Weddle says what we all thought: https://www.baltimoreravens.com/new...ls-energized-again-after-a-grueling-offseason Some highlights: "Weddle pointed to new Defensive Coordinator Wink Martindale’s new scheme, which has empowered veterans such as himself to make changes based on the offensive formation before the snap. Weddle was also consulted in crafting the scheme and terminology this offseason." “[Martindale is] expanding it and giving the guys confidence to play fast and to do what is best for the defense – not what’s best for the individual,” Weddle said. “I expect to not only have my best year, but as a defense to really control and to manipulate and to make big plays as a defense, even more so than we have in the past.”
Yeah, in the past players have been excited about new players coming on board. Now they are excited about the ability to actually play without restrictions. Also, Weddle wasn't the only one. I think B.William/Suggs and Humphrey said the same thing. The fact that a guy with one year experience can come in and feel that way I'd telling for me. It means, even as a rookie, he could probably tell something wasn't right
What happens when guys make adjustments based on what they think they see but they either misinturpret what they see or they dont see the whole picture?
This sounds much the same way as Rex Ryan's defensive philosophy. He had some great D's, but they often times shit the bed on big plays, mostly against the secondary since that's what happens when, as @gidion72 says, explosive plays occur. That said, we''ll have Jimmy and Marlon patrolling the backfield.
I would rather see an occasional big play being given up over the crappy ass defenses that the Ravens have been putting out over the last 5 years. No play making at all, with the exception of last season, (and most of that was early on). Bend but don't break defenses don't fkin work. Give me an attacking defense any day over that crap that Pees put out year after year. Mattison #2, the Titans will regret having him as their DC when they fail to hold leads in the 4th.
You know, in hindsight, I think Mattison got a bad rep simply for coming after Rex. He only spent two years here as DC, but if I recall correctly, his defenses were #3 overall and #÷ in both points and yards in both his seasons. They collapsed a lot in the 4th quarter, but people also complained about the offense going 3 and out or turning the ball over and causing the defense to be tired. Doesn't seem fair to complain about both things
I remember that he was fired after week 6 in 2009 for the defense having 3 disastrous meltdowns in a row from weeks 4-6. We ended up 9-7 tied for 2nd in the division (Bengal 1st) and one of those losses was to Cincy. Pagano took over as acting DC and the job was his by season's end. Not regretting the move, but the laugh is on his critics. He still earns $750k for being just a college D-line coach for Michigan.
A big reason he was let go was the sack numbers dropped big time those 2 seasons and allowing scoring in critical moments of games. They allowed 16 total touchdowns scored against the team in Qtr's 2 and 4 and usually near halftime or the end of the game. This was the season the Ravens were 3rd in points allowed btw. They were 20th in the league in sacks this season with Trevor Price leading the team with a palty 6.5 total sacks. In 2010, the team gave up 21 total touchdowns in the 2nd and 4th quarters with a staggering 14 in the 4th. They also dropped to 21st in the league against the pass. Suggs led the team by a long way with 11.5 of the team's total 27 sacks. Overall the team finished 3rd in total defense but keep in mind that during this time of the Ravens defensive era, no one ran on the Ravens. The bottom line is Mattison's defense gave up points in crunch time and that got him sent to Michigan. Dean Pees defenses have done the same damn thing. Gave up points at critical times of games and that is a huge reason i compare him to Greg Mattison. They ran similar style of defense, the bend but don't break. Looks pretty with stats but when it matters, it FAILS time and time again. Stats were obtained from this link https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years
Who was fired after week 6 in 2009? Mattison was the DV in 2009 and 2010, and he left of his own accord to go back to college. I used to believe he was nudged out the door, but since then the Ravens have proven they'll keep a coordinator, who may be underperforming in certain areas, for longer than 2 seasons if the coordinator wants to stay
You're right about it being the 2010 season (mea culpa). I recall that Mattison wanted to move back to a primarily 4-3 defense and it failed. I think that is what I was confusing for his "firing" - that Harbs put the kibosh on it. In his last season I just recall that the team curbed his responsibilities setting the stage for Pagano to take over. He was "allowed" to leave for Michigan, but he was under enough fire that the writing was on the wall.
