Winning sure is better than losing... either way you still put in the time and work the grind no matter what your doing.

The NFL has suspended 49ers receiver Victor Bolden the first four games of the regular season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Bolden is eligible to return October 1, following the 49ers’ September 30 game against the Chargers. He can participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

Bolden, 23, said he “unknowingly” used a supplement on the NFL’s banned substance list.

“As a professional athlete, I take full responsibility for not verifying the ingredients of the supplement,” Bolden said, via a statement released by the team. “In the future, I will be much better educated when choosing what to put in my body. It hurts to know that I will not be on the field with my team for the first four games of the season.”

Bolden played nine games last season, returning four punts for 23 yards and 19 kickoffs for 396 yards. He played 27 snaps on offense and 122 on special teams.

“Victor made an unintentional mistake, but learned a valuable lesson,” 49ers General Manager John Lynch said. “Professional athletes must be meticulous in their supplement choices. We know Victor is disappointed, but we hope this is a reminder to all our players how important it is to make educated decisions on what to put in their bodies.” (PFT)

The Lions drafted Kerryon Johnson in the second round believing he is a three-down back. That doesn’t mean they want to use the former Auburn star that way.

The Lions signed LeGarrette Blount in free agency, and they return Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah, the team’s leading rushers from last season. But Detroit, which ranked last in rushing last season, trusts that it finally has drafted a running back who can live up to the hype.

“He’s a guy that’s a three-down player,” running backs coach David Walker said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “[At Auburn, he] showed he can play on first, second and third down. He showed he can play in all situations, which was important for us. Very productive in a very good league. So you see the physical qualities, the flexibility in terms of how you can use a guy like that, and then you have a chance to meet him and see how smart and driven he is. He’s kind of the type of player that fits with our program because he’s smart, he showed he’s productive and then he has flexibility in terms of first, second, third downs.”

Johnson led the SEC in rushing last season with 1,391 yards, playing in an offense that passed less than 40 percent of the time. He joins an offense that threw 58 percent of the time last year, according to Birkett.

Lions General Manager Bob Quinn expects to use Johnson “more to run outside” than inside like Johnson did at Auburn.

“I’ve grew up in the southeast, know a bunch of people from the southeast and I’ve watched a lot of SEC football over the years,” offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said. “It sure was fun to watch him compete on those Saturdays when we’re maybe making a road trip or at the hotel doing whatever we do. Came to respect him as a competitor and we’re going to throw him in here and see if he can get better, see how he does.” (PFT)

Donald Penn angrily called Jon Gruden after Raiders drafted Kolton Miller

The Raiders took their left tackle of the future, Kolton Miller, with the 15th overall pick in this year’s draft. Their left tackle of the present wasn’t pleased.

Donald Penn, the 35-year-old who has manned the left tackle spot in Oakland the last four years, called coach Jon Gruden and demanded to know why they would use their first-round pick on a player whose likely role will be to replace Penn some day.

“I’m not going to lie, as soon as I saw the draft pick, I called Gruden immediately. Like ‘man, what the f–k?’,” Penn said on Michael Rapoport’s podcast. “He didn’t answer, but when I saw him the next Monday, he was joking with me saying, ‘You were ready to kick my ass, huh, Donald?! You were mad as a motherf–ker!’”

The Raiders would then draft another offensive tackle, Brandon Parker, in the third round. So it’s clear that they want to get younger at the position. But Gruden appears to have placated Penn by persuading him that the Raiders’ draft picks were about keeping a good offensive line in front of Derek Carr for many years to come, not about any sign that they’re losing confidence in Penn this year. Penn now says he’s working on taking the young tackles under his wing and hoping that some day, they’ll protect Carr as well as he does. Just not quite yet. (PFT)

Delanie Walker declares himself the best tight end in the NFL

Titans tight end Delanie Walker has a high opinion of himself.

Walker believes that he — not Rob Gronkowski or Travis Kelce — is the best tight end in football.

“Honestly, I feel like I’m the best tight end in the league in all phases,” Walker said, via the Tennessean. “Blocking, run blocking, catching the ball, breaking tackles, stuff like that. At the end of the day, if you don’t feel like that you shouldn’t be in the league.”

Walker said he’s been focused this offseason on his conditioning and believes he’s primed for a big season at age 34.

“Every year I try something new,” Walker said. “I don’t eat pork, I don’t drink alcohol. That’s been helping me, keeping me fit and in shape. Just go out here and I try to bust my butt every day in the weight room, on the field, and it’s tended to work so I’m going to stick to that regimen.”

He’ll need to have a big season, to match his big talk. (PFT)

Packers linebacker Clay Matthews is probably wishing he had worn his helmet at a charity softball game today.

Matthews confirmed that he suffered a broken nose when he took a line drive to the face.

“Thank you for all the concern and well-wishes,” Matthews wrote on Twitter. “I busted my nose pretty good and will have surgery once the swelling subsides. Thankful as it could have been much more serious.”

Matthews was pitching in the charity softball game, which also included other Packers players, when a batted ball drilled him directly in the face, knocking him down. He got up and ran off the field, covering his face, and was taken to the emergency room. (PFT)

NFL offers some clarity on new helmet rule

Months after the NFL adopted a significant new rule about how players can use their helmets, the league is providing some clarity.

The NFL published a video today showing examples of specific plays that would be penalties under the new rule.

The league’s basic explanation of the rule is, “It is a foul if a player lowers his head to initiate and make contact with his helmet against an opponent.”

Most significantly, the league says players will be ejected if a hit meets the following standards: The player lowers his helmet to establish a linear body posture prior to initiating and making contact with the helmet, the player delivering the blow had an unobstructed path to his opponent and the contact was clearly avoidable because the player delivering the blow had other options.

There’s still some room for interpretation here — two different officials might look at the same hit and have different ideas about whether “the player delivering the blow had other options” — but there’s at least some more clarity now than there was previously. (PFT)

Most likely has something to do with the jersey Matthews wears.

I wanna know who’s screamer did he block with his face?
