Except I think we already know what Tyrod Taylor is, right? This isn't the same as bringing in a rookie. We've seen how Tyrod Taylor handles QB duties and processes information against NFL defenses for years.... So if the number one pick of the draft can't beat him out, it's a problem IMO...
If Mayfield can elevate and separate himself like I believe he will, then I can even see a scenario where we deal Taylor away before the trade deadline...That's probably extreme, but I think it's possible. He's a placeholder on a one year contract. A safe QB with starting experience that won't give it away. That's Tyrod, and he could possibly bring a nice return from a guy that likely won't be here next year anyway...It all depends on how comfortable we are with Baker. If he's playing well, and winning some games and getting better each week, ya never know. Taylor could become expendable...
I agree, I do think we know what he is...BUT, right now in the Bills offense, with the Bills personnel, he is about atop 15 QB...mountains better than anything we have had in Cleveland the past two decades. With the Browns CURRENT roster and Todd Haley, could that elevate him into someone nearing the top ten range? If so, I am hard pressed to believe a rookie, even the one rookie I personally have as the best to come out since Andrew Luck, will be able to match that level coming out of his first training camp. I DON'T for a second believe if Mayfield doesn't win the starting position, that he is suddenly a bust and we made the wrong decision. Tyrod was brought in for ONE simple reason...to give this team confidence and to start winning some football games. To give a rookie QB time to acclimate to all aspects of the professional game so that when his number is called he isn't overwhelmed, which will cause a step backwards in his development. I also agree, lol, Mayfield could simply end up being that good that being a rookie doesn't matter. If he becomes a pro in every aspect over the course of 3 months, then I would not want to stand in his way. As I have stated ad nausea on these boards, he's already taken two college programs by storm and wouldn't ALLOW them to hold him back. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the same thing happen at the pro level. I am not calling for a QB controversy, I am simply stating that if Mayfield surpasses Tyrod before the pre-season even begins, then give him a chance to grow faster. That said...IF he gives this organization no other choice but to start him game one...your other scenario could EASILY be put in play. All you need is a contender to have a QB injury and they will come swooping in to offer a 2nd round pick to save their season. It would be the best thing for (3) parties at that point..the Browns turn a 3rd round pick into a 2nd round pick, the trading team gets a seasoned veteran to save their season and Tyrod gets an opportunity to shine in his contract year. In fact, if Baker takes the NFL by storm I would be more shocked if Tyrod ISN'T traded before the deadline, than not.
I love Baker Mayfield more than his own mother. I hope Tyrod Taylor starts at least nine games this season.
HAHA, I didn't even catch that spell correct...No it was NOT intentional, but I'm sure I make many of you nauseous when you see that I have posted. It had an "m" at the end when I typed it.
I hope Mayfield takes the job early, so he and Todd Haley can wreck the league together. And the Cleveland Browns let it be known that they now control the AFCN behind their superstar rookie NFL MVP Baker Mayfield...
I just want to wait until we know what is going on at left tackle. It would really suck to see Baker get the shit beat out of him on his back side because we weren't patient enough to make sure we were good at tackle. I still want Taylor to start for as long as possible and hopefully all this season. I'll take winning 5 games with Tyrod over winning 5 games with Baker just to keep from throwing him to the wolves like we did with Kizer. He's going to end up Rodgers back-up and get another chance to start somewhere after he gets some time to grow in Green Bay.
as long as memory is serving correct, the auto correct makes sense contextually even though the saying is "ad nauseum". Again, if I am correct, it makes it "I am (sick) tired of it" instead of "we are tired of it".
I am with David, above: let Tyrod start so we don't get Baker cooked during his first few games. Likewise, I would also be reluctant to trade Tyrod before mid season, for the same reason. If Baker gets pancaked, I'd prefer Tyrod be there. I would be very happy to see Baker lined up to take us through the final 6 games, after the Bye, as a planned event, allowing Tyrod to showcase his abilities long enough to put a price on his head. If we "franchise" Tyrod to keep him a 2nd year would that allow us to trade him in the off season?
So, let's say you are a team in the mix, and your QB goes down. Where do you shop first? Philly for Nicky Foles, Browns for Taylor, Jets for Bridgewater / McCown, Baltimore for Flacco, Arizona for Bradford? Others? Brissett, McCarron, etc....
Does it REALLY matter? I am sure there are some English 101 message boards (? not really sure) if the off season is so boring that you would like to discuss origins and/or literal meanings. I would say, I am on the court of...if he isn't bringing a 2nd rounder back to us, he isn't worth trading. That said, he will never bring a 2nd round draft pick. My personal opinion, for what I think is realistic in both availability and reliability for a team that is in the mix, yet has a major QB injury. The list, for me, would be: 1) Joe Flacco (has been to and won a Super Bowl), Has started 154 out of a possible 160 games, has 15 playoff games under his belt. Although they have missed the playoffs the past 3 years, every year they have made the playoffs (6 out of 10 years under Flacco) they have one at least one playoff game. Would I want him as our starting QB? No...If we were contending for a playoff spot and lost our starter, would I want him to finish the year..absolutely, compared to what else is likely to be available. However, for OUR situation, if Tyrod ends up getting us into the playoff thought process (say 5-2/4-3), then got hurt around week 7-8, I am confident that Baker Mayfield would take over at that time. 2) Nick Foles, Foles is looking for one more chance to prove he deserves a starting QB gig and big money deal. He has proven he can take over a team at the end of the season and succeed in the playoffs. He has been to a Super Bowl and won. Depending on the severity of the QB injury, he could be a long term option and you would have the inside track after trading for him. Wentz would need to be back to his form pre-injury. Any questions and Foles isn't being traded. 3) Tyrod Taylor, from what is left, he has been the most reliable, period. Everyone else either lacks experience or has a recent history of injuries. The last thing you want to do is trade for a QB to save your season, then also lose him to injury two weeks later. The ONLY way this happens is if a) Baker Mayfield shows that he is so far ahead coming out of training camp that they are forced to make him the starter after the 2nd pre-season game. They will either do it at that point, or not at all. b) If the Browns are winning football games. If they decide to go with Mayfield and are 1-6 nearing the trade deadline, Tyrod isn't going anywhere. 4) Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford, A.J. McCarron, I don't believe any of these players will be available for trade. Due to the fact that I don't think any of their rookie's will be ready to start in the NFL in 2018 and quite frankly, I think Bridgewater may make the Jets re-think their draft choice altogether. If Teddy gets the Jets to respectability, then he may end up getting an extension worthy of making Darnold the trade candidate down the road (I'm talking 2-3 years down the road). My mind is still the same as it was 6 months, 4 months, 2 months ago. This 2018 draft class was Baker Mayfield, then everyone else. There were others that have talent enough to possibly develop into starters, but for me, Mayfield was the only one that I had a great deal of confidence in. Therefore, in my opinion, he is the only one that might give the current teams an opportunity to trade the newly acquired veteran obtained to be a bridge.
Good news, @Lyman! Baker Mayfield won't be starting at QB week 1... ... he'll be starting at wide receiver.
It would be 'Latin 101', and I get your point, but it is still quite intriguing that the accidental misuse of a phrase in a not frequently used/spoken language still fit contextually. The machines ARE taking over. Besides that, cant really tell what kind of heat is on that pass to Baker. Looks like he is at his alma matter.
Actually, according to Merrium-Webster, it is simply an adverb borrowed from the latin and used correctly in my original post, spell check simply dropped the M from the end as it didn't recognize nauseam, only nausea...it doesn't take into account the "ad" portion of the adverb. Definition of ad nauseam adverb ad nau·se·am \ ad-ˈnȯ-zē-əm also -ˌam \ : to a sickening or excessive degree a topic that has been discussed and analyzed ad nauseam And, I really don't know why we are still discussing this.....COME ONE TRAINING CAMP!!!
In Latin the way the word is used in the sentence is all in the ending. There are (at least) 10 different endings to be used depending on the word. It is not a linear language like English (message boards in Latin would be ridiculous with the amount of fragments and poor grammar we use). Regardless of how MW defines "ad nauseam" I was speaking to the direct translation of the mis-spelling/auto-correct and how it actually made contextually. I will concede at this point, no more Latin grammar. But, yes, BRING ON HARD KNOCKS!
