MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (AP) — There's still so much more for Kirk Cousins to learn about his new coaches, teammates and playbook in Minnesota, a mere 2½ months after the newest Vikings quarterback signed his record-setting contract to headline this year's NFL free agency frenzy.

With every full-swing fist pump after a completed pass in these non-contact practices, there's no question that the Vikings acquired a Pro Bowl-level enthusiasm along with Cousins and his skillset.

"I think as a seventh-year player, now you have a little freedom to just be yourself and to not take a back seat and to just be vocal within reason," Cousins said.

"Be a leader, step up, and let your voice be heard. To their credit, the guys have received it well, and it's been fun to just assimilate myself into the offense and into the program."

As Cousins was finishing an interview session with the Minnesota media on Wednesday afternoon during a visit to a local middle school, his teammates called him over to complete their interaction with the kids and pose for one last photo.

He dutifully sprinted across the gym so as not to disappoint or, perhaps, take the razzing. He's the face of this franchise, a responsibility he hasn't shied from, but he's also a carefully spoken and image-conscious player who can understand the importance of not overstepping his bounds.

"Anytime you're new to an organization, you feel your way around a little bit. He's doing that some, but he's leading. He's taking charge," coach Mike Zimmer said amid the pre-teen cacophony in the gym at Friendly Hills Middle School just across the freeway from the team's new headquarters. "He has a lot on his plate right now."

True to his nature as a relationship builder and a meticulous preparer, Cousins hosted wide receivers Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs at his Atlanta-area offseason home shortly after he joined the team.

"We did get some stuff on the field, learning what he likes, learning how he likes certain routes run, because every quarterback is a little different," Thielen said.

"But I think the biggest thing was just learning his personality, how fun he is to be around and his humor and things like that. It was really good to get a jump on that."

Cousins has also, like it or not, dived right into the extraordinary expectations surrounding the Vikings following their advancement to the NFC championship game last season. The junior-high kids were yet another reminder of this.

"Most of the questions revolved around, 'Will we go to the Super Bowl?' and 'Will we make the playoffs?' I just throw it back at them saying, 'Do you think we will?' and they say, 'Yes'. They're confident, and that's a good place to start."

As the Vikings worked through their fifth of nine formal spring practices labeled by NFL parlance as organized team activities, outside linebacker Anthony Barr was back on the field with the team after an absence last week he confirmed was related to his contract status.

Now playing the final season of his rookie contract at a fully guaranteed salary of slightly more than $12.3 million, Barr said he hoped to have a new deal in place before the on-field workouts began. That didn't happen, so he took out an insurance policy to protect his future earnings in case of injury in 2018.

The issue for Barr and his desire for longer-term security is the Vikings also have hefty paydays looming for wide receiver Stefon Diggs and defensive end Danielle Hunter, who are also playing this season on expiring contracts for a team that has plenty of expensive stars.

"My agent is doing a great job, and they're having conversations," said Barr, who was the team's first-round draft pick in 2014. "I don't know too many details on that. My focus is here with the team and getting better."

Sounds a little like the quarterback, dealing with his challenge of taking over a championship-chasing team.

"Everything is new, so I'm just continuing to try to get to where the plays and the reads and the terminology are all instinctual without having to think," Cousins said. "That takes a long time, but every day you can take a step in that process."

I heard Teddy is doing well and impressing players and coaches in practice... good for him.

Treadwell has not ever been impressive and I believe your right, its do or die time for him.

Whats really cool is how well the Vikings receivers are digging Cousins ball... this is going to be fun. Ive seen some articles and heard some scuttlebutt that Captain Kirk is going to put up big numbers with this Vikings offense. Imagine that, a top ranked offense to go with a top ranked defense... I like it. Lets just start the season now!

Like the Captain Kirk kinda cool,to have the offense and denfese clicking at the same time would be sweet cause it's been heavy on denfese or offense....a balanced run game passing game decent qb play and outstanding play by the denfese its something the Vikings fans have not seen in years

Vikings defensive end Brian Robison took some time before agreeing to a pay cut to return for a 12th season. He said “more than likely” this is his final season.

“I’ve talked to my wife and family about it, and the body’s just getting to that point,” Robison told Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. “I’m not going to make that decision wholeheartedly until probably the season starts, but I would say more than likely it probably will be [his final season]. . . . If you ask me that in August, I’ll have a definite answer.”

Robison, 35, missed four weeks of offseason work contemplating his future. He said he was “50-50” whether to retire or return last month.

He finally agreed to cut his salary from $3.5 million to $1.015 million with a $90,000 workout bonus and reported to voluntary workouts May 14.

“I’ve been around this business long enough to have kind of learned the business because I wanted to, and I kind of knew [a pay cut] was coming,” Robison said. “I didn’t think it’d be that much, but I definitely saw it coming. . . . Me and [General Manager] Rick Spielman actually had a conversation about it, and I think for me it was just making the right decision for me and my family.”

Danielle Hunter took over as the starter at left defensive end last season, but Robison still played 56.5 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. He made 20 tackles and four sacks.

Have you read Tricky Ricky saying having a high priced roster is a good thing to have, can you explain to me what he meant by that he must have access to an endless supply of money

In my opinion, he Is simply stating that chances are if you have a high priced roster, you probably own a lot of the best players in a certain position, at least a top 10 or something. Not too many NFL GM's are shelling out money for mediocracy these days. If your skilled, your probably getting paid accordingly.

Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs is heading into the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, but he’s not sweating it.

Diggs said this morning on PFT Live that if his agents and the Vikings work out an extension, that’s fine, but it’s not his focus.

“This is a business and there’s a lot going on,” Diggs said. “Being a small portion of it I’m definitely sitting back just working every day and letting that stuff handle itself. I have people who will handle that. For me, it’s just coming in and working every day. It’s not about any contract or anything like that, I’m trying to win. That’s all I’m concerned about.”

Diggs said he’ll only take two days off after the Vikings’ minicamp before jumping back into his own training regimen before the Vikings’ training camp opens on July 27. He’s focused on getting better, and his contract will come whenever it comes. (PFT)

Vikings' Terence Newman works at safety during camp

Terence Newman has accomplished a lot in the defensive secondary during his career since entering the league out of Kansas State as the fifth overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft.

The Minnesota Vikings veteran cornerback now appears ready to absorb another responsibility, but this time on the back end of coverage.

Newman took repetitions at safety during the team's minicamp and his performance impressed defensive coordinator George Edwards.

"Terence has done a good a job," Edwards said Wednesday, via the Vikings' official website. "That's a hat that he can wear, and we're glad we've got him."

Newman briefly played safety in 2015, and Wednesday's move came after he swapped jersey numbers with safety Andrew Sendejo, who is sidelined with an undisclosed injury.

But being an established veteran in addition to his flexibility to play various positions in the secondary has helped Newman as one of the team's elder statesman.

"That way, you've got to have that versatility in that room, that if somebody gets injured or something like that, the next guy's gotta be up," Edwards said, via the team's website. "And he's [a great example], especially for the young guys -- 'Hey, the more that you can do, the longer you're going to be able to stick around and help us win football games.'"

Newman, who turns 40 in September, continues to prove throughout his accomplished career the more a player can do, the more his value rises.

Whether he is playing his natural position or helping out at safety, Newman's importance to the Vikings defense and willingness to help out when called upon can't be overlooked. (NFL.com)
