After years of working without a running game in Washington, Kirk Cousins will finally have a franchise back lining up behind him. (NFL.com)

Vikings make Clancy Barone, Andrew Janocko co-offensive line coaches...

The sudden passing of Vikings offensive line coach Tony Sparano left the team with an opening at a key staff position. The Vikings will fill it with a pair of coaches.

The Vikings have announced that Clancy Barone and Andrew Janocko will serve as co-offensive line coaches. Barone previously served as the team’s tight ends coach. Janocko had been the assistant offensive line coach.

Former Raiders offensive coordinator Todd Downing will replace Barone as the tight ends coach. He previously spent 2001 through 2005 with the Vikings, in a variety of roles.

Coach Mike Zimmer, a defensive specialist, told PFT on Saturday that he’ll likely spend a extra time on the offensive side of the ball this year, due to the absence of Sparano. John DeFillippo is the team’s new offensive coordinator, replacing new Giants coach Pat Shurmur.

Dalvin Cook feels ready to deliver a hit...

Vikings running back Dalvin Cook was given the green light for full practice heading into camp and he was feeling comfortable enough about his recovery from a torn ACL that he ditched his knee brace.

Given that confidence, it’s not surprise that Cook is ready to take the next step in his return to the field. The team will be wearing full pads for Monday’s practice and Cook showed no reticence about what lies ahead when he was asked if he’s set to take a hit.

“I’m ready to deliver it,” Cook said, via Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “That’s what I’m ready to do. That’s my mind-set, man. I’m going to go out there and play and be me. I know my knee is fixed. I know I’m healed up. Put the time in, go out there and play.”

The Vikings haven’t laid out a plan for the first preseason game at this point, but Cook said he hopes to be on the field against the Broncos on August 11 for his first game action since Week 4 of last season. (PFT)

Vikings closing in on Stefon Diggs extension...

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs said in June that he’d be happy to get a contract extension with the Vikings, but that his main focus would be on football this summer.

It appears Diggs will be smiling while going about his business on the field pretty soon. According to multiple reports, the Vikings are closing in on an extension that will keep Diggs in Minnesota. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that it is set to be a five-year extension and that Diggs is expected to sign it on Tuesday.

Diggs was a fifth-round pick in 2015 and has racked up 200 catches for 2,472 yards and 15 touchdowns over his first three seasons. That’s made him a good partner for Adam Thielen at receiver for the Vikings and both players will now be signed through at least the 2021 season.

With Diggs, defensive end Danielle Hunter and linebacker Eric Kendricks getting new deals, the Vikings are left with linebacker Anthony Barr as their biggest impending free agent.

Mike Zimmer: Anthony Barr “unequivocally” won’t be traded...

It’s unclear if the Vikings will give linebacker Anthony Barr a contract extension that keeps him in Minnesota beyond the 2018 season, but coach Mike Zimmer said on Friday that the team won’t be sending him somewhere else before the final year of his current deal is up.

During a Friday media session, Zimmer referred to a report that the team was looking to trade Barr. We were previously unaware of any report or speculation to that effect and Zimmer threw cold water on the notion.

Zimmer said, via Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, that Barr is “unequivocally not being traded.” Zimmer added that the linebacker has missed practice time this week due to a “tweak,” but is expected to practice on Friday.

Barr is set to make $12.3 million this year after the Vikings exercised their option for a fifth year on his contract. The team has extended defensive end Danielle Hunter and wide receiver Stefon Diggs recently, which leaves Barr and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson as notable impending free agents in Minnesota.
