Toronto Marlies to play for Calder Cup

The Toronto Marlies edged the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 3-1 Friday night to complete a 4-0 series sweep in their AHL Eastern Conference final and advance to the Calder Cup championship series.

 

I can't remember a team west of the Mississippi winning the AHL crown.

The Toronto Marlies knew they weren't going to roll through the playoffs, winning every game, and are welcoming the slice of adversity Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Texas Stars presents.

Texas defenceman Gavin Bayreuther scored the winner to even the best-of-seven Calder Cup finals at 1-1. Toronto won the first game 6-5 on Saturday.

CEDAR PARK, Texas — Marlies blue-liner Calle Rosen is known more for defending the net than trying to find it.

But he came up with a big goal Tuesday night, breaking a tie game in the second period to lead Toronto to a 2-1 victory over the Texas Stars in Game 3 of the Calder Cup final. The win puts the Marlies up 2-1 in the best-of-seven series for the American Hockey League championship.

 

Marlies up, 3-1... I didn't even know they were playing tonight.

 

Marlies are the last of 'em.

 

The Florida Everblades and the Colorado Eagles skate tonight in game 7 for the ECHL Kelly Cup.

The Eagles are the defending champs, but it'll be the last time they strive for the Kelly. Next year they're moving up to the AHL. The Avs will have their top prospects just a bit over 50 miles up the road.

Aren’t the AHL/ECHL playoffs usually done before the Cup is awarded?

 

I'm not sure about the ECHL but the AHL is usually about a week later since the regular season goes on a little later. The first round is a best of 5 though.

 

Go Eagles! I'm very disappointed in myself that I've never seen an Eagles home game. ECHL hockey is very entertaining; so long as you do not expect an NHL style game. (It actually reminds me of 1970's hockey in some ways.)

I'm jacked, however, to catch some A games next year in CO. I only wish there was some EC-WC play so I could watch the storied Rochester Americans. That won't happen unless it's the Calder Cup.
